Monday Musings From Portugal

Happy Monday, ladies. I hope to create a packing/travel capsule wardrobe list to share with you from my trip to Portugal. However…it occurs to me that if I can just remember to get Mr. AWSL to take my photo each day, I will have captured one. We shall see. We’ve had an amazing time here on São Miguel Island, and today, we’re flying back through Lisbon to the south of Portugal.

ENDLESS PANTS / TANK TOP / KNIT SHIRT / SANDALS / PACKABLE FEDORA / SIMILAR TOTE BAG

I wanted to share how these Endless pants look after I washed them with hand soap in the bathroom sink and hung them to dry over the bathtub. I do that sort of thing a lot when we travel because it enables me to use a carry-on only.

ENDLESS PANTS

Like brand new! A reader asked about the crease down the front, and as you can see, it survived two days of flying, sink washing, hand wringing, and hanging dry over the tub. It’s been muggy and warm on the island, and I have never felt overheated in these pants. I want my entire wardrobe in this fabric!

French-inspired fashion seems to be more popular than ever, and it’s a look I really enjoy. Here’s a splurge or save outfit with similar items.

This outfit is comprised of classics that many of you already have in your wardrobe. Loafers, a bucket bag, gold-toned jewelry, and some neutral chinos. The look is styled with a neutral top or a touch of burgundy if you prefer more color.

Which outfit do you prefer?

The splurge comes in at around $3,013. The save is closer to $250. Is the difference that obvious to you?

I’m creating some reels for this trip, and I wonder how many of you are on Instagram to see them.

I watched Blue Zones on Netflix before we left and really enjoyed it. I’d read the book a few years ago, but watching it made me want to visit those places. What are your favorite shows/movies to watch?

  1. I liked the sweater and top on the splurge, but the white is gonna have to be on sale because I tend to stain white. I loved the 13.99 earrings and I think I’ll order 4 pair-one for each of my girls and 1 for me. I would have ordered the Gap pants, but one review said that by the end of the day, they were rump-sprung. The splurge pants had 47 reviews, but when I clicked on reviews, nothing happened, so I didn’t order. I ordered the shoes. I am on Instagram.

  2. I’m on Instagram would and love to see your reels. Looking forward to your packing list, as well.
Only travel with carry on and always enjoy new ideas for travelling light.
    Thanks for your great posts!

  3. I do love the mock neck sweater in the splurge outfit but cannot afford that price. However I do love the JJill knit shirt and everything JJIll. I adore the Lifestride loafers! Might have to check them out, hopefully they are wide enough for my wide feet!! Enjoy your trip. I am not on Instagram to see your reels.

  4. For me, the thing that sealed the deal and caused me to identify the budget outfit vs the splurge outfit was the shoes.
I am rarely the one to be willing to pay more, but the white sweater in the high end outfit just might prompt me to pay a little more. It could be used to elevate the budget outfit. Add some slightly more upscale loafers and I could be all in.

    1. Shoes are so important to me.

Hi Jennifer. Love those endless pants. Since I am about your size, I was wondering what size you buy in this pant? This would be very usual information for me to have. Thanks

    1. I wear a six in these

  6. Fantastic pant to learn about particularly for travelling. I’ve never shopped at Athletica so glad to have a new store to try

  7. What an exciting trip. Can’t wait to see and hear more. Regarding the Endless Pants, I will be taking a European Cruise late November early December 2024. Are the pants warm enough to wear?, maybe just aboard ship? Wasn’t sure if not good for cool temps.
    Enjoy your time in Portugal.

    1. They’re a great weight. They breathe but could be warm.

  8. Please please do a post about your trip to Portugal! We are going next year for a month, lots of golfing but with some sightseeing, too. ( I’m not on instagram) Love all your clothing suggestions.

  9. I really like Instagram because you can just scroll through so much faster. I like both outfits today but I agree it’s about the splurge handbag so I would definitely go with the save. Have a wonderful trip!

  10. I love the knit shirt from JJill, bought it in the aqua but I’m dismayed by a couple reviews about it shrinking. I’m going to wait to wear it till more reviews are posted with good results washing it in cold water. It’s that or dry cleaning I guess.
Beautiful photos! Enjoy your time away

    1. Sounds like you are having a ball. Can’t wait to hear more. 😊

  11. Following your recommendation I purchased a pair of Endless trousers from Athleta. Wow! I love them so much that I bought three! The fit is great, zipper pockets very handy and they will even work as golf attire for cooler days.

  12. Jennifer, I really like the look and ease of your travel outfit. Also love that you wash your clothes when you travel … just like a normal person. I’d never buy the Slurge bag, but you can see the quality in the pix. Have a great time.

    1. lol, I’m pretty normal. I always rinse my clothes out when we travel! It saves room in the bag and money!

  13. The cost of the Splurge is all about the bucket bag, and $1990 is more than it’s worth to me. I like both the looks today but would definitely go Save.

  14. My secret weapons for wash and go travel wear are:
    1. An inflatable hanger. It holds the sides of your garment apart so it can dry faster.
    2. Clothespins that hang by a hook.
    Thanks for great dressing ideas!

  15. I will definitely be going to Athleta for the endless pants and JJill for the knit shirt. Finding things that don’t wrinkle Is wonderful.
    Thank you..

Not on Instagram. Had to draw a line somewhere in the amount of time I spend on social media. As usual, the accessories made it easy to separate splurge from save. Which makes the moral of the story – invest in nice accessories. They will elevate more value oriented clothing for years. Your exact size and its variations don’t matter much. With reasonable care they will last for years.

I wore my Endless Pant all through France for 1 month. Very good for travel! I am a former 500(k) mi international traveler and wish we had these slacks back in the day! Enjoy your trip!

    1. They’re amazing Virginia. I won’t travel without them again. No matter where I’m going. My husband is a 2 million+ mile flyer with United:) It’s exhausting.

  18. Pat Patterson says:

Good morning Jennifer, everyone in my area are talking about fabulous Portugal is for a vacation.
The splurge outfit is on the right (Penny loafers) were the clue!
Continue to have a great vacation.

  19. Yes to reels! Excited to see your adventures! I could pick out the Splurge but WOW! the price difference with this Splurge or Save feature this post is kinda mind blowing! I am finally convinced to head to Athleta and purchase the pants!

  20. Hi Jennifer! Well I happen to just love the splurge outfit- for me, it’s about touring/traveling perfection ( other than the price tag). So glad you’re enjoying Portugal!
