Dressing Room Try-on at Nordstrom

Today’s title is proof positive you can teach an old dog new tricks. Dressing Room Diary is being retired for dressing room try-on. The SEO (search engine optimization) of ‘Diary’ is zilch, but ‘try-on’ tells the whole story. I know that try-on haul has huge SEO, but the term doesn’t sit well with me, so I’m just updating it to try-on.

A try-on is just what it sounds like. I go into a store and style their latest collection so readers can see what’s new and get some ideas for how they could wear it. I’m not shopping for myself and seldom buy clothes because I prefer to shop online. My hair gets pretty trashed, and I’m often barefoot. For size reference, I’m 5’4″, which puts me on the cusp of petite. I have wide shoulders and straight hips with no obvious curves.

I’ve got a few new fall fashion arrivals from Nordstrom today. I’m also sharing a few things from the Nsale that are still in stock or have been restocked. The sale ends on Sunday, so if there’s something you had your eye on, get it now before the prices go up.

EILEEN FISHER ORGANIC COTTON V-NECK SWEATER size XS / STAND COLLAR JACKET size S / EILEEN FISHER ANKLE LANTERN CARGO PANTS size XS

I spotted this azalea color online and knew I needed to try it on. It’s a bright, happy, saturated pink that just pops! Here it is in the v-neck cotton sweater and the stand collar jacket. I’m wearing an XS in the sweater, which is a smidge to snug, so it runs true to size. The cotton is very soft and smooth. It also comes in a gorgeous taupe, ecru, and black.

This lightweight jacket has a drawstring hood you can stow away in the collar. It will give lots of protection from the elements. It also comes in taupe, which they call reed. These pants are the fabulous washable crepe fabric I love so much. They have a slight lantern leg shape with cargo pockets and are an easy pull-on style with front slash pockets. I usually wear a small in their pants, so these XS are a bit snug, which tells me they run true to size.

VINCE COTTON BLEND SWEATER DRESS size M

This cotton blend sweater dress is a great transitional piece for summer to fall. The color is called salted glass, which is yummy and soft. I love the elbow-length sleeves, spread collar, and henley vibes. Because of the all-over ribbing, the sleeve bottom and hemline have a feminine, scalloped appearance.

CASLON ROLL TAB KNIT SHIRT size M / EILEEN FISHER COTTON TAPERED PANTS size XS

This roll-tab knit shirt comes in a rainbow of colors at a great price. I’m wearing the Celtic green, which really pops against the black. It’s a soft cotton blend that feels great against your skin. The slight shirtail hem looks great tucked or untucked. I’m wearing it with these tapered pants from Eileen Fisher, which are 100% organic cotton with a zip front and elastic in the waistband. It’s a medium-weight cotton that will work now and into fall. They also come in a gorgeous taupe shade. These XS are a bit snug, so I know they run true to size.

RAILS COTTON TANK size S / RAILS COTTON MILITARY JACKET size S / FARM RIO DENIM MIDI SKIRT size 28

This denim skirt by Farm Rio has flattering front seams and a nice length slit which makes it easy to walk in. The classic blue wash has no fading or distressing, which gives it a nice polished look. BTW- FARM Rio will plant one tree for every purchase of its product as a partner of the global reforestation nonprofit One Tree Planted.

I’m wearing it with a lightweight, organic cotton jacket and a simple cotton tank from Rails. The jacket has a stand collar and epaulets. I’m not sure why they call it a military jacket because it resembles a long bomber to me.

CASLON ROLL TAB KNIT SHIRT size M / NYDJ BRIGITTE WIDE LEG CROP size 8

Here’s the same roll-tab knit shirt, this time in blue cornflower. I’m wearing it with these NYDJ wide-leg crops, which come in three shades. I’m wearing the feather, which is a soft white. The crops are labeled capri, which isn’t technically true because they’re crops. These have a frayed hem and plenty of stretch which makes them very comfy. Because the pants are cropped, the shirt is a better proportion, either tucked or tied at the waist. It more closely approaches a 1/3-2/3 ratio. See also- The Rule of Thirds.

NYDJ BRIGITTE WIDE LEG CROP size 8 / NYDJ PINTUCK BLOUSE IN “COPPER CAT” size S

Here are the same crops, this time in the soft green shade. I’m wearing them with NYJD pintuck blouse which comes in tons of color and prints. This one is called copper cat which picks up a bit of the green color. The combo of the soft colors is very restful and pretty. Because this crepe fabric is so lightweight, you could easily tuck it in. If wearing with full-length pants, the high-low hem looks nice untucked.

VINCE CABLED WOOL/CASHMERE SWEATER size S / WIT & WISDOM JEANS size 8

This off-white cable sweater is part of the anniversary sale and is still pretty well-stocked. It’s a super soft wool/cashmere blend with a cropped length that will work so well with wide-leg pants or jeans. These straight-leg jeans are also part of the sale, come in three colors, and are still stocked in several sizes.

Ooo l love the Azalea jacket so much Jennifer and it looks so wonderful on you! Might have to go in and try it on. Bravo Eileen Fisher for thinking of petite women! Happy weekend xo

    1. Their size inclusivity is an important reason I love to support them. Happy Friday!

  2. Love how you tie the shirts. I’m short waisted and most shirts are too long but I can wear them tied. Also love the cable knit sweater. They never go out of style.

I hope you took the sweater dress home as it looks FABULOUS on you! I love the fluted hem and the length!

  4. I am wondering if you might feature some dresses for fall and winter that are not midi length. As I am 5’2″, midi length is awkward for me and I wouldn’t wear it. Are there knee-length dresses out there that are nice, for work or for casual wear? Thank you, Jennifer. Love your blog.

    1. I hope to find some and will certainly share them when I do. Midi has been trending for a few years but Talbots always carries some knee length options.

      1. Oh. I hope so, too! I love that you will start featuring fall looks as we have a trip in September to NY and I like to be in fall colors by then.

      2. That’s a gorgeous time to visit NY

  5. You look beautiful all the time, but particularly in the azalea sweater. Very flattering.
I am a big EF fan. If the brand ever stops, I may go naked. My gripe is their sizing-it’s such a guessing game. I’ve noticed lately that the brand’s pants are running closer to TTS, so have learned not to size down in this item. My fall purchase was the wide leg cargo pants, which are a great denim alternative. Love them.

    1. Thanks, Susan. I am seriously thinking about that Azalea color. I’m noticing the same with the pants but I’m also eating out too much so that could be an issue 🤣 I’m heading over to EF store so I’ll check out those wide legs.

  6. Great post! The EF looks so much better on you than in their photos. I passed on the cargo pants but after seeing them on you I’m having second thoughts! I just ordered a shirt in that Azalea color! It’s intense but perfect for my dark winter self!

    1. Perfect for your stiking coloring, Shari. You’ll love it!

Great try-on. Love and will copy several of these outfits. The Vince ribbed sweater dress. Do you think it will stretch? I have had other longer sweater dresses that slowly creep toward the floor during the work day, I really dislike that. And thanks for defining SEO, I enjoy these little glimpses into the back room of blogging.

    1. The fabric has 3% spandex so I don’t expect it will stretch without springing back. Vince fabrics are pretty terrific quality.

  8. Absolutely loved the Azalea combo outfits, what a colour. It looks fab with my favourite shape black trousers. I think a black patent brogue shoe would look really classy. Although I think blue is your colour the Azalea
    Suites you very much indeed.
    Best wishes , Pamela UK

    1. Patent shoes would be a smashing juxtaposition with the matte crepe pants! What a fun idea, Pamela
I am a big fan of blue everything. xo
