Weekend Reading 12.20.25

I had lunch with my friend Carol this week, and I noticed that she was reading on her Kindle when I arrived. It looked like such a smart thing to do. I’ve tried one before and had a hard time getting used to the back lighting…but it certainly looks easier than reading on my phone, which I’ve done on flights before. She showed me how she adjusted the lighting, so now I’m tempted to try one again. I know many of you love them, so honestly, how hard can it be for me to adjust?
Shopping to consider this weekend:
If you’re online shopping for gifts this weekend, there may not be too many options that will deliver in time…but there are lots of new fun things in the store because they’re already stocking spring merchandise.
- I tried on this pretty soft pink suede jacket and it’s beautifully made. I love the finishing details like suede covered buttons and gently rounded collar.
- I also spotted this faux fur jacket in the pretitest almod cream shade. The funnel collar is super popular this year and will keep you toasty warm.
- If you’ve got difficult feet like I currently do, these velvet slides would be fun for entertaining at home or holiday parties with a pretty pedicure.
- My Rag & Bone Slade blazer is marked down, which I can highly recommend. I needed the sleeves shortened and Nordstrom altered them from the shoulder which maintained the button detail on the sleeve. It worked brilliantly.
- Talbots looked pretty cleaned out at the store, but online is still well stocked. They have 40% off everything, so that’s something to consider because new spring merchandise in coming in.
Bestsellers this week:
- This Everywhere bag was a very popular item with readers this week. Could that mean lots of you have upcoming trips planned? We had been hoping to escape somewhere warm, but some medical things may keep us home.
- These organic corduroy pants are on their way to many in this community. I have the chalk, which is a perfect neutral for me.
- My favorite little diamond huggies were a huge best seller again this week! If diamonds are not in your budget, you might consider these pretty little lab-grown white sapphire huggies.
- These little travel containers (again, are you traveling?), which I’ve discovered are perfect for carrying a small amount of hand cream.
- Ruggable washable rugs are selling like hotcakes! I ordered this runner for my back hall and hope it comes before our guests arrive. Remember to use my code AWSL15 to save 15%.
In case you missed it:
- My favorite way to stay warm without overheating.
- Soft sweaters and comfy jeans at J.Jill.
- A furry try-on at Chico’s.
- Last-minute gifts you can actually get in time.
Have a fabulous weekend and be kind to yourself…it’s a stressful time of year.

Reading through the comments, I see many use either a Kindle or an iPad or tablet. My Kindle got crushed so when I was debating buying another, I asked friends and they all suggested I’d get more use out of an iPad. I bought another iPad and with the Kindle app can download many books. You can also download free ones if you have Amazon Unlimited, or the Libby app which you must have. I use my IPad all the time because I prefer the size of anything I read, including texts from my iPhone, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, all those apps, as well as reading books. Your iPhone and iPad are connected so if you take a picture on your phone, it automatically transfers to your iPad, as well as anything else you might use your phone to do. I just prefer the larger keyboard and font on my iPad to my iPhone. Obviously, it’s a personal preference, but I LOVE my iPad.
Great finds!
I wish I could use the kindle but am a big fan of a physical book
I am a book lover too but for travel they can be bothersome.
I agree with Lisa. It is difficult to buy a Kindle book on my iPad. I have hundreds of books on my Kindle app. I tried to get to a book I purchased in 2018 to reread it and I couldn’t find in my Library. I went to Amazon Kindle Store to buy it again and they said I already owned it and to just open. So I did and read 3 chapters and closed it. Well the next day, I couldn’t find it! It didn’t go to my library for three tries. I had to keep going to Amazon to buy and then open it again. Now it is in the Kindle app and I can just open from there. But what the hell?! Will my whole library transfer to a new Kindle?
I love the column of color on you Jennifer. You always look so elegant.
Merry Christmas! I am traveling for the holiday. It’s always a challenge to pack for the different climate in southern California coming from the northern end of the state.
I have always relaxed reading books and swore i’d never give up hard copies but tried Libby through the library on my laptop and use it constantly now. The only problem is if it’s a new book it can take a while to get it.
Enjoy your blog! Merry Christmas to you and your family!
Merry Christmas Sandy!
I love my kindle. Arthritis in my hands makes it hard to hold a book, where the kindle requires a light touch to turn pages. I usually read at night in bed and balance it on a pillow 🙂
Love the Huggies, pretty and comfortable too.
Jennifer, thanks for sharing your great finds. I find it helpful as still chugging along working with time at a premium. I bought the Talbots quilted jacket in cream with gold thread and faux fur collar. It is stunning. One of your readers mentioned perfect for Arizona winter ( thank you for the comment). I am headed there this week to meet my new grandson. I will be a stylish new grandma!
Congratulations on your new grandson!!
I love reading on the KIndle app on my tablet. I can adjust the back lighting to whatever level is comfortable for the conditions. My favorite thing is being able to enlarge or reduce the font. This makes a huge difference when I want to read without my glasses on!
Great point!
Hi Jennifer, I use the kindle app on my ipad to read while traveling., just be sure to download your book and open them if you are not connected to wifi. My ipad also has my games, emails, travel apps, packing lists, etc., truly a one stop entertainment device! Have a wonderful Christmas!
Good to know!
Jennifer, I was one who thought I just couldn’t leave a paper book behind for a Kindle. I was absolutely wrong. I LOVE my Kindle! I probably have over 300 books on it to read. I adjust the lighting brightness and warmth depending on time of day. I just learned the other day there’s an app called Libby where you can get free books from your local library. I get most of my books free or very low cost from bookbub.com.
I’ve borrowed books on Libby too! Great app
Reading with my Nook/Kindle/library apps on my tablet is the only way I read now.
I like that as it gets closer to my annual eye exam, I can increase the size of the print. Instead of holding it, I can rest it on my lap. As I have gotten older, holding an actual book causes pain in my wrist and hands.
Jennifer if you have an IPad try reading/listening to a book on it before purchasing another device. Easy to travel with.
Smart idea
Check out the newest Kindle 16 GB. My son bought me one and I love it!
It measures 4.5 x 6 inches and weights 5.5 oz. So easy to slip into any purse.
It sounds great!
Here for the column of color! Did a navy column with a dark cool green cardi over, silver necklace stack. ✅. I am getting ready to return to the office five days starting in January, so I have written out some simple outfit combos to reduce the decision fatigue. Have a wonderful holiday however, you end up spending it!
You’re so smart to plan ahead. I’ve begun planning mine the night and it’s actually added more fun to the process. Enjoy your holiday Shari!!
I look at the forecast and usually pick my outfits out the night before too if I’ll be going out. It gives me a chance to think of new combinations and jewelry. I will also take pictures of the outfits and jewelry with them and save them in a file for those days when i see a piece of clothing in my closet and can’t remember how I styled it last time. I read kindle on my tablet and set the background to night and change the contrast of the white letters to whatever the lighting requires. What kind of backlighting was your friend using? I also like that you can just spread your fingers on the screen to change the print size. If I’m just going to the doctors or somewhere I won’t have so much wait time I just read on my phone tho instead of taking my bulkier tablet.
I really like your teal outfit and I’m glad to see the color gaining traction as its my “navy”. I love feel of a book in my hand so I was late to try the Kindle. While I still prefer a printed book I keep a book or 2 on the Kindle. I can toss it in my purse when I know I’m going to have downtime in a waiting room. Its a great take-along when traveling. With all the traveling you do I suspect you will embrace it once you try it. Much better than reading a book on a phone.
We have a trip coming up that I think I’ll get one for. How hard can it be to get used to? 😉
You look great in your column of color. Eileen Fisher is a favorite of mine plus I am checking out the silk scarves. Absolutely stunning. And inspiring. I need help because we’re all running on fumes right now.
I love my kindle. I have an iPad too but you can’t easily make kindle purchases on it.
One last question. You’ve mentioned your foot lately. Have you hurt your foot?
Thank you for all the work you do for us. You are my first email I read every morning.
Old damage from many many years of ballet has finally caught up to me.
I just love my Kindle! I’ve been reading on it for as long as I can remember (I’m on my fourth Kindle), and honestly, I can’t read a real book anymore The convenience, plus the ability to read in bed and not disturb my husband too much, are real pluses. The downside…I can never remember the titles because I don’t see the books sitting at my bedside all the time!
LOL!!
RUGGABLE rugs are perfect for traffic or to liven up an area. I have a few in our home and they launder easily and come out of the dryer in new condition. The one area I have to be careful with is the stitching around the edges when running the vacuum, especially if the vacuum is very powerful. Otherwise, they are very durable even in high traffic areas. Yours look beautiful and the colors are very soothing.
I’m a big fan of anything soothing 😉
I love my Kindle Paperwhite. I don’t remember having any trouble transitioning. I still use the public library for new best sellers because of the cost of those on Kindle. I subscribe to Kindle Unlimited and get most of my books from that collection. I don’t use the library lending service for Kindle because the waitlist time is ridiculously long. Like you, I have two homes, and traveling between the two with books is super simple with a Kindle. Another feature I like is being able to change the font size. I just highly recommend it!
I just found your blog this year and have really enjoyed reading it. Thank you! and I wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas!
Welcome Cathy! Merry Christmas.
