What Clean Makeup Really Means for Mature Skin and the Brands That Get It Right

Clean beauty has come a long way from the days of weird-smelling powders and foundations that left you looking ghostly. These days, there are plenty of clean makeup options for mature skin that actually perform on real faces, with real texture, and everything that comes with it.

That said, not every “clean” formula plays nicely with aging skin. Some melt in beautifully. Others settle into fine lines and announce themselves like a houseguest who’s overstayed their welcome. I’ve tested more than a few, and the brands below stand out because they understand hydration, texture, and how makeup should feel on skin that’s seen a few seasons.

What “Clean” Really Means – and Why It Matters More Now

At its best, clean makeup avoids ingredients that can irritate or disrupt your skin. Think: no parabens, phthalates, synthetic fragrance, or silicones that sit on the surface and pill when you try to layer. As skin becomes more reactive with age, it makes sense to choose products that are gentler, especially if they offer skincare-level benefits.

If you’re dealing with dryness, sensitivity, or uneven texture, these brands are a great place to start.

Why I Love ILIA for my mature skin

ILIA clean makeup products for mature skin including skin tint, cream blush, mascara, and lip balm displayed on a stone surface.
SUPER SERUM SKIN TINT / RADIANT PRIMING SERUM / MULTI STICK BLUSH-LIP / LIMITLESS LASH MASCARA / LIP REVIVING BALM / OVERNIGHT LIP MASK

I’ve used more ILIA than any other clean brand, mostly because their products lean dewy, not matte. That’s key when your skin is feeling drier and a little less forgiving.

The Super Serum Skin Tint doesn’t cover everything, and it’s not meant to…but it does soften skintone and add a glow. Their mascara gives clean definition without flaking, and I love the Multi-Stick for quick color on cheeks and/or lips. It blends easily and never clings where it shouldn’t.

Here’s a more detailed post on the ILIA products I’ve tried.

My favorites from Merit

MERIT feels like it was made for real mornings. Everything’s easy, blendable, and designed to make your face look better, not busier.

The Complexion Stick works as both foundation and concealer. It doesn’t settle into lines, which makes it one of my favorite multi-use products. The Flush Balm gives a soft, flattering glow. I switch between a pale pink and a cool berry depending on my mood. Their lipstick is creamy without being slippery, and the mascara is gentle and no-fuss.

Here is my full review of the MERIT pieces I’ve used.

Jones Road

Jones Road Beauty Eyeshadows

Jones Road is one of the few brands that openly designs with older skin in mind, and it shows. The textures are emollient, easy to work with, and meant to enhance, not erase.

I’ve only tried the matte eyeshadows so far, and they’re lovely…blendable, soft, and forgiving on crepey lids.

I haven’t tried the foundation or Miracle Balm yet, but both are often talked about and are reported to be hydrating and sheer, best used with a light touch.

Tower 28

This line is known for playing well with sensitive skin, which is one reason it works so beautifully on mature skin that’s become more reactive.

Their SOS Spray is calming on my rosacea-prone cheeks, and I think of it as a skin reset, not a cover-up.

The MakeWaves mascara stays put, lifts lashes, and washes off with warm water. No rubbing, no drama.

Westman Atelier

Westman Atelier Baby Cheeks Blush

Westman Atelier was born from makeup artist Gucci Westman’s long career creating dewy, “second-skin” looks and her own experience with rosacea and sensitivity. The brand’s clean philosophy means every formula is safety-vetted, transparently listed, and free of phthalates, parabens, PEGs, mineral oils, and synthetics, with nourishing plant and skincare actives at effective levels rather than harsh chemicals.

I’m anxious to try their foundation stick because it’s often recommended for mature skin, as it offers coverage without heaviness and blends easily with fingers.

HIGHLIGHT STICK IN PETAL / BLUSH STICK IN DOU DOU / PRESSED SKINCARE POWDER

Their Baby Cheeks blush is creamy and goes on smoothly. I haven’t tried their contour sticks, but they’re very popular because they’re subtle, which tends to be more flattering as facial structure changes. I’m really enjoying their highlight stick because the color is a soft wash. Then, I dust everything with the pressed powder, which knocks down any shine. It comes in several shades, including sheer, but I like the soft pink because it brightens things up.

RMS Beauty

RMS Beauty has been around since before clean beauty was trendy. While it’s not in my everyday rotation, I know many women who swear by it.

The French Rose blush is a powder with glow, not glitter. Creams tend to work well on drier skin, and this one somehow stays luminous without being greasy.

Kosas

Kosas focuses heavily on complexion and brows, and I like that they combine skincare with makeup. Their Air Brow gives fluffy fullness without the crunchy feeling some gels leave behind.

Their complexion products haven’t made it into my regular routine yet, but I keep circling back. If you’ve tried them, let me know because I’m curious how they wear for a full day.

Caliray

Caliray is a newer brand that leans playful but delivers on performance. I haven’t tried it myself, but the tubing mascara is frequently recommended for mature eyes. It doesn’t smudge or flake, and it removes easily without tugging.

Saie

I haven’t tested Saie yet, but it’s high on my list. The entire line is glow-focused, which can be a blessing when your skin starts looking dull. Their cream blush is supposed to blend effortlessly, and I’ve heard great things about the Super Gel for layering under or mixing into foundation.

With so many smart, skin-friendly options available now, choosing clean makeup isn’t about being trendy, it’s about being kind to your skin.

At this stage, I care less about chasing perfection and more about how my face feels by 3 p.m. If a product can calm, hydrate, and enhance without irritation or extra effort, it’s worth keeping around. And frankly, when you find clean formulas that work with mature skin rather than fight it, getting ready becomes a lot more pleasant.

Have you tried any of these brands or found a favorite to share? I’d love to hear what’s working for you lately.

I appreciate addressing the topic of clean makeup on mature skin, as the amount of products to sort out is overwhelming at the stores.

Some input for women who have had issues with various products, as I had. I went to an expert contact dermatologist some years ago who diagnosed me with an allergy to Propylene Glycol (PPG). Apparently at least 5% of the population (which is a lot) are allergic to it: & likely more who aren’t diagnosed. It appears in most all cosmetics ( even “clean” products), soaps, shampoos, detergents, and some foods. If you have skin reactions you might try eliminating it for a while.

  2. Thanks for this info.. I love Jones Road.. The balm is amazing, light and just melts into my skin, with a glow. The Saie foundation is wonderful, good coverage, but light. I also like to use the Starglow illumination, helps to ‘lift’ my checkbones….I tend to use tinted moisturizers over actual foundation….I do like the Merit blushes…..

  3. Just wondering if you have tried or reviewed the Laura Geller cosmetics. That line is for mature skin. I haven’t tried it but I’m curious.

    1. I did try is many years ago but the foundation was too warm for my complexion. It may have changed now.

  4. Does the Kosas eyebrow item tame unruly spiky hairs ?
Love reading all your help and information !

    1. It works on my “cat whisker” eyebrow hairs but they are not curly

      1. Thank you !!! mine are poker straight … like my hair …😩

  5. Ilia and Merit are on my shelf. I started and like No Make Up Make Up to cover lightly my few pale brown spots on my cheeks. Otherwise, I don’t wear a foundation or mascara anymore. The light cream blush, tinted lip moisturizer and eyebrow pencil in pale taupe are it. I like the Merit blush stick in Cheeky and my Ilia is a warmer tone for summer skin. Even with a hat I do seem to get a little more color in the summer.

  6. I meant to add….there have been a few times that I applied too much, and a few times that I looked kinda greasy even after letting it settle. I used a blotting tissue, pressed very lightly in a few spots. Worked great.

  7. Jennifer, I’ve been using Saie slip tint for several years and I really like it. SPF 35, light coverage, not a greasy look and pump tube keeps it fresh. A little goes a long way. I don’t ever use a full pump…I use a little at a time and add more. I found that it does look too Dewey when first applied so I let it set a few minutes. I add more if needed Or I add more later in the day. I also use their brush to blend/smooth. What I don’t like is…it wears off my nose quickly. Allergies and Kleenex do that! 🫤 I found Laura mercier powder works and mimics the radiance? Glow? Her luminous pressed powder in translucent is great. I just got the Saie pressed baking powder but haven’t tried it yet. Hope this helps.

    Always love your posts !

    1. Nose blowing is a real challenge for my coverage this time of year too.

  8. It’s funny, but I think of makeup as the opposite of “clean.” Freshly washed and all goo removed is my definition. The cosmetics industry is expert at changing the vocabulary for us.

Thank you for today’s and every days’ comments.
For your Canadian readers, I would like to recommend Riversol products for sensitive skin. Dr Riversol is a Vancouver dermatologist who developed these treatments for his patients. They are reasonably priced with minimal packaging. There is no make up in his line, but excellent serums and creams for skin problems.
Some pharmacies here sell them, e.g. Pharmasave, but they are easily and quickly obtained on line.

  10. Thank you for your wonderful recommendations. I enjoy your emails a lot.

As someone who shares both very sensitive/allergy prone skin and achy feet (plantar fasciitis), I have some recommendations.

In addition to Vionic and Fit Flop, which you have mentioned, I have had luck with Orthofeet – especially the sneakers.

For skincare, I use La Roche Posay and for makeup, a combination of Jane Iredale, Clinique and Thrive.

Everyone is different but maybe you will find something that works for you.

  11. Hi Jennifer! I love these guides you have put together lately. This one strikes me in particular in that I threw out all of my make up awhile ago due to dealing with a post-surgery infection, picked up in the operating room at Stanford of all places. I’ve used Paula’s Choice products for years, and am pretty happy with their skin care routine overall, but have been wondering about a change – you’ve given me a lot to think about. I have started using a tinted moisturizer from PUR which I really love (4-in-1 Tinted Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 20). It is just the right amount of coverage to look natural and smooth things out. I also have tried the Ilia mascara you recommended awhile ago – it is fantastic!

    1. Ouch, so sorry to hear about your infection! I have to replace my makeup often because of my ocular rosacea and irritation. Plus makeup without preservatives needs to be replaced faster than I can use it up. I’ll check out their concealer PUR.That’s new to me.

  12. I use a tubing mascara and love it.

  13. Thanks for the suggestions! I’ve recently tried the Ilia Super Serum Skin Tint which has been recommended by you and others for mature skin. Because it has an SPF of 40 and my skin tends to be a bit drier in the winter (otherwise combo) I thought it would be a good all-in-one option for the winter months. I’ve tried it for a few weeks now and although it gives good coverage, for my skin, it is way to “glowy” and
tends to just sit on my skin rather than settle in. I had a similiar experience with the Merit foundation/concealer stick. However I love their Flush balm. Will try the Tower mascara and the Saie liquid blush. Lately I’ve been liking liquid blushes. I just have to be careful to not put too much on!

  14. I love the Merit products. My daughter tried mine and now uses it. I have heard about Ilia products will have to try it. Thanks for the mention of a clean tubing mascara. I like a tubing mascara so much easier to remove.

  15. Melissa Larsen says:

Im loving the look and simplicity of Merit. The 5 minute face works for me everyday.

  16. I LOVE Jones Road makeup, and so does my 20-something daughter. That says a lot to me. The tinted moisturizer is a perfect light foundation and the color correcting pencil was a revelation- it really makes those dark areas disappear and lightens up your whole look. Miracle Balm works in so many ways- from base to blush to lips, even styling my hair sometimes. They don’t have many brick and mortar stores, but if you can, go to one and get a makeup lesson. I did and it was very educational.

    1. Thanks for sharing your experience. I always love to read recommendations before I try something new.

  17. I have been using the Towers mascara . I find it does not irritate my sensitive eyes. The Ilia foundation serum is lovely, no dry, pasty look. I would like to try some of these other brands as well. Merit has a pretty blush that I have bought .

Do you know of an eyeliner that stays on, yet ,does not irritate eyes? I have an eyelid condition. I really need an eyeliner just for the top lid, as my eyelashes are so thin. I have white, silver hair and I need some eye definition.

    1. I’ve used this Stilla liner in Alloy for as long as I can remember. It’s a soft pale gray and the felt tip makes it so easy to apply and lasts all day.

  18. Good morning Jennifer. First let me say that I look forward to reading your blog every day and have appreciated the vast majority of your posts. I am wondering though that you didn’t include No Makeup makeup in today’s post.

    Thanks for what you do,
    Deb

    1. No reason other than I’ve only tried two of their products and the post was getting ridiculously long! I need a part two.

  19. I started using Merit products after reading about it on your blog. I use the full line now and really like how it works for my dry skin! The new eye shadows they came out with this year are great, The Sheens go on lightly without looking all sparkly and settling into lines, love it! If you order from their website, they have some great offers! I can’t wait to see what they will have new for this year!

    1. I was just wondering about those ones with sheen. I’m not big on sparkle. I’ll have to try one.

      1. I was sent one before they were offered or I would never have tried them (left the 70’s behind!). They might look sparkly in the container but have a soft look to it, good for wearing lightly over another color or by itself.

  20. Look at those gorgeous eyes! I love Merit (thanks to you!) To your list I’d add the stick highlighter. Swipe and go! I love the lipstick formula, but it’s down to one color that looks good on my winter self, and they discontinued my favorite. (Lip collex is very 90s brown.) The flush balms are an outstanding product (try applying with the amazing blending brush). I had to buy two of the blending brushes, one for foundation and one for blush. They are that good. Foundation stick is good too, though for me it doesn’t replace concealer. I can get behind the “Five Minute Face” (see video on their site. For someone whose makeup skills were honed in the 80s, I’ve come a long way to less is more as I’ve aged…but always a bold lip! Go play with a Merit (and Ilia, love the tinted moisturizer in summer, it’s glowy and it has high SPF) then order through Jennifer’s links! 😀

    1. I have two of their brushes too! I love using my fingers to apply cream blush but brushes allow me to “stipple” and blend two colors to get a softer look. I feel like an artist some mornings. 🤣 I’ll check out their concealer. I wore a Clinique one for many years and was devastated when they discontinued my color. It’s so frustrating. Playing with makeup is so fun to me. Happy Friday Shari!
