J.Jill Early Fall 2024 Try-On
I got caught in a downpour before heading in to try these clothes on, so my hair is particularly rough. This J. Jill early fall 2024 try-on seems to be happening at the perfect time because fall is in the air here in the PNW. The lighting is strange and unattractive in these photos because there was a super bright light directly overhead, which casts everything into shadow.
A try-on is when I go into a store and style their latest collection so readers can see what’s new and get some ideas for how they could wear it. I’m not shopping for myself and seldom buy clothes because I prefer to shop online. My hair gets pretty trashed, and I’m often barefoot. For size reference, I’m 5’4″, which puts me on the cusp of petite. I have wide shoulders and straight hips with no obvious curves. J. Jill carries sizes reg, petite, and some talls in sizes XS-4X. I usually reach for petite first but do shop in all sections for the best fit.
This open-weave cardi caught my eye the moment I walked in the door. It’s a soft, cool-based beige that is very reminiscent of the Eileen Fisher colors I found here. It’s a cotton blend that goes beautifully into fall. I’m wearing a petite medium, and the sleeves are plenty long, but the sweater feels a bit too large, so I recommend you size down. It also comes in black.
I’m wearing it over this soft popover shirt in the stone color. This shirt also comes in nutmeg or olive and has a front half placket and two front flap pockets. It’s a nice, drapey, soft rayon, which makes it easy to layer under things. These wide-leg jeans are cotton, poly, and Tencel blend with 2% spandex, so they’re very soft and stretchy. They’re fitted through the hips and flare gently to a modern wide-leg. This petite has an inseam of 28.5″, and the reg is 31″.
Vest season, here we come. J Jill always carries great vests, and this “Gillet” is no exception. It comes in navy, teal, and this pesto color. The vest just hangs open with no closure or pockets in a cotton blend fabric that will work beautifully into fall.
This classic white shirt is my favorite type because it has 5% spandex, which makes it super comfy. It’s a soft/crisp fabric that is pliable and layers under things beautifully. I’m wearing a small but ended up ordering a large for an oversized look. These straight-leg jeans have a nice high-rise and flattering slim fit. The fabric is a soft, stretchy blend of cotton, Tencel, poly, and spandex. Ankle-length jeans are really coming into their own this fall, which is a nice change for those who have been sitting out the crop trend.
This wearever outfit just screams comfy travel attire to me. The pants are a pull-on style in smooth viscose with 13% spandex, so they’ll maintain their shape. They have a wider elastic waistband, which lays flat and feels comfy. They come in charcoal, navy, and black. The layering tank has a slight A-line shape, so it doesn’t cling to your torso. It comes in black, cream, and two small, neutral floral prints.
This textured cardigan is also part of the wearever collection. It comes in black or this barley and black stripe, which, interestingly, matches the cream perfectly. I understand that brands like to use creative names for their colors, but consistency would be very helpful for online shoppers. This cardi is mid-hip length, which can be tricky because it adds visual width where it ends against your leg.
I loved the entire concept of this double-knit blazer…until I put it on. Do you see the white dots in the center of the black circles I drew in this photo? They’re divots made in the fabric from the way they attached the inside pockets. The sales gal was wearing this jacket and said she simply snipped the threads that were pulling. The problem is that it allows the lining of the pocket to show below the jacket. So, although I love the concept of this jacket, the construction leaves a lot to be desired, and I can’t recommend it.
The denim shirt is a classic that’s well-designed and lightly faded with no distressing. The demi boot jeans are a light barley color, and they also come in mid-wash blue. I chose the petite with a 25″ inseam so they would come to the ankle, while the regular has a 27″ inseam.
Here is the same double-knit jacket but in a green herringbone weave, and the divots don’t show. The pattern and weave seem to obscure the marks, plus the fabric feels a tiny bit more substantial. This small in regular is a tiny bit longer than the petite, and I prefer it.
I’m styling it over the white stretch shirt and these stretch twill pants in a flax heather color. These fit beautifully and have a seam running down the front, which slims the look of the leg. They’re a polyester/rayon/spandex woven fabric that feels substantial. I prefer weaves over knits in pants because they give a bit more structure. These also come in moss heather or black.
By this point, you see that I find this versatile white shirt a valuable piece for fall. I topped it here with this side button knit vest. This comes in 3 colors with an exaggerated V-neck and oversized feel. These boyfriend jeans can be rolled or unrolled to the length you prefer. I love their relaxed vibe and medium blue rinse. I have to say that J. Jill excels at fiber content with the jeans, which makes them really comfortable. This pair is cotton/rayon/polyester/spandex which gives when you move and feels soft to the touch. This style also comes in a pale green color.
PURE JILL SOFT WIDE LEG JEANS size S
This diamond quilted jacket would be a great piece for a woman with curves. My body is straight and boxy, so this shape isn’t my most flattering. It’s a soft fabric that’s perfect to span the seasons, and really cute. I love the set-in sleeves, and the Chanel vibes it gives in this very casual fabric. It also comes in a soft ivory color.
I’m wearing it over this navy Pima cotton tank that would be a workhorse in your wardrobe. This comes in 3 colors plus a stripe with 5% spandex, which makes it really comfy. These wide-leg jeans are simply dreamy. I have last year’s version and wear them all the time. The fabric is incredibly soft with a pull-on waistband and 5 pocket styling. They feel as comfy as a pair of leggings yet look like jeans.
Here’s the “gillet” in a small navy. I actually prefer the additional length because it moves the proportions further from 50/50. (You may also enjoy reading- The Rule of Thirds For Your Outfits.) I paired it with this cotton tunic shirt in pesto and white stripe. It’s a classic poplin with a partial button placket that simply pulls over your head. It’s also available in white. I’m wearing it with these straight-leg jeans because they’re sort of perfect 🙂

That vest is such a great fall piece.
JJ Jill has lovely clothes but the sizing doesn’t work for me. I would be a size 10P in those pull on jeans except my waist is 5” too big for the hip size. It would be nice if these companies would also put on the size charts the easement that is put into all garments. Sometimes I can get away with a 12P. Like at Chicos. Their jeans and pants fit me in the waist even if the chart would say no. The only fitted straight leg jeans I can wear are Liz Claiborne jeans from JCP. Again, the size is 12P. I’m 79 years old, am 5’ 1 1/2” tall and weigh 140 lbs. for reference.

I agree, especially when jeans are sold by waist size. If I buy according to waist, they are WAY too big in the hip. I would like to know ease. Sometimes I buy pants by size, and the waist is too big. it is hard when I am 35 miles to the closest JJill, Talbots and Chicos. I buy online and take my chances. Chicos so slimming girlfriend denim fits me perfect. It might be because the waistband had some stretch. I tend to have problems with JJill fit. It runs big and I size down, and then suddenly that formula won’t work for a skirt, in particular.
I recently discovered J Jill carried talls. Usually a little to expensive for me so have to wait for sales

I love the way you mixed the denim shirt with the caramel colored jacket. The jacket color is one that would look horrible on me by itself but putting the blue next to your face would cure that. Love your tips and the hard work of trying on all of those clothes so we don’t have to. Thanks!

Thanks for the try-on. I’m not a fan of all the oversize shirts, tunics and gilets as I prefer a more classic, tucked-in look. I’ve worn JJ jeans for years, though, and find them to wear well. Sizing can be hit or miss: I wear Petite XS, but they are sometimes still too big.
I am a fan of J. Jill because they carry petite sizes. My only problem is that the clothes tend to run large. I can only buy SP and can’t wear any of the tunics (I’m 5’0″). However, I like their styles for mature women. It is a challenge finding good quality petite clothes!

We are the same age and almost the same height (I am 5’2 1/2″) so when you talk about sizes we are in the same place. I have shopped at all of the places above but having moved to the midwest, Chico’s is here but not the other 2 in my town (let-alone Nordstrom’s!) I have some “retro” jackets with fringe and cannot believe that they are back in style. Having to buy new clothes because of huge weight loss and taking my time.
Congrats on your weight loss! You may like completely different shapes now.
