The Modern Way To Wear Leggings After 50 In 2025

Let’s put this old myth to bed right now: leggings are not dead, and yes, women over 50 can absolutely wear them. Do Leggings Still Look Stylish After 50?

Without a doubt! Leggings have come a long way since their streetwear heyday in the ’70s and ’80s. Today’s styles are more sophisticated, structured, and wearable than ever. Many now mimic the look of jeans (jeggings), with refined fabrics and elevated finishes that make them suitable for everyday wear…even for women in their 60s and beyond.

So, can you still wear leggings over 50? Absolutely. Can you wear leggings and look polished? 100%. Should you wear leggings? If they’re comfortable and flattering, then yes, go for it!

Leggings Style That Actually Works After Fifty

Let’s start with the most critical element, the fabric.

The Best Fabric For Leggings That Don’t Show Everything

If you’ve ever cringed at the sight of someone wearing sheer, footless tights as leggings, you’re not alone. That’s not the look we’re after. The best leggings for older women are thick, opaque, and offer substantial stretch without becoming see-through. Look for:

  • Heavyweight Ponte Knit – Structured and polished.
  • Faux Suede – Soft and elevated, perfect for fall and winter.
  • Jeggings (denim leggings) – A great everyday alternative to jeans.
  • Velvet – Luxe, cozy, and surprisingly versatile.
  • Faux Leather – Yes, really. With the right fit, these can be fabulously chic and not at all ā€œtoo young.ā€

Pro tip: Fabrics with a four-way stretch and a high Lycra or Spandex content will maintain their shape better and offer a more flattering fit. Opt for darker colors like black, navy, or deep charcoal for the most slimming and versatile look.

Finding the Right Leggings Fit After 50 (Without Feeling Squeezed)

Leggings should hug your body comfortably, not strangle it. If your leggings feel like sausage casings, go up a size. You’ll look more put-together and feel a whole lot better.

Look for:

  • High-rise waistbands that don’t roll down.
  • Wide, flat waistbands that smooth the tummy.
  • No-see-through coverage for peace of mind.

What to Wear On Top with Leggings Over 50

No matter how fit you are, coverage is key. The golden rule is that your top should cover your crotch and backside. Most women feel more confident this way because it balances proportions and makes the look feel intentional.

Here’s what works best:

  • Tunic-length sweaters with shape (not boxy!)
  • Long blazers for a polished finish
  • Shirt dresses or long button-front blouses
  • Knee-length cardigans layered over fingertip-length tops
  • Short dresses that feel a tad too short on their own

Look for tops that gently skim your shape. You want length, not bulk. Side slits help with movement and keep the silhouette lean. And beware of chunky knits that can throw your proportions out of balance.

Real Life Outfit Ideas With Leggings After 50

Here’s how you can actually wear leggings day to day:

  • Travel Days – Ponte leggings with a lightweight tunic, long cardigan, and slip-on sneakers. Add a crossbody bag and you’re comfortable yet polished enough to go straight from plane to dinner.
  • Weekend Errands – Black leggings, a denim shirt, ballet flats, and a scarf or structured tote. Casual but pulled together.
  • Lunch With Friends – Faux suede leggings, a tunic blouse, loafers, and statement earrings. Relaxed but intentional.
  • At-Home Comfort – Super-stretch leggings with a drapey sweater. Add earrings and a neat top underneath for instant Zoom-readiness.
  • Dinner Out – Faux leather leggings with a silky blouse, long blazer, ankle boots, and a clutch. Chic without sacrificing comfort.

The Best Shoes to Wear With Leggings Over 50

Your shoes can make or break your leggings outfit. Here are some of the best options for mature women:

  • Ballet flats – Think Audrey Hepburn—always timeless. Perfect for errands with black leggings and a denim shirt.
  • Low-heeled shoes or sandals – Add sophistication without looking overdone. Try them with ponte leggings and a tunic.
  • Ankle booties – Great for fall and winter. They look sharp with faux leather leggings and a blazer.
  • Knee-high or riding boots – Classic and elongating, especially when matched to the color of your leggings.

Skip the stilettos. They rarely complement leggings and can veer into ā€œtrying too hardā€ territory.

  1. I wear tights or leggings for exercise or yoga. I wear a dress I had made in Vietnam with leggings. However, I have never embraced leggings for everyday wear. I wear skinny jeans, slim pants, skirts, or dresses. I see a lot of women who look nice in leggings but on the other side of the spectrum I see women who should wear more structured garments.

    1. I feel comfortable wearing leggings to the gym as well. I’ve thought of the dress over leggings idea however it looks like ā€œtrying too hardā€œ – when there are so many other options.

      1. Lydia Wozniak says:

Thank you for this post! I have quite a few pairs of leggings and I’m not ready to give them up. I always wear a longer top with them. Living in a colder climate (Wisconsin), they are great to layer under jeans on a frigid day. I even have several pairs that are fleece lined. So cozy!

  2. Apparently I haven’t yet accepted the idea of leggings over 50. I’ve toyed with the idea but need to wear what I feel comfortable wearing. I prefer the straight leg pants look especially by Eileen Fisher.

    1. I agree. I like leggings for the gym or yoga.

    2. Yes. I tried to like leggings. I bought 1 pair at the urging of friends. They never saw the outside world — donated. I will stick with straight and boot cut jeans. Whatever makes YOU comfortable…Happy Friday!!

    3. I’m 73 and have lots of leggings I am all about comfort. I have fleece lined ones for the cold weather. I don’t go many places that I need to dress up for these days . So I pair them with a variety of top, ankle boots, flats and sneakers. I love the versatility of them!

      1. Anne Deegan says:

I am 83 and wear leggins all the time…..in the summer I wear crop trews. Always with flat shoes or ankle boots. Everyone tells me i look amazing and even doctors have been known to compliment me on my fashion choices! I will wear leggings forever! So comfortable, and the fleece lined ones so cosy in the winter! I have always worn long tops as I was quite tall (less so now!)and the longer line has always suited me best. What a lovely article to read which has vindicated my choice of attire! Anne

      2. Diane Hardin says:

I agree it’s all about comfort for me.

      3. I am a young 73 too in total denial of old age go to gymand have about 10 pairs of keep fit leggings and black leggings for going out plus jeans you don’t need to wear fuddy duddy Marks and Spencer’s skirts

      4. Sandra (Nana) says:

Linda, you are my kind of gal. I am 86 and love my fleece leggings in the winter with a variety of long sweaters/tops. I am all for comfort and think I look pretty classy too. I might add that my 36 yr old g-daughter agrees….

  3. Great post, Jennifer. I agree with everything….I see many young people with too tight leggings and short tops. It’s not a pretty sight! I generally wear mine with long tops and knee high riding boots. It’s a classy look, warm too here in Colorado.

  4. Just the other day, I had pair of tights that rolled down, and kept rolling themselves down. Horrid things. Today I headed out in search of new tights, so thanks for the smile. Trusted brand names are no longer an assurance of quality.

    1. I am 66 yrs old.I never wore tights.I have always been over weight and have been prone to wear my clothes a bit baggie.I have lost 75 pounds.Yes wonderful but now I really need something to hold all of me .So I ordered leggings from Amazon.2 pairs for only $21.00!I thought they would be thin .To my surprise they are wonderful.I love, love ,love my legging, stretch pants whatever you wan’t to call them. They come in reg size, plus size, and extra plus size.
I have only wore them in the house ,I need to find some longer tops I am still a plus size 20.I have to say they do not roll down, and they are thick.I bought high top so they generously cover my stomach without rolling down or cutting in my stomach.
My adult children said they loved them on me and my 13 yr.old beautiful granddaughter who is my biggest critic gave me 2 thumbs up…

      1. Hello Maureen. What brand of leggings did you get from Amazon? I am also in my 60’s, losing weight and would love to check the brand out. Thank you!

      2. Yes, please! I’m 62 and gained some weight but can’t find thicker leggings that don’t roll down…I would love to know the brand, too!

      3. I would love to have the style or the name I need some like that

      4. Maureen not doing an ad here for Modlily but I love them. They make longer tops for women. They are very fashionable and come down to where you need them over leggings. They are made for women not kids or teens and they have style to them.

      5. Well when the grandkids approve it’s a winner!

      6. Agreed!

      7. Happy for you! ā¤ļø

    2. Yes. Had the same problem with rolling down but also realised that it happens more with certain underwear fabrics.

      1. Torrid has wonderful leggings I also found great ones at jJill and Kohl’s.
I wear leggings a lot. Comfort is big for me. I always wear tunics and long jackets. Love wearing leggings with booties and knee high boots
        I’m a size 16. I’m 66 years old

  5. One of your best posts Jennifer! I totally agree with all your tips. Leggings are wonderfully cosy in the winter months.. I love them with sweaters, but finding the right sweater can be challenging as many this season are very bulky. Thanks for the tips.

  6. Agree with most of the comments. Airports and public events can be a hoot! As I mature, I try not to wear items that are too tight,it just emphasizes what should not be in your face.So I think the size, etc is very important.to me, skimpy clothes on an older body are just tacky!. I am easing into this very slowly. Comfy, not revealing.Opaque tights are just slightly thicker than stockings and should not be worn as legging. Even my hairdresser complains about this item of women’s clothing.(and he has a lot of attractive women working for him!)

  7. Mollie Munshaw says:

Love this post! I wear Hue leggings all the time. They are the most comfortable and they stay up.
I am in my 80’s but still young looking. I make sure that I wear tops that cover my bottom.
Here in Canada you really need to wear leggings in the winter.
Look forward to your posts each day Jennifer.

    1. I can so relate to leggings in a Canadian winter! Not sure when you will see my bare legs again!

      1. Donna McCririck says:

Canada is a big country! We are not all living in freezing temperatures. I find that leggings are not warm enough for the coldest winter days and not cold enough to layer them. Early spring now and happy to wear my ankle length jeans or other slim pants in the sunshine. Love Hue for around the house but always size up so I dont look like a stuffed suasage.

      2. Hue makes great leggings and tights

    2. Susan Armstrong says:

You took the words right out of my mouth! Love Hue! Worth every penny and if budget doesn’t allow… you can order them on Poshmark… I have almost every colour possible!

      1. Hue makes a great legging

    3. Hi Molly, as a mid80s Canadian I know what you are saying about our Winters and how to dress fashionably. I live in fleece lined leggings and long top/sweaters topped off with almost to the knee coats/jackets. Booties or when the snow arrives high boots. I have always been fashion conscious, weigh 130 lbs with thin legs and a round tummy. My 35 year old granddaughter fluents me like a fashion piece and I am proud to tell my age. No lady parts showing and enjoy my appearance at home or out. You ladies that are on the fence, GO it is a comfie and fashionable experience.

    4. Mollie, I am with you. Also in Canada. These winters can be frightful and leggings with proper tops and boots are delightful. I am 86 and been wearing them since my adult g-daughter suggested they were “the thing” to wear. Love them and especially her!!

  8. Good info. I chuckled at you description to cover “crotch and backside”. It is sooooooo true. Airports can be a horror show. LOL Thank you.

    1. I wear leggings all the time in cooler weather, but always make sure my “lady parts” are covered by my top. If not, the leggings remind me of the “tights” we wore as little girls, only with no dress or jumper over them! Yuck!

  9. Love leggings and wear them year round here in Austin. Prefer a tunic or T with an unbuttoned long sleeve shirt over it. Boots and ballet shoes look classy and I often wear with my Birkenstock’s, in appropriate weather, due to feet issues! Great post Jennifer!

  10. Anne Woodyard (@MusicandMarkets) says:

LOVE leggings, always worn with the length top you describe. I’d consider “covering the lady parts” a valid style suggestion for ANY age! Just got a new pair of black velvet leggings in the mail today to wear with an emerald green finely pleated tunic top (sold as a dress at Zara, but it’s a tunic for my 6 ft frame!) for our upcoming New Year’s Jazz in Italy trip.

  11. I have never worn any kind of leggings because I have heavy legs and ankles. I tend to wear straight leg pants, but I look around at everyone else and I’m wondering if these wider legged pants make me look hopelessly out of fashion. I think the best fabric for me would be the ponte, but I think I already know how it will look. What’s a girl to do?

    1. Hi …… wear what you look good in not what fashion dictates!

  12. This is a trend I wish would disappear unless worn only in winter under a dress for warmth. Too many women get the look wrong, and oversized tops just make us look larger than we actually are.

    1. I agree. My husband said skinny pants are for skinny bodies.
Worn tastefully…great but many are wearing tops that barely come to their waist and there’s a lot of over throw.

  13. Debbie Davis says:

Love leggings and great tips- thanks! BTW – your hair is looking fabulous lately!!

  14. Great advice! I live in leggings in the cooler seasons, and even have some with fleece linings for the coldest weather – which unfortunately were dragged out this week in the Midwest. I loved those Chicos denim leggings on you and ordered them myself. They’re sooo comfortable and look nice, too. Tempted to try a velvet pair for the holidays!

  15. I usually wear leggings with a long sweater or a long blouse, almost always with riding boots. Thanks for the great tips!

  16. I’ve never been good at “dressing” myself, but am trying to learn and your blog is a first step! Unfortunately I’m still confused about leggings versus tights. Other than the thickness, I don’t understand when/how to wear one over the other.

    1. Leggings should clearly be labeled as such in the name. Tights are thinner fabric, and more closely resemble opaque tights.

    2. @Charlene & Jennifer: I distinguish the two by referring tights similar to that of pantyhose as also include a foot but are generally opaque as thicker in fabric plus may also include a subtle pattern or texture and come in a range of colours. Whereas leggings can come in various fabrics, weight, colours, patterns and lengths plus can be worn with or without a sock. With that said; that’s my personal take on the two …. ☺.

  17. Susan Gowan says:

I wear leggings often and paired with a tunic or dress and a flowy longer sweater or cape. They make me feel stylish and I agree there are many that need advice about leggings’ fabrics and shape. Thanks for this, Jenn!

    1. My pleasure Susan. I have a cape on my wish list this winter šŸ™‚

  18. I only wear leggings/jeggings in the winter with knee high boots. We currently have snow on the ground and the temperature is in the teens. No bare ankles for me. Long tunic sweaters are my choice to wear with the bottoms.

  19. Paulette Levy says:

With a tunic length top that does definitely cover all those parts you mention!

  20. well said! my chosen method is flowy long blouses or tunics….with ballet flats, with the usual assistance from Soma and Spanx…

    1. Christine says:

I’m hopefully not hurting anyone’s feelings here but have you seen the you tube video Leggings Aren’t Pants. It’s hilarious. That being said, after that I just can’t bring myself to wear them. I am a 62 year old mother of 8, grandmother of 15 and great grandmother of 2. I am not over weight and I love the way they look on other mature women but they just feel too breezy for me. Maybe after reading this I will gutsy up and give them a try. Love your blog and all of the posts.

      1. I saw that video. It is hilarious, but I ended up ignoring it. I’m 76 and wear leggings and tunics all the time. I hope they never go out of style. Try them again.

      2. Unfortunately some women wear a short top and all the leggings exposed! Yuk yuk & yuk! Honestly they have no idea! The bum area should NOT be exposed in leggings! Ever!! Simple no brainer. I wear them all the time. So comfy. You can dress them up or casual.

      3. I agree. They look best with your backside covered:)
