The Best Everyday Crossbody Bags for Women Over 60

At this point in life, I’m done with bags that misbehave. If it slides off my shoulder, digs into my arm, or feels like I’m hauling a small boulder… it’s out. Enter the humble crossbody. It stays put, carries the essentials, and doesn’t require constant fussing.

I pulled together a list of my favorite crossbody bags for women over 60, from budget-friendly finds to the kind of investment bags that make you wonder how you ever lived without them. A few of my longtime companions made the cut (including one I once bought on a “just looking” trip to duty-free — we know how that goes).

What Makes a Good Everyday Crossbody Bag

I’m far pickier now than I was before, and that’s saying a lot because I’ve always been pretty persnickety. If a bag is not practical and comfortable, I won’t carry it. Here’s what matters to me.

Lightweight but Structured

A heavy tote feels fine when it’s empty. But once you add your wallet, keys, glasses, and phone, it can feel like a punishment. I look for bags that hold their shape without weighing a ton.

Adjustable Strap

Our torsos are not one-size-fits-all. A strap that can be shortened or lengthened makes a huge difference. If the strap is too long or cuts across the wrong spot, that bag will sit in the closet.

Secure Closure

A bag that zips closed makes me feel less like an easy target, but it really comes down to your preference. Interior pockets are a bonus because no one enjoys digging for keys in the parking lot.

The Right Size

Tiny bags rarely hold enough. Oversized bags can feel like you are hauling luggage. I stick with a medium-sized crossbody that holds the essentials and nothing more.

Timeless Style

At this point, I’m less interested in the latest “it” bag. A neutral color, minimal hardware, and a classic shape will quietly go with everything.

Crossbody Purses I Personally Own

WAVERLY 2 BAG / LIGHTWEIGHT COAT size XS

I own this Waverly 2 bag by Lo & Sons convertible travel bag in three different colors, which should tell you how perfect it is. It comes with a 2-part adjustable strap, so I can easily transform it from a crossbody bag to a belt bag, shoulder bag, or wristlet! It features two interior mesh pockets, one zipper pocket, and three card slots, plus a key leash, which I find very handy. I never travel without one worn as a belt bag, containing my phone, passport, hand sanitizer, lipstick, and a few credit cards.

SIMILAR CROSSBODY

While perusing a consignment store for vintage brooches, I fell hook, line, and sinker for this used blue Louis Vuitton bag. It’s in amazing shape and looks like the previous owner only carried it once or twice! I’ve never had good luck at consignment stores, so this was a surprising treat.

THIS GUCCI BAG (RESALE HERE) WAS A SPLURGE AT DUTY-FREE MANY YEARS AGO & IS MY MOST WORN BAG.

Years ago, I splurged on the Gucci Soho Disc Crossbody in black at duty free. At the time, it felt indulgent, but it turned out to be worth every penny. The size is just right, the leather has held up beautifully, and it goes with absolutely everything! It’s become one of my most worn bags and still feels current. Sadly, Gucci no longer makes this style, but you can often find it pre-loved on resale sites like here… and here…and here. If you come across one in good condition, I highly recommend it.

Amazon Essentials Crossbody Flap Bag in black with simple flap design, lightweight body, and everyday size.

Amazon Essentials Crossbody Flap Bag

.This simple flap style shows why clean lines always look more expensive. It’s lightweight, easy to wear, and roomy enough for your daily basics without being bulky. A simple, no-nonsense option that works with almost anything in your closet.

Hollace Tote Mini Edition

A small tote that doubles as a crossbody is one of my favorite hybrids. This one from Anthropologie has a structured shape that looks polished yet not stiff, and the raisin shade is a subtle twist on classic brown. It is roomy enough for your essentials, yet compact enough that it never feels overwhelming. The detachable strap gives you the option of carrying it by the handles or wearing it crossbody.

Dange Dover Micah Neoprene Crossbody Bag

While technically slightly over $100, the Micah crossbody from Dagne Dover is a smart choice. The neoprene material is lightweight, soft, and easy to clean, which makes it perfect for busy days or travel. The dune color is a soft neutral that blends with almost anything, and the wide strap gives it a sporty edge while staying comfortable on your shoulder. Inside, the compartments keep everything where it belongs.

Best Crossbody Handbags Under $300

Lo & Sons Aoyama Crossbody

I have this purse in deep navy, and it’s also available in other shades. It’s buttery soft lambskin, and light as a feather. It comes with additional straps that allow me to convert it into a shoulder bag, a shorter shoulder bag, a cross-body, and a handheld. I could not love it more! It’s made by a small, woman-owned company in New York that also manufactures my other travel bags. There’s a side zipper to easily stow my phone, and it has an inner leash to clip my keys on so I never have to dig for them.

Cuyana Mini Easy Zipper Tote in cappuccino leather with slim structured shape, top zipper, and crossbody strap.

Cuyana Mini Easy Zipper Tote

This is the smaller version of my favorite everyday tote, only now with the addition of a crossbody strap. The cappuccino shade is a soft neutral that works all year, and the zip-top keeps everything secure. It has the same clean lines and understated feel I love in the full-size tote, just scaled down for days when you don’t need to carry quite as much. I shared why the larger version has been my go-to in this post: Cuyana Leather Tote: The Perfect Everyday Bag.

Coach Legacy Zip Top Crossbody bag in black leather with structured body and adjustable strap.

Coach Legacy Zip Top Crossbody

Coach does timeless leather well, and this zip-top crossbody is no exception. The black leather gives it a polished look, while the structured shape means it never slouches. It’s the kind of bag that works with everything from jeans to a simple dress and will stay in rotation for years.

Clare V. Midi Crossbody Woven Bag

This woven crossbody is a stylish mix of texture and tone. The black and brown combination makes it easy to pair with both dark and neutral outfits, while the size is just right for daily wear. Clare V. bags always have a slightly playful edge, and this one feels modern but still wearable.

Crossbody Purses Over $500

DeMellier Vancouver Leather Crossbody Bag

I adore my DeMellier Vancouver bag! The strap can easily be doubled to wear as a short-shoulder bag or lengthened to wear as a crossbody. Its structured shape holds quite a lot, and the clasp snaps closed securely.

Tom Ford Tara Mini Crossbody in graphite grained leather with structured flap design, gold hardware, and medium size interior.

Tom Ford Tara Mini Crossbody

The Tara Mini is proof that “mini” does not always mean small. This version has enough space for the things you actually carry such as your phone, wallet, and glasses, while still keeping a slim profile against the body. The grained graphite leather is a deep gray that feels modern yet versatile, and the flap front with gold hardware adds just the right amount of polish.

Mulberry Islington Leather Bucket Bag

Mulberry is renowned for its exquisite leather, and the Islington bucket bag is a prime example. This bag comes in. 8 colors to fit every color palette. The bucket shape gives you more space than a slim crossbody, while the zip-top keeps everything secure. It has enough structure to look polished but still feels relaxed.

Final Thoughts

The best crossbody isn’t the trendiest or the flashiest; it’s the one that balances comfort, proportion, and timeless style. That’s the bag you’ll actually reach for.”

Do you carry a crossbody most days, or do you still reach for a tote or satchel?

  1. These handbags are all beautiful. Ever since I’ve had a bad shoulder I haven’t used a crossbody purse. I always have a bag with handles. I had shoulder surgery awhile back so I’ve been using some crossbody handbags now. Some of these would be great to try.

  2. I wear only crossbody bags now. You missed a great source, Portland Leather Co. My daughter and several friends and acquaintances LOVE them for their style, pure leather workmanship, durability and color and leather choices. Most of us have a “problem,” we own several!! For a genuine leather bag, you cannot match the price and quality.

  3. I have switched almost completely to crossbody bags. They are so much more comfortable to wear, and I got so tired of constantly hitching shoulder bags back up onto my shoulder. This past summer I treated myself to a Hobo Sheila bag in a beautiful white leather daisy pattern. So much fun and I love it! I also recently purchased a Kate Spade Mini Dumpling crossbody. I thought it might be too small, but it’s surprisingly roomy. Thanks for all the great suggestions!

    Hi Jennifer!

Crossbody bags are the only way to go, especially when traveling! Who wants to lug around a huge bag anymore????

  5. I love this blog today! Crossbody and hands free is the only way to go in my opinion. I jumped on the Lululemon bandwagon after seeing my granddaughters with them and got the xl crossbody for traveling. It’s waterproof and stores all the essentials. I use a leather Sak crossbody for every day. I love that it has a lot of slots for your cc’s and different id cards but also can hold some actual paper money too. And I have a neutral colored classic Coach on hand too for a few occasions.

I’m a big fan of cross body bags – life is easier! My favourites are from Pom Pom London. My go-to is the Original Plus – all leather, comes in many colours, zipper top, two outside zippers and one inside zipper. The leather strap is adjustable and they let you choose two different fabric straps to change things up. Shipping from the UK is fast and free and mine was $217.00 Canadian. Check them out online!

    1. I will have to check them out!

Hi, My favorite crossbody is Lo & Sons “Pearl” bag. My first one I carried for ten (10) years. I just replaced with an identical one.
These are well worth the money.

    1. I love my Pearl bags!

  8. Christine Arquilla says:

Hi, Jennifer. I think the crossbody bag is the most versatile and just plain useful purse anyone came up with (so long as it is large enough to hold your essentials). I love my black leather Brahmin Mini Duxbury cossbody bag that I bought in 2006 so much that it has become my most used purse. It was a real splurge back then but the price has amortized to less than 5 cents per day over the past 19 years. Sadly, the company no longer makes this particular crossbody. However, they still make several high-quality crossbody styles in various colors and patterns that are beautiful and just as useful. I also have a Nina white rhinestone evening clutch with a silver crossbody chain for special occasions that gets a lot of use. I’m considering getting either the Waverly 2 bag or the Micah bag since I’m looking for a new travel bag for next year. As always, thanks so much for your reccomdations.

    1. Brahmin bags are stunning!

  9. Melissa Ritchie says:

I am with you! After having a shoulder that bothered me, I switched to a smaller crossbody and no more sore shoulder! Thank you for the recommendations!

  10. I use only crossbody bags with the exception of some special evening bags. I am tempted by a few of yours.

  11. I mix it up…faves are Quince convertible cross body, DeMellier (same as yours), Lo & Sons Pearl, my old Minkoff MAC and Rocker cross bodies, and my vintage Coach bags.

    1. Vintage Coach bags are so cool!! I wish I’d kept mine.

  12. Thank you for this post and I love your personal purse selection you own….you always have superb taste.

  13. Sharon K. says:

Love my crossbody bags. I don’t focus on lots of compartments, as I use a couple of small zip bags to hold my small essentials. They make it fast to switch bags. I like the Portland Leather “Metro” style. And really love my Osgoode Marley bag, buttery soft but great structure.

    1. I love using small zippered bags to hold essentials. I have a blue monogrammed one that goes between my larger bags.

  14. I was surprised to see you did not include the ili cross body bag that you featured several years ago. I purchased one (through your blog) and loved it so much I bought another one later so when the first one wears out, I’ll have a replacement. Then, for my summer bag this year I bought a similar style ili bag in a light color. The size of each bag is just right. They hold everything I need with a bit of extra room in case I need to tuck something else into them. My favorite feature, which I look for in a purse, is the card holder slots and cash pocket. I have eliminated my wallet which I hate to have to fish out of a bag to pull out any cards I may need. They are securely tucked into a side, zipped pocket which is easily accessible. The newest purse has the RFID blocking feature to keep credit cards secure from digital thefts. They both are in the under $200 range, closer to $100.

  15. Your crossbody selection is nice. My favorite crossbody is Tumi. So exceptional!

  16. I have used a crossbody for years. Love them. For me it helps distribute the weight of my contents. Also I feel it makes me confident to walk with my hands free.
    Thanks for your blog, Jennifer

  17. Check out the Pom Pom of London bags. There are multiple sizes colors and the straps are changeable so you can use a wide one if the narrow one hurts your shoulder. I love mine!

    1. Smart idea! I spotted a lady with a wide strap on her red crossbody just yesterday.

  18. This post is so timely for me because I just returned from a trip and decided I need to upgrade my cross body travel bag. Can you tell us if the Waverly 2 you’re carrying is the small or the large size? Thanks!

    1. There’s not much difference between the sizes so I bought the large

  19. Check out Pom Pom London – great cross body bags

  20. Pat Patterson says:

Happy Fall, I’ve had to go crossbody bags because of shoulder issues (frayed edges in left rotator cuff and bursitis) carrying handbags can be painful. I still have a few handle bags which I adore. Have a great day

    1. Ouch. I’m sorry to hear about your shoulder.
