The Best Fall Lip Colors for Mature Skin

I can’t tell you how many lipsticks I’ve bought over the years that ended up shoved in a drawer, right next to the “miracle” lip liner that never actually worked a miracle. The color looked perfect in the store… and then I got home and looked like I hadn’t slept in a week.

The truth is, your skin’s undertone will always determine which shades are most flattering. It’s why some lipsticks brighten your face instantly while others make you look washed out. (If you’re not sure about your undertone, I wrote a post on how to figure out your undertone here)

Once you’ve got that piece sorted, the fun begins. Fall’s my favorite time to experiment with lipstick, and the best fall lip colors for mature skin add depth and polish without ever feeling heavy or harsh.

Is it any wonder we get overwhelmed with the number of options we have?

The Best Fall Lip Colors for Mature Skin

Berry Tones

Berry shades are fall’s natural step up from summer pinks. They add energy to the face and pair beautifully with cozy fall fabrics. The key is depth… look for a berry that has enough richness to flatter mature skin without tipping into dark and vampy territory.

Raspberry, cranberry, and mulberry tones are some of the easiest to wear. Depending on your coloring, you may find warmer berries more lively or cooler berries a bit fresher, but in either case, they’re a flattering way to brighten your face.

ILIA’s Wild Aster is described as a berry brown with cool undertones.

If you are wondering how to balance a stronger lip, I shared some helpful tips in Makeup Mistakes That Make You Look Older. Spoiler: less is often more.

Rich Plums

Plum is one of those shades that feels made for fall — but it’s also one of the easiest to get wrong. The very cool, violet-heavy plums can leave some faces looking tired, while flat, dark browns can feel heavy and drain the skin. The sweet spot is a plum with enough depth to feel seasonal, but with a base that adds life back to your complexion.

If your coloring leans warm, plums with a red-brown base tend to look softer and more natural. If you lean cool, plums with a touch more blue or violet often look fresher and more refined. Either way, the goal is a shade that enhances rather than overwhelms.

Plums are especially chic with fall textures — think camel, tweed, or deep navy — and they can instantly elevate a simple outfit.

The right plum is sophisticated, modern, and pairs beautifully with fall fabrics like suede, wool, and tweed.

Berry Red

CHARLOTTE TILBURY WALK OF NO SHAME...TESTING THIS OUT AND NOT SURE I LIKE IT ON ME

Red lipstick is timeless, but not all reds play nicely with mature skin. The bright, movie-star shades can look jarring against softer coloring, while very dark reds can feel heavy. That’s where berry reds come in…they have the richness of red but with a softer edge that makes them easier to wear.

Berry reds work especially well in fall because they echo the season’s depth without feeling costume-y. They add instant polish and look elegant with everything from denim to a black dress.

The key is finish: deep colors in a very matte formula can be unforgiving, so I look for creamy or satin textures that keep lips comfortable and avoid emphasizing dryness.

CHARLOTTE TILBURY MATTE REVOLUTION HYDRATING LIPSTICK

Charlotte Tilbury’s M.I. KISS is a deep, berry red with enough brown in the base to make it wearable rather than theatrical. The formula has a soft matte finish that feels comfortable, so it gives impact without pulling every bit of moisture from your lips. Matte lipstick combined with a deep color can be a tricky combo.

Brick Reds

Brick red is one of the most wearable ways to do red in the fall. It has warmth and depth that feel right with the season, and it tends to look softer than the classic blue-reds. On mature skin, brick red can add vibrancy without looking harsh.

These shades lean toward rusty or earthy, which makes them especially chic with camel, olive, or denim. They’re bold enough to make a statement, but not so bright that they overwhelm the rest of your face.

If you’ve avoided red in the past because it felt “too much,” brick is often the gateway shade that changes your mind.

MERIT SIGNATURE LIP LIGHTWEIGHT LIPSTICK IN TIGER

Merit’s Tiger is a brick orange-red that feels modern but still wearable. The lightweight formula gives you color without heaviness, so it looks intentional rather than overpowering.

Spiced Nudes

Nude lipstick gets a bad rap because the wrong one really can wash you out — especially as we get older. The trick is choosing a nude with enough depth and a hint of spice so your lips don’t disappear into your face.

Instead of pale beige (which makes most of us look tired), look for shades touched with caramel, rosewood, or soft terracotta. These shades read as “nude,” but they still add life and definition. They’re easy to wear every day and pair beautifully with stronger eye makeup if that’s your focus.

This Copper Dune shade from Jane Iredale is a coppery nude with depth that keeps lips from looking flat. The hydrating formula is comfortable and makes it an easy all-day choice.

Deep Roses

Deep rose has always been my favorite lip shade. It’s polished without being loud, feminine without feeling sweet, and it works for almost any occasion. I have more lipsticks in “rose” than any other color.

The beauty of rose is that it can lean warm or cool — the trick is finding your sweet spot. For fall, I love roses with a hint of mauve or brown in the base. They feel more autumnal, adding just enough depth to flatter mature skin without tipping into heavy.

MERIT DEEP SIGNATURE LIP LIGHTWEIGHT LIPSTICK IN SUNDAY

Merit’s Signature Lip in Sunday is exactly that. It is a muted rose with depth, lightweight on the lips but with enough color payoff to look intentional. The formula is comfortable, which means you can wear it all day without feeling like you need to check a mirror every hour.

If you want an affordable way to test the look, Covergirl’s Continuous Color Lipstick in Smokey Rose has been around forever for good reason. It is a soft rosewood shade that flatters a wide range of skin tones and gives you that polished look without a splurge.

Prep and Care for Lips in Fall

Even the most flattering lipstick won’t look great on dry, flaky lips and fall air doesn’t do us any favors. A little prep goes a long way toward making color apply smoothly and stay put.

You don’t need anything fancy. A damp washcloth or soft toothbrush can gently exfoliate your lips before applying color. Some women swear by sugar scrubs, but I find them a bit much. A simple lip mask at night and a hydrating balm during the day make more of a difference than you’d think.

Lip Liner Tips for Mature Skin

CHARLOTTE TILBURY LIP CHEAP LIP LINER

Lip liner has gone from a nice-to-have to mandatory as my lips have aged and those pesky little lines have gotten deeper. It keeps color from drifting where it shouldn’t and gives softer lips the structure they’ve quietly lost over time.

You can match your liner to your lipstick or use one that’s close to your natural lip color—just go a shade deeper. That way, when the lipstick fades (as it always does), you’re not left with that unfortunate ring around your mouth.

I like to sketch the edges lightly, then fill in the whole lip before applying color. It helps lipstick last longer and fade more evenly. I’m a big fan of the Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat because it stays on better than any others I’ve tried and doesn’t dry out my lips.

Lipstick isn’t about chasing trends or buying into hype—it’s about finding shades that make you look a little more alive and feel a little more polished. Fall is the perfect season to play with deeper tones, but the best ones are always the colors that flatter you. A good lipstick should work with your face, your skin, and your life—not against them.

  1. I love the secret salma on you best too. It looks very natural but not pale. The more raspberry ones seem to me to make light skin look too white. I have been playing with my lipsticks lately and layering two together to see if I can make a shade I like better. I have also taken small containers and mixed colors together. I figured I might as well see if I could use some of them that way instead of throwing them out. I really really like the long lasting lipsticks with the applicator. They do stay on a long time while im out. Revlon changed the formula they were using tho and they dont stay as well as they used to. I need to look and see what other options are out there now,

  2. Thank you, I tend to nude to light pink lipstick and I use gloss more than anything. I should try a little color , the Charlotte Tilbury Secret Salma I might be able to handle…thanks for a great tutorial.I think my undertone is on the cool side, i read your post on how to determine undertones and still can’t figure things out…….

  3. For me, finding the right color is anxiety inducing! And I’ve made sooooo many mistakes. I want a red lipstick that is bright and that doesn’t skew brown or purple on me. So many reds are just too deep for me. I think a red the color of that Talbots vest you tried on might be good. The hunt continues….any suggestions are welcome!
I did find a good neutral for me. Soft pinky beige. With a pink lip liner it stays in the pinker range. Tom ford Spanish pink. Pricey but for the right color….well, I’ll gulp and move on!

    1. If it’s the right color, sometimes it’s worth the price!

My favorite fall lipstick is Rimmel #066 Heather Shimmer. I have auburn hair and medium/fair skin. This has it all–berry, bronze, and the shimmer that is subtle. It goes with almost everything I wear except for the bright pinks or cherry reds, which I never wear.

  5. My favorite go to Fall lipstick is Revlon’s Super Lustrous Rum Raisin, never fails me. As I’ve aged and my lips tend to be drier I started a couple of years ago using a lip mask at night by IZMO New York, Lip Sleeping Mask, it’s excellent! Thank you for all the great advice!

    1. Revlon makes great lipstick

      1. Yes, it’s always made a great lipstick, but the company’s in trouble. They’re still emerging from their 2023 bankruptcy. Hope springs eternal as they are planning on a big new launch in 2026. Fingers crossed for great success … again.

  6. I have been wearing Canyon Outlast by Covergirl year around for over 20 years. It blends with my corals, rusts, and sunwashed reds. It works with all my soft autumn colors without being too deep for my neutral skin tone.

  7. Buying lipsticks really can be overwhelming. I’ve learned over the years to stick to mauves and berry colors. I have to pick darker shades because they appear lighter on me for some reason. Trial and error I guess.

  8. I tend to stay away from any dark lipstick unless it is a subdued red that almost matches the color of my lips. Otherwise, I wear a shade of pink, lots of pink. And I have to stay away from lipstick with fragrance because my husband is allergic to perfumes and can tell when I put on a frangranced lipstick!

  9. I love plums with warm tones. Great look at various lines of lipsticks. I can relate to the drawer of lipsticks. I can’t buy anymore until I get through at least a couple tubes…that’s hysterical, because I’ll see something I have to have.😂

    1. They do expire too so check how old they are. I need to clean mine out.

  10. I am also “cool” and have lips with quite a bit of color so I reach for many of the colors you talk about here. That Charlotte TIlbury Secret Salma looks so polished on you! Classic red lips, even if cool toned, still evade me – it is difficult for me to see that they look good on my more low contrast face.

    1. I’m struggling with that too. I want to be able to pull it off but it’s never as flattering as I hoped.

Great information. Helpful Lipstick is hard for me to figure out. Thanks

  12. Kathryn Heifetz says:

Hi, Thank you for this post. Another wonderful lipstick source (and veil primer) is Hourglass Cosmetics. For reference, I am a 68 yo brunette. I love their Unlocked Satin Creme lipsticks. Not too matte or glossy. Definitely not aging. I regularly use Instinct, a blue red, when I want a stronger color, and Cypress, a berry pink, for regular use. Best part — cruelty free and vegan!

    1. That’s a brand I need to try! I have a few other things from their line. Thanks for the nudge.

  13. Debra Ross says:

    I love Charlotte Tilbury’s
secret Salma on you. It is not too intense and adds a nice life. I have tried this colour on with the same results but have never purchased it mainly because it is matte and I worry about it being too drying. I have had professional drapings and have been told that I am a soft summer ( and a light spring). Conclusion I am neutral. You have similar colouring to mine. Walk of No Shame from my eye is too heavy on you. Does it shift in to autumn?

I completely get trying a lipstick on in the store and then pitching it after finding it doesn’t work. When I find a great colour sadly it always seems to be discontinued.

    1. It feels too saturated on me. Part of that is the matte texture too.

  14. Shari Uecker says:

The Secret Salma is beautiful on you!! I agree. The Walk No Shame is a NO!

  15. Diane barnes says:

    Jennifer,
Thank you for the honest review of lipsticks, I too have a graveyard of shades the turned out to be all wrong. As we age this process is a bit more complicated, thanks for doing the leg work. I am going to look into the Jane Iredale product you mentioned her products work well for me at this stage of the game.

    Diane

  16. Dark winter here (fair olive skin). Thanks for introducing me to Merit lipsticks. They are the best. And berry colors are my very best. Merit Fashion (and Power for my cool red), MAC Captive, Revlon Mauvy Night. I like a clear lip pencil to keep things in the lines, though they can be hard to source.

    1. Merit makes fabulous lipstick! “Millennial” is my fav “pinkie nude from them.

  17. My new favorites are from MAC. They are a soft shiny finish and fall into the Nude color line. Signature Move is a “greige” and Alone Time is considered a “mauve brown”. They are nice for fall with a pink toned liner like Whirl. I love trying new lipsticks…I can relate to the drawer full of prior poor choices!😄

  18. Jennifer, the Secret Salma lipstick is a gorgeous colour on you. My favourite Clarins lipstick shade has been discontinued (don’t you hate when that happens) so I’m on the hunt for a new raspberry-ish shade.

    1. I do hate when that happens!

  19. Carol Ann says:

What about an invisible (no color) lip liner?

    1. Those are great if you can find a good one. Do you have a suggestion?

  20. Just bought a tube of “ELF” lip plumping gloss in “Mocha Twist” 82454 – to leave in my car. I like to reapply while I’m out and about! It has a nice tingly feel and is kind a of a ‘no brainer’ warm neutral. And the price – I think it was $6.00!! Recently had to replace my favorite MAC shade – “Dozen Carnations” with “Gummy Bare”…it’s a pretty good ‘dupe’…DC is a discontinued color…Both are “orangy reds” and I use neutral “Whirl” or “Roar” lip liner underneath. A new lipstick, in the RIGHT color is a mood boost!!

    1. Agreed! Lipstick is such an easy way to boost your mood and freshen your look!
