Color Psychology: Wearing Hues That Boost Your Mood
Have you ever noticed how wearing a particular color can instantly uplift your spirits or instill a sense of calm? They can just as easily bring your energy down and make you feel melancholy. Each color has an inherent energy, and by understanding the psychology behind colors, we can curate wardrobes that not only flatter our appearance but also enhance our emotional well-being. Let’s explore how embracing certain shades can be a delightful form of self-care, adding vibrancy and positivity to our daily lives.

Just because a color flatters you doesn’t mean you’ll feel great wearing it. We all have different comfort levels with color, and it’s important to honor that. Soft pastels may complement my complexion, but many make me feel invisible. Instead, I’m naturally drawn to neutrals, not just because they’re easy to wear, but because I love their soft, quiet energy. The beauty of personal style is that it’s just that…personal. Knowing which colors look good on you is helpful, but understanding how they make you feel is just as important.
The Science Behind Color Psychology in Fashion
Color psychology isn’t just a theory—it’s backed by science. Studies show that colors can stimulate emotions, trigger memories, and even influence decision-making. There’s a reason why fast-food chains favor red (it creates urgency) and hospitals lean towards blue (it’s calming). The same applies to our wardrobes.

Some mornings, I find myself instinctively reaching for certain colors. If I wake up feeling sluggish, I might gravitate toward something brighter and energizing. On a stressful day, I’m drawn to soft, calming shades. Whether we realize it or not, we dress to enhance or counterbalance our emotions.

What Different Colors Say About Your Mood
Red
Mood Boost: Confidence, Energy, Strength

There’s a reason red is used for stop signs—it grabs your attention. It’s bold, fiery, and full of energy. Whenever I see someone wearing red, they instantly seem more confident, like they’re ready to take on the day. It’s the kind of color that makes you stand a little taller and walk with purpose. If you’re looking for a quick confidence boost, try adding a shade of red to your wardrobe. I’ve been on the hunt for the “right” red flats for my wardrobe because I love the pop they add to a neutral outfit.
Blue
Mood Boost: Tranquility, Stability, Trust

There’s something about blue that feels instantly soothing, which may be why I find myself reaching for it more often these days. Maybe it’s because it reminds us of clear skies and ocean waves. I’ve always loved wearing navy when I want to feel polished and put-together without trying too hard. It’s a color that exudes trust and stability—perfect for days when you need a little extra composure.
Yellow
Mood Boost: Happiness, Optimism, Creativity

Yellow is like wearing a ray of sunshine, and soft banana yellow is very popular this spring. It’s warm, cheerful, and impossible to ignore. Yellow is the color of optimism, and sometimes, just looking at it is enough to brighten the mood.
Green
Mood Boost: Renewal, Growth, Calmness

Green is deeply connected to nature, which might explain why it feels so grounding. There’s a freshness to green that makes everything seem more alive. I always find myself drawn to it when I need a reset. My favorite shades of green are cool-toned, like these Adidas sneakers. Since green encourages feelings of calm, I may try incorporating more touches of it into my wardrobe.
Pink
Mood Boost: Love, Femininity, Warmth

Pink has an undeniable softness to it. It’s warm, romantic, and has a way of making people feel at ease. I find that when I wear pink, people react differently because it’s inviting and friendly. Blush tones feel especially elegant, while brighter pinks add a playful, confident energy.
Purple
Mood Boost: Inspiration, Spirituality, Royalty

Purple has long been associated with royalty, wisdom, and creativity. It’s a blend of the energy of red and the calmness of blue, which makes it feel both inspiring and balanced. It’s a color that carries a bit of mystery, and I love that about it. I don’t wear purple often, but when I do, I usually lean toward a lighter shade like lilac or lavender.
Orange
Mood Boost: Enthusiasm, Warmth, Social Confidence

Orange is a color that radiates enthusiasm. It’s warm, bold, and full of life. I think of it as a social color—one that makes you feel more open and engaged. It’s the kind of color that makes people smile, even if you’re just passing them on the street.
Neutrals
Mood Boost: Comfort, Simplicity, Stability

Not everyone loves bold colors, and that’s okay. Neutrals—white, beige, gray—bring their own kind of energy. White feels fresh and crisp, beige is warm and inviting, and gray offers understated elegance. There are days when I crave the simplicity of neutrals, and those are the days I feel most calm and collected.
Using Color Psychology in Your Daily Wardrobe
Once you start paying attention to how colors make you feel, dressing with intention becomes second nature. Some days, you might want to amplify your current mood, while other days, you’ll want to counteract it. Feeling drained? Try red. Need to relax? Blue is your best bet.
Our wardrobes are more powerful than we give them credit for. The right color can change how we carry ourselves, how we interact with others, and even how we experience the day. So, the next time you open your closet, take a moment to ask yourself…how do I want to feel today? You might be surprised at what a little color can do.

Personal Color Analysis
Personal color analysis has seen a huge resurgence lately, and many women are fascinated by the idea of discovering their best colors. I encourage you to explore it as a tool to broaden how you wear and think about color, but don’t let it become limiting. Color typing is a tool, not a rule. I see too many women refuse to wear a color, simply because it’s not in their palette. If there’s a color you love, wear it with confidence, regardless of whether it’s on your color palette or not. Style should always bring you joy, not limit it.
What colors make you feel the happiest?

I never shy away from color, but I try to keep it restrained. When I was a child, ask my favorite color and I said “red.” After that it would be yellow, green, blue and orange, in that order. From my earliest memory, I disliked purple. Some shades of it I actively loathe. I don’t know why that is. Curious. I like most pastels, and I do like lavender. I’m getting old enough now that I can just accept my color tastes and get on with life. LOL
That’s a great place to be, Kay
Jennifer I love you in your blue gauze outfit, the pink sweater and the blue and yellow bumblebees sweater. You are great at knowing what works with your coloring and what doesn’t. My color choices are blue from haze pale blue to navy. Blue fortunately looks very good on my coloring which is very similar to yours. I also love pale grey, soft white, a cool beige which is hard to find and silver jewelry. I have two pink tops and one pale lavender one. Blue is king in my closet and it makes me happy.
Soft beige is one of my favorites and I am always on the lookout for it. Blue makes me happy too 🙂
I love red and I’ve been wearing orange too. Recently, I started being attracted to green, whereas before I had nothing in greens in my closet. I’m also buying lots of pretty blues. I never wear pastels and pinks seem too sweet to me.
I’ve not had my colour analysis done but know pastels wash me out, autumn colours don’t suit me, and greys are sad on me.
Hi Jennifer,
I’m new to your blog and find your content fun and helpful. Thank you.
Many, many years ago, I splurged on a color analysis to discover I am a “winter”. Now they label my coloring as “cool”. I gravitate to red especially in tops and accessories. A favorite piece is a red cape I bought in Ireland when everyone else was purchasing the typical Irish beige sweater.
I notice you wear petites in some of your choices. I’m short waisted but you dont’ look so. Any advice to share concerning petites?
Happy to learn from your lovely style,
Diney on Mercer Island
Welcome Diane, I’m so happy you’ve joined us. I am long waisted with long arms so many petite tops don’t work for me. Trial and error is best to find the brands that work for your shape. In general for a short torso, you will do better with mid rise pants and and can wear longer tops to help balance your legs
My favorite color to wear is a clear medium aqua and it doesn’t hurt that I always get compliments when I wear it. It’s not an easy color to find in stores but whenever I find something in that color that fits my lifestyle – I buy it!
This was a fun post to read. Thank you!
Compliments are always a positive!
A couple of years ago I did an experiment. I bought two shirts and two scarves. One had to be in my palette/capsule the other spark joy. Guess which ones I wore the most?
I’m all over anything described as sun washed, dusty or faded. And silky fabrics. So soft and calming.
Right now, I’m happiest with a medium saturated sky blue color I never thought I’d wear because my color analysts said “stick with really bright jewel colors”. But I tried on an evening gown last week and I loved the way I looked and felt. So I went back out to see if I could find it in a shirt. I found one, tried it on and felt the same way. Of course the shirt went home with me.
That’s the feeling to go for!
I think you looked great in the pink sweater! I have never had a color analysis but I love pink and red and black and white. I think grey looks good with silver hair. I have green eyes but sometimes it’s hard to find the right green. I’m with you on the color of the green sneakers. That’s a good green. Thanks for the all the fun info 🌸
I love green eyes! So pretty
I have a friend who has green eyes. Hers tend to change depending on the color she is wearing. If teal or olive, they look that color, emerald green, they look darker. It’s really cool that she had chameleon eyes!
Jennifer, you look great in colors! I love to dress colorfully, and pink is my signature hue. It just makes me happy, feels feminine and complements my skin tone. My advice is wear what you love…you only go around once in this life!!
I could not agree more!
I recently used House of Colour to analyze my colors. For me this analogy says it all. Prior to the analysis I felt even with a map & GPS I could not find my destination because I didn’t have the address. Stepping into my closet with my color fan was like having cataract surgery. Immediately I could see why I wasn’t reaching for items I loved when I purchased them. (I’m having a ball re-dyeing these pieces! Feel like I have a new wardrobe and everything goes together.)
That’s exciting!
The purple sweater with a scarf is definitely your color! They seem to pop and brighten your skin tone, yet are not overbearing bearing. Wear more of this shade- looks stunning on you!!
Great information with lots of examples of how color affects us. Thanks!
Where did you get that beautiful green linen dress? It is spectacular.
It is from J. Jill several summers ago
That green dress is spectacular on you! Hope you feel comfortable wearing it. Also, the blue gauze blouse and pants are wonderful. Those are my favorite looks of the day.
I loved that green dress until it came out of the laundry with permanent stains. It’s was one of the very few colors I had fun with.
I have that green J.JIll linen dress you wore in the opening photo…It is absolutely my favorite. I wish they would bring it back in more colors!
I loved that dress too. One of their best!
Wonderful post. I mostly wear navy, has become a uniform of sorts. I look good in pink, however, I’m not a pink person. And this post has given me pause, at work we have to wear a uniform and it’s a grey shirt, I detest grey on me, has never suited me. I was outnumbered when I requested blue shirts. Wonder if that’s why I feel uninspired while at work, haha.
It sure could be! Certain grays can feel very drab if they’re not flattering.
For me the colors that make me feel the best are those in my seasonal palette. They are fine tuned versions of colors I have always worn and loved. It works for me and doesn’t feel limiting, though I have a few colors outside of my palette that I wear and love. They happen to be from the adjacent palette which makes sense to me. (I’m dark winter and I love bright red toned orange and blue toned olive green from the dark autumn palette.) Color is definitely a mood booster for me, whether clothes, plants, decor, art. I think everyone should wear what they want what makes them happy, whatever that is! If color theory doesn’t work for you don’t do it! We’ve lived too long on this earth to do anything else!
I agree Shari. You’re fortunate to love your palette. Some women are very unhappy being limited by ANY rules so best to think of them as tools to use or discard.
Shari well said. The knowledge is liberating.
Great post, Jennifer! My favourite colour is green, and, you will not find a stitch of clothing in my wardrobe that is purple. Just wondering, where did you find that adorable blue striped sweater with the little bumble bees? It’s sooooo cute!
It was from Talbots many years ago. It sure had happy vibes. It’s interesting but light versions of purple are supposed to be great for me but I only have one thing in that color.
