New Color Trend To Try For Fall: Deep Ruby

**This post is sponsored by Nordstrom.

I’m seeing all versions of red, ruby, and plum in the stores this fall and decided it would be fun to step out of my neutral zone. I love that the reds are plentiful in warm and cool tones to flatter every complexion. True red isn’t that flattering on me, so I jumped on this deep ruby, which is. There’s lots of purple in this red, which will go with so many other colors.

With the holidays right around the corner, I thought this cardigan with sparkly buttons would be fun to try. You can wear it now with jeans and sporty sneakers and then wear it with a satin skirt to attend the Nutcracker later in the season. I’m always pleased to find V-neck cardigans because they work so well with blouses and button-ups. I also think they look better unbuttoned than crew neck cardigans because they don’t droop at the neckline.

This cardigan is in a machine-washable ribbed yarn that’s super soft to the touch. Many ladies can’t wear wool, so I always have my eye out for alternatives. It’s also available in black in sizes 00-22. The plus size in black is here.

I paired it with this vibrant dark floral blouse that has shades of deep ruby, black, red, ivory, and tan, which will coordinate with everything! It has dramatic full sleeves with a three-button cuff in a machine-washable fabric that would dress up or down. This would be fun with a pair of jeans and some booties or a pencil skirt for dressier occasions.

I’m thrilled it’s the season to bring out my Birdies Starling flats because they’re super comfy. Their velvet finish dresses up easily and works perfectly all through the holidays. I also dress mine down with jeans because they go with everything. They have a non-slip sole, a memory foam footbed, and never pinch my bunion. Nordstrom carries them in tons of colors and patterns, so if black is not your neutral, they have lots of options.

Liverpool Los Angeles is a brand I’ve come to rely on for quality basics in modern classic shapes. These knit trousers could not be more comfortable. They have a polished look with slim legs, front slash, and back welt pockets. The fabric is a substantial stretch ponte fabric that has 9% elastane so that it will keep its shape.

These pants come in seven colors, in regular sizes 0-16 and petite sizes 0P-16P. They have a 10″ rise and can either be dry-cleaned or machine-washed, which is pretty convenient. The plus size option is here.

I needed a deeper lipstick to go with this new deep ruby sweater, so I decided to try my Charlotte Tilbury lip pencil in Crazy In Love. I simply lined and filled in my lips with the pencil, then topped it with a quick slick of my Chantecaille Lip Chic in Bourbon Rose. Voilà, a new, deeper lip color.

MORE DEEP RUBY TO TRY

Nordstrom is my favorite department store for so many reasons, not the least of which is their great selection and incredible customer service with free shipping and returns. I recommend you sign up for the Nordy Club here. It’s free to join, and you earn points towards notes you can use on future purchases. They also offer BOPUS, ROTUS (reserve online, try on in-store), and curbside pickup, plus you get free basic alterations.

You look beutiful in this color! Love it.

  2. I love red but loathe purple. Those plumish winey shades won’t work for me, I hesitate to call the shades “ruby.”

  3. I’m loving this color on you Jennifer and like yourself I cannot wear a true red. (Do have something similar in a lightweight turtle neck maybe a shade darker, that when shopping for it actually found it in a thrift store as wasn’t on trend at that time. Pair it mostly with a black ‘n gold Hounds Tooth blazer and faux black leather, hybrid slim cut pants.) As to a new color for my Autumn/Winter wardrobe; I’ve added what might be best described as a cobalt blue in actually a crew-neck cardigan sweater (plain weave/resembles cashmere but isn’t … ☺) that is cropped but also plan to wear it as a v-neck (by buttoning/adjusting/turning under) since am finding these days the style of the latter in ‘pullovers’ (that I often wear) are either so low (in cut) or wide (more like a boat neck). -Brenda-
Footnote: Cobalt blue can have a subtle red undertone but is neither warm of cool.

    1. That’s a great idea, turning back the crew to make a V!

  4. I love my Birdies! They are one of the few brands to make a 10 1/2 size. They are very comfortable, but not supportive enough for me to wear all day wear. Great for special occasions and dressy enough for evening meetings.
My question, if I put something in my Nordstrom cart but don’t buy it right away, do you still get the credit? I hope so!❤️

    1. Have you tried ading a supportive insole? I can get credit is you purchase it within 7 days, and haven’t clicked back to Nordstrom thru an ad or other link on the internet, I do get credit. Thanks for asking.

  5. Hi Jennifer, I absolutely love the cardigan and blouse combination. I see you ordered the size small in the cardigan. We are about the same size, and height, but I have more of a stomach. Was the small adequate with wearing something underneath? I don’t want a slouchy look, but like something more fitted. I am thinking of ordering both the black and plum colors. Unfortunately they closed the Nordstroms in town so everything is ordered by mail. Thanks for the daily posts. I love your style.

also what shoes do you wear with a wide led jean? Trying to shop out of my closet.

    1. I like a shoe, bootie or loafer with a bit more bulk to add balance for a ewide leg pant. Lug soles, small platforms are perfect. I have large shoulders so you may find the small works fine

You look terrific in those colors! I, on the other hand, cannot wear any shade of red, burgundy, plum or purple- I don’t think they look good on me nor do I feel myself when I wear them. I do, however, love my red finger and toe nail polish and lipstick, and the occasional red shoe. About all the red I can handle. To thy self be true!

Jennifer, I love jewel tones but am really particular about the exact shade of purple. I have a v-neck sweater in the perfect tone that I bought a few years ago, but am always on the hunt for another. On another note, I finally went to Athleta yesterday and tried on the Endless pants. They are fantastic. I bought one pair in black, but since I live in south Florida the Brooklyn pant fabric is even better for a warmer climate. I ended up buying 3 pairs.

    1. I’m glad you life them

  8. Beautiful colors and outfit on you!

    1. Hi Jennifer, I love the cardigan on you – my favorite color! I’m 5’7”, small shoulders. I’m on the fence whether to order small or medium. I like more of a classic, somewhat fitted look. Suggestion on size for me? Thank you 🙂

      1. I’m not sure but since shipping is free both ways, I’d order both sizes and return the one that doesn’t fit the way you like.

  9. Janice in Ky says:

This sweater and blouse combo is very flattering on you, hope you keep it. Like you I do wear red , mostly around the holidays and 4th of July. But being a cool winter who loves pink in any shade the plum color this season is wonderful. I purchased the girlfriend cardigan and a jewel colored blouse you featured a few weeks back from Talbots. I’ve received compliments every time I’ve worn them. With my gray hair now, I don’t do traditional fall colors. I would ordered that blouse if it came in petite’s. On my 5’ frame with short arms it would overwhelm me. 😣

    1. The sleeves would stay put at your wrist but I agree, likley be too voluminous!

  10. Hi Jennifer, Ruby is fabulous on you! I’m also not a “red” person so I opted for burgundy this fall. Much more flattering on me than true red. It makes for a nice richer color for my grey, navy, beige and ivory neutral wardrobe.

    1. I really like it with my silvering hair too

  11. Boy, I’m with you on all things ruby, burgundy, plum and fuchsia! Love those colors with my fair and cool skin. I also prefer the V-neck cardigans for layering. Don’t like the crew neck ones because they only look decent when buttoned up the whole way. Nice post, thanks for the options!

  12. Nordstrom is my favorite department store also. I really like the ruby red cardigan. I’ve been seeing camel and brown colors out there. I’m not sure if those colors look good with silver hair but I loved them when my hair was dark.

  13. Wow Jennifer, that cardigan is beautiful! I need it!

I so missed you yesterday but you more than deserve a Wednesday off.

    Have a blessed day!

  14. Linda Shearer says:

Love the color and love that shirt. I have a pair of those Liverpool pants. Very comfortable.

  15. I love that color on you!!

  16. As a dark winter you’re right in my wheel house, but the sweater color is one summers and winters can both wear! Many more people can wear that vs true red. My advice in general as a life long red lover is when you find your shade of red, snap it up because it will be years until to comes around again! Also thanks for the Birdies review. I have eyed them for a long time. My feet are getting fussier (actually with “tailorsl’s” bunions below my pinky toes) so very happy to see wide widths.

  17. In the post with the deep ruby sweater your wearing from Nordstroms you have on a black leather belt with stitching and gold buckle. Where do get nice (reasonably priced) leather belts . So many I see are cheap looking,

    1. Nordstrom brands make some lovely belts. Mine is from Madewell, at Nordstrom last year. Talbots and Ann Tayor also make nbice belts.

  18. Pat Patterson says:

Good morning Jennifer, I absolutely adore this plum color. It does so much for our face, bringing a pretty glow. I’ve already ordered it to pick up at my local Nordstrom.
