Best Foundation for Women Over 60
At this stage of life, I want makeup that works with my skin, not against it. Our skin naturally changes as we move through our 60s, and the foundation that once worked wonders may no longer cut it. I’m not trying to look younger; I want to look like the best version of myself…fresh, radiant, and well-rested. For me, that means choosing lightweight coverage that lets my skin breathe, non-cakey formulas that don’t settle into fine lines, and natural-looking foundation that enhances what’s already there. In today’s post, I’m sharing the best foundations for women over 60 along with the foundation tips I’ve learned along the way, because the right formula really can make all the difference.

Top Foundations for Mature Skin

I discovered this Super Serum Skin Tint a few years ago and love it! It also comes in 30 colors, so I was able to find one that’s cool-toned and pale enough for me. I prefer to wear foundation or tinted serum, just slightly lighter than my skin tone, to brighten things up.
It provides light coverage to even out your skin tone while also offering an SPF 40. It’s made from a nourishing blend of skin-loving ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, squalane, and niacinamide, that feels more like a treatment than a tint.

I wore this full coverage foundation from Oxygenetix for years in the shade “Opal.” Over the last year or two, I’ve found myself choosing the ILIA skin tint instead because it’s lighter and leaves a dewier look.

This isn’t quite a foundation and not quite a concealer, but it works beautifully as both. I reach for it when I want a quick, polished look without layering on a full face of makeup. The texture is creamy and light, and it blends seamlessly into the skin with just fingers or a brush.
What I appreciate most is that it doesn’t settle into lines or highlight dryness, which is something I’m always watching for. It provides light to medium coverage without being too drying or heavy. Rather than cover your whole face, you apply to spots and marks you’d like to camouflage, then blend it in.

This foundation from Tower 28 is fragrance-free, silicone-free, and specifically made for sensitive or reactive skin. It gives light coverage and helps even out redness while letting your skin breathe. The mineral-based SPF 30 is another plus, especially for everyday wear.

I’ve been a fan of Tower 28 for a while, and their SOS Spray has been a staple in my skincare routine since the days of mask-wearing. This Hypochlorous Acid spray might sound intense, but it’s actually incredibly gentle while packing serious antimicrobial benefits. It helps calm redness, fight bacteria, and even supports skin healing, which makes it a great addition to any routine, especially if you deal with sensitivity or breakouts.

This tinted serum is another great light coverage option. It has hyaluronic acid for hydration, coQ10 for antioxidant support, and olive squalane to help soften the skin. The texture is silky and sheer…more like a veil of moisture with a hint of tint.

Gucci Westman is a world-renowned make-up artist who created a new standard of clean beauty with skin-loving, performance-first makeup that looks effortless. Their foundation stick is one of the easiest foundations to apply, and it gives a gorgeous natural finish. It melts into the skin and never feels heavy. It’s especially great for travel or touch-ups. The formula is fragrance-free and full of skin-loving ingredients, like camellia oil and coconut oil derivatives.
Frequently Asked Questions About Foundations
What foundation is best for women over 60?
Look for lightweight, hydrating formulas with a natural or radiant finish. Foundations that are too matte or full-coverage can emphasize fine lines and texture. I find that serum or cream-based foundations tend to work best for skin over 60.
Should I use a primer before foundation?
It depends on your skin. If your makeup tends to sink into fine lines or disappear midday, a primer can help. Choose one that’s hydrating and smoothing, not too silicone-heavy. I often skip primer on most days and focus on good skincare instead. If I am going to wear one, I use this one.
Is liquid or powder foundation better for aging skin?
In most cases, liquid foundation is the better choice. It blends more easily and adds moisture. Powder foundations often settle into lines or cling to dry patches, which can age the face unnecessarily. If you do prefer powder, look for hydrating or creamy formulas.
How do I keep foundation from settling into wrinkles?
Start with well-moisturized skin, and apply your foundation sparingly. Use a damp sponge or a brush to blend it in gently, then only set with a small amount of powder if absolutely necessary. Foundation tends to migrate into lines when it’s applied too heavily.
What’s the best way to apply foundation on mature skin?
My go-to method is to apply a thin layer with fingers or a brush. You can also press it into the skin with a damp makeup sponge. This helps remove any excess product and leaves a more natural finish. Some women like to blend down their neck slightly to avoid a line at the jaw, but be careful of it transferring to your clothing.
Do I need to use setting powder or spray?
Only if you feel your foundation slips or needs more longevity. For mature skin, I recommend setting powder only in areas that tend to get oily, usually the T-zone. A setting spray can be helpful to give a soft, dewy finish, especially if your skin is dry.
Can I wear full coverage foundation after 60?
You can, but I’d suggest using a buildable formula rather than one that’s labeled “full coverage” from the start. You want your foundation to look like skin, not a mask. Spot-concealing where needed can often do more for a polished look than layering on more foundation.
How do I find the right foundation shade for my skin tone?
If you’re shopping in person, ask for a sample or test the shade on your jawline in natural light. Online, try brands that offer shade-matching tools or samples. Undertone is key—most women over 60 like a bit more warmth to bring life to the complexion. If you’re unsure about your undertone, I’ve shared some simple tips to help you determine yours here.
Today, I’m sharing cruelty-free foundations for mature skin, but there are many more great ones from companies without that designation. Here are more foundations with wonderful reviews that I’m anxious to try:
Have you tried any of these? I’d love to hear your favorite foundation for mature skin in the comments.

I have been using Laura Geller baked powder foundation, and like both how it feels, and how it looks. It does not feel dry, and unlike liquid foundations I have used as I have gotten older, it does not settle into facial lines.
For me, I’ve found Estée Lauder Futurist Hydra Rescue Moisturizing Makeup to be absolutely ideal. It’s moist, goes on like a dream and looks invisible, yet provides great coverage. I also love that you never waste a drop because of the unique pump tube that it comes in. No more struggling to pour out the last vestiges of the bottle.
That sounds really smart of them.
Great post, Jennifer. I’m a big fan of Ariane Poole and Nikol Johnson. Their companies make wonderful cosmetics for women in the “best half” of life. They also are artists who do wonderful application videos.
Perfect timing as I need a new foundation. I’ve used Laura Mercier for many years, but I’m at the point where my skin has changed dramatically (dry and lines) and I want a less expensive alternative.
You’ve listed some great suggestions.
Hope your husband is recovering well and you are able to relax a bit.
Thank Yvonne. Boredom is setting in already for him so this will be fun.
My favorite face products these days are by Trinny London. I always prefer a very sheer coverage now and the BFF Cream does a lovely job of just adding a little something. If I need more I use the BFF Destress. Thanks for your info – it all helps with what to try next.
Great post, Jennifer! I am going to try the Ilia line. I’ve been intrigued by it and with Sephora’s sale going on right now, it’s a good time. I had been using Revlons Illuminance Skin-Caring Foundation but they seemed to have discontinued it and released something different. So, since I’ve got switch to something else, it’s a perfect time to try the Ilia.
It’s a lovely line…I use so many of their products.
My daughter introduced me to Ilia’s skin tint a few years ago and it’s my favorite. However, I also like Jones Road What the Foundation. It leaves a dewey finish which I sometimes like and sometimes think is too oily looking so I put a matte primer over it. I may try the SOS spray as I have a bit of rosacea. Thanks for the recommendations.
I love, love, love that spray! It helps clean around the eye area too which is helpful for occular rosacea.
I’m on my second pot of Jones Road “What the Foundation” and will probably reorder. It is light and buildable and feels good on my skin. I apply it with my fingers and then buff with a brush. (I also ordered the Jones Road foundation brush but am not a fan.)
Good to know, thanks for letting us know. I really love their eyeshadows.
I’ve never been a big wearer of makeup, but I really like Jones Road’s “no makeup makeup” look. I have Miracle balm in a bunch of shades and it keeps my skin nourished all day. I do wear a moisturizer with spf underneath, as well as a hyaluronic acid serum, but it’s a system that I’ve been using for about 18 months and it suits my skin and personality. They have just launched a tinted moisturizer which I’m eager to try as well.
Thanks for these suggestions. I love Laura Mercier’s Real Flawless foundation. It’s light to medium coverage and doesn’t settle in my lines. Only drawback is no SPF but I wear it over Paula’s Choice Essential Glow Moisturizer SPF 30 with Kiwi and Licorice (love it!).
It’s smart to wear over sunscreen. I never rely on a foundation for that coverage because you have to apply so much to be effective.
I’ve been using Estée Lauder Futurist Hydra Rescue for the last couple of years. I loved it when I first started using it, but lately it seems to be settling into my lines very quickly, no matter how carefully I apply it. I’ve been thinking about trying Jones Road What the Foundation. It is supposed to be good for dry skin. But the reviews are so mixed on it; people either seem to love it or hate it. Have you tried it?
I have not tried it
Thanks for this post. I also love Ilia’s skin tint. However, I wish they would change the packaging. I find that, after about a third of the product is used, it starts leaking around the top. This is messy, results in lost product, and keeps me from taking it when I travel. Customer service has been very responsive and sent me a new bottle, but it has happened now repeatedly. It is annoying enough that I would switch, but I can’t find a similar “clean” product that I like as well and that makes my skin feel as good.
That’s very frustrating!
I feel really out of it because I’ve only tried Ilia products. I have always used Estee Lauder foundation. I buy it at Nordstrom and they really help with what works best. I’ve used many different ones over the years but I just stick with Estee Lauder. I appreciate all the work you do to show us all these different products.
Love Estée Lauder! I’ve tried a couple of others over the years but always go back. Can’t beat their Double Wear!
You suggest blending foundation slightly down your neck beyond the jaw line. Makes sense but how do you then keep it from rubbing off on your collar of an outfit?
I seldom do that because most products smoosh onto my collars. It’s better to find a foundation that really blends in, then there isn’t a line. My neck is much pinker than my face so they will never match.
Hi Jennifer,
I just started receiving your blog. I am 68 years old, and I am all for health, fashion and beauty. I haven’t tried any of the foundations you had listed, but I am going to try some. I like a natural look. Love your blog!
Welcome Vicki!
I’ve never been able to wear foundation, and even most tinted moisturizers feel to heavy and confining on my skin. Recently started using Thrive illuminating primer on its own and I love the feel. gives a subtle glow, but no real coverage. I also like Clinique even better primer, but do use just a drop and mix with my moisturizer. I’d love to try some of the products you mention in your post!
I love the Ilia (perfect match for my fair olive skin!) and the Merit stick, which is pretty much a cheaper dupe for the Bobbi Brown stick foundation ( still love). Hope you will spill the tea on the RMS shadows! I fell for Trinny’s in the pots. They were warmer toned than advertised or shown online and don’t last. I keep coming back to my Bobbi Brown eyeshadow sticks. So I have held off on RMS.
They are very warm and very, very shiny! I watched her talk about the matte, but it’s not matte on me.
Great post today, I recently experienced the House of Colour and found that I am still a winter. She also applied makeup and that included a primer, a very lightweight foundation and a light powder then a mist. It was great. Everything felt light and as if I wasn’t wearing any makeup at all. It will take me a while to get the hang of applying with a Kabuki brush but I really like the way it stayed without settling into my fine lines and stayed on all day, which is great with our humidity.
Do they make their own foundation? That’s fascinating.
I would love suggestions for foundations that won’t irritate my eyes if I use it around the eye area. I find this is a problem. Thanks.
I never put mine on my
Lids or close up to my lash lines.
