The Jean Style Every Woman Over 60 Should Own

There’s no shortage of advice about the jeans every woman over 60 should be wearing. Most of it feels suspiciously written by someone who hasn’t wrestled with a dressing room mirror lately or tried to sit down after lunch.

I loved my skinny jeans once. Truly. But somewhere along the way, denim that required a deep breath, a prayer, and a calf tug lost its charm. These days, I want jeans that feel like denim, not a second skin applied with industrial strength adhesive.

That’s why straight-leg jeans are one of my favorite silhouettes. They’re timeless, flattering, and blessedly free of drama. When you find the right pair, they just work. No fussing. No adjusting. No wondering if you can bend over without consequences.

If there’s one jean style every woman over 60 should own, this is it. Let’s talk about why.

What Are Straight Leg Jeans?

Straight leg jeans do exactly what their name suggests: they fall straight down from the hip to the ankle. They’re looser than skinny but not sloppy. They’re usually fitted through the hips and give nice room in the thigh area. That straight line creates a balanced silhouette that flatters nearly every body type. Choosing the Right Fit

Fit is everything, especially with straight leg jeans. Because they’re not meant to cling, it’s important to find a pair that follows your shape without squeezing. Here are a few things I look for when I’m shopping for straight-leg denim:

  • Waist height: I gravitate toward mid- to high-rise jeans because they give a smoother line under tops and feel more secure. Low-rise options are out there, but they don’t do our midsections any favors. Mid-rise also works well for those with a shorter torso.
  • Fabric: A little bit of stretch can go a long way. I like jeans with about 1–2% elastane or spandex so they move with me, but not so much that they lose their shape.
  • Length: This is a big one. The most flattering straight-leg jeans either skim the top of your foot or hit just above the ankle. Anything longer tends to puddle, and anything too short can look awkward unless you’re wearing a cropped style on purpose.

If you’re petite, look for brands that offer shorter inseams so you don’t have to rely on tailoring. I often choose ankle-length styles because they work with a variety of shoes and are especially flattering with loafers or low boots.

What Shoes to Wear with Straight Leg Jeans

Straight leg jeans work with more shoes than you might expect. Here are a few that I wear regularly:

  • Loafers: A classic pairing that’s ideal for everyday wear.
  • Ankle boots: Choose a pair that fits closely around the ankle or tucks neatly under the hem.
  • Sneakers: Clean, low-profile styles look best.
  • Flats: Ballet flats and pointed-toe styles work beautifully and give a slightly dressier feel.
  • Heels: If your jeans are long enough, a block heel or kitten heel adds a little lift without sacrificing comfort.

The FRAME Le Sleek jeans are precisely what the name suggests… sleek, polished, and super chic. They have a slim, straight leg that gives a streamlined look while still feeling comfortable. The fabric has just the right amount of stretch to move with you while holding its shape, so they look just as good at the end of the day as they do when you put them on. With a clean design and a versatile medium-wash, I find them super easy to dress up or down!

Another great straight-leg option is these NYDJ Marilyn jeans. They come in four blue washes, and I’m wearing the Quinn. They come in regular, petite, and tall sizes 00-18. I’m wearing the 6 petite, and they’re plenty long with an inseam of 29 1/2″. I’ve been buying and wearing NYDJ for years and know them to be a reliable fit at a great price.

MORE STRAIGHT-LEG JEANS

Straight-leg jeans aren’t about chasing trends or trying to dress younger. They’re about choosing ease, balance, and a silhouette that works with your life instead of against it.

Once you find a pair that fits well, you’ll notice how many outfits suddenly come together without effort. A sweater, a blazer, a denim shirt, even sneakers on days when comfort wins. Good jeans make everything else feel simpler.

And honestly, anything that lets us sit, stand, walk, eat, and live without thinking about our pants deserves a little appreciation.

Do you lean toward a slimmer straight leg, or do you have another denim style you swear by now?

  1. I just got Eileen Fisher knit Jean, similar to rag bone Miramar, but dark wash. They come in barrel/lantern, wide leg and straight. Nordy has been out of my size in rag bone so went with EF. A little lower price point, AND wash/ dry beautifully. In case you or a reader is interested.

    1. I am interested! Thank you Linda.

I agree with the commenter who wanted to know the weight of the denim. I’d like to see denim styles in a lighter weight for summer. I can’t find that information when looking at most jeans online.

  3. You look great in all your jeans. I loved skinny jeans because I have a hard time with straight leg jeans being too baggy in the legs but I keep trying. I have a pair of Levi’s that fit well. Thanks for all your great work 🌸

    1. I have a pair of Levi’s I love too.

  4. I agree with your feelings on skinny leg jeans, I leave that style to my daughters age group. My favorite jean is a slim leg from LL Bean. A real jean material, always consistent, pick the rise, length and just a touch of spandex. Have you ever considered featuring this brand of clothing? Quality and trustworthy. I also love a bootcut style!! Thank you as always for bringing just the right post at just the right time.

    1. I only have their tote bag. I’ll have to see if there’s a store around to try some on. I don’t order and return clothes to share. It’s so wasteful because many retuned items end up in the landfills.

  5. I have a pair of Tommy Bahama Borocay jeans that are perfect. Had I known they were going to discontinue them, I would have purchased 20 pairs. Their replacement offering is 👎🏻 for me.

    1. Oh no! I didn’t know they’d been discontinued. I hate when that happens.

  6. My Levi’s classic straight, and 724 high rise straight are the most comfortable, forgiving jeans I’ve ever had. They’re a cotton poly spandex blend so light weight enough for summer although I wear them year round. Great price too as I just won’t pay two hundred dollars for jeans. My Jill’s tend to stretch out too much, and I’m just between 10-12 in most Talbots jeans. NYDJ have never worked for me but some Chicos do. I’ll stick with the old classic Levi’s! When you find something that works…

    1. I love a touch of poly in my jeans for just that reason. Softness!

  7. I wear straight leg jeans and they end up looking like wide leg because my hips are very wide and my legs are slimmer. I usually try slim leg to get a “straight leg” look. This is the best I can do with my figure. Plus, I wear jeans about 2 times a year here in Florida. Even our winters are too hot for jeans!

  8. As a +70 year old reader, I have thoroughly enjoyed your insights, relating to the same musings as yourself!
I believe it’s a combination of flattering and taste when it comes to jeans. I have a friend who states jeans are forbidden for any woman over sixty, no matter her size. Another over 80-year-old who wears sequins and bling jeans stating, “Why not?”
Personally, I try to use discretion: straight legs, medium to dark wash, waist high and right sized. Oh, don’t forget a little spandex in the material! 🙂

    1. Jeans may be forbidden for your friend but they’re a wonderful staple for many women at all sizes!
