How to Style Silver Sneakers (From Someone Who Almost Skipped the Trend)

I’ll admit it, silver sneakers were not love at first sight. My first thought was that they looked a bit too attention-seeking, which is rich coming from a woman who owns plenty of statement jewelry. But the more I saw them styled with clean, simple outfits, the more they started to make sense. Now I wear mine constantly, and that’s usually how I know something has moved from trend to real life.

Why Silver Sneakers Work So Well After 50

This is the part that surprised me the most. I assumed silver sneakers might feel too trendy, but they actually do the opposite. They add just enough brightness to an outfit without introducing a bold color.

They also act like a neutral. You can wear them with black, navy, white, denim, or soft tones, and they don’t compete with anything. If you tend to wear simple outfits, they give you a way to update your look without adding anything complicated.

The Best Silver Sneakers That Are Actually Comfortable

These M.GEMI silver sneakers look polished and are amazingly comfortable! They’re made with Italian metallic calf leather and leather lining, with an EVA rubber sole that keeps them lightweight and easy to walk in. I love that their removable perforated footbed allowed me to swap in my orthotic, which only improved their comfort. All full-priced M.Gemi shoes are 25% off with the code OURTREAT, so I may order these lattice sneakers in black for the summer.

Sam Edelman Poppy Sneakers

This slim, low-profile sneaker has a soft metallic finish and a classic shape. The mini-sawtooth tread elevates the look, and the raw-edge leather keeps them soft and pliable.

Vionic Winny Perf Sneaker

This silver sneaker has the built-in arch support that Vionic is famous for, plus the popular perforated leather, which makes it look modern. The perforations also reduce the shine a bit, making it more subtle.

Veja Volley O.T. Sneaker

This Veja sneaker has a vintage court shoe vibe, but the details keep it from feeling ordinary. The paneled design, soft suede overlays, and subtle metallic accents give it a little more character than a plain white sneaker. The broguing and serrated trim near the laces add polish, so it feels casual but still pulled together.

These silver New Balance 327 sneakers have been worn way more than I ever expected. They’re supportive with a wide toe box and feel very stable on my feet. I also have this sneaker in beige and white…but I love this metalic more.

Vionic City Walk Platform Sneaker

This Vionic City Walk Platform Sneaker has a cushioned EVA footbed with arch support and a cushioned, low-profile platform. The metallic finish is slightly shinier and has a crinkled texture, giving it a little more dimension.

Adidas x C.P. Company Italia 70s Shoe

This silver Adidas Italia Spezial was created with C.P. Company for its 50th anniversary, and it has that great retro sport styling I always love. The contrast overlays and crepe-rubber toe cap give it a cool old-school feel.

Veja Campo Sneaker

This is the classic Veja design that so many people love. It has a structured shape that holds up well, and the metallic detail is subtle enough to act like a neutral. A reliable option if you prefer something timeless with a slight update.

Adidas Gazelle Sneaker

With its silver finish and red stripes, this Adidas Gazelle sneaker has that great old-school court feel without looking costume-y. The low profile keeps it sleek, and the cushioned insole makes it comfortable enough for real life.

Paul Green Bixby Platform Sneaker

These Paul Green Mineral Metallic Platform Sneaker has been a major player in my shoe wardrobe for over 8 years. They’re a mix between silver and gold that seems to go with everything. They’re so incredibly comfortable, I often wear them to travel. They have a simple design with cushioned platform which gives me a subtle height boost and are easy on the feet.

Are Silver Sneakers Worth It? My Honest Take

I didn’t expect to like them as much as I do. What surprised me most is that they don’t require any outfit rethinking. They just work with what I already own…the navy, the black, the white jeans, the denim. They give a simple outfit a little lift without asking anything complicated in return.

FAQs About Silver Sneakers

Do silver sneakers work year-round or just in spring and summer?

Year-round, and I was surprised by this too. In warmer months they’re easy with lighter fabrics and softer colors. Come fall, they hold their own with black, navy, and gray just as well. The silver actually reads as contrast rather than mismatch.

What colors don’t work as well with silver sneakers?

Very warm tones can be tricky. Deep orange or mustard sometimes fights with the cool undertone in silver. Stick to neutrals and cooler shades and you won’t have to think about it.

Are silver sneakers too flashy for everyday wear?

Only if you style them that way. With a simple outfit, they read more like a neutral with some personality than anything bold or look-at-me.

Can you wear silver sneakers in place of white sneakers?

In most cases, yes. They do the same job but with a little more interest. If your white sneakers are starting to feel a bit expected, silver is an easy swap that doesn’t change how you dress.

Have you tried metallic sneakers, and silver in particular? I’d love to hear how you style yours.

  1. I just returned from a visit to Vegas, Seattle and Chicago. I saw silver sneakers everywhere!! Fun and stylish. I have a pair from several years ago that is now back in my rotation.

    1. They are everywhere and so fun

  2. My silver shoes are from Skechers. They are kind of a heathered silver and very comfortable. They are a few years old but I think they are the Go Walk Joy version. I also have silver sandals from Easy Spirit.

  3. I wear mostly navy, blue, lavenders and purples, aqua and turquoise, and pinks so silver sneakers would go quite well with those colors. But, my jewelry is mostly gold. Does that clash with silver sneakers?

    1. Mixing metals is very popular these days and your jewelry is a long way from your shoes so I wouldn’t worry about it.

  4. Elaine @ Following Augustine says:

Hmm… I might have to look for a pair! I had rose gold sneakers a few years ago that I absolutely loved. I wore them until they practically fell apart. My white leather sneakers with a bit of gold embellishment on them are now past their best, so something new is probably called for, don’t you think?

    1. I do Elaine. They sure add a pep to your step 🙂

  5. I had the same doubts, and then while browsing eBay last month I found a cute pair from Madden Girl at a price I couldn’t resist. I never got into sneakers as fashion until this recent trend for the sleek retro ones, and now I have a pair of suede Adidas in pale green suede, another in chocolate brown, and the silver, and I’m wearing them all more than I’d ever have expected. I like your styling ideas a lot!

    1. I’ve fully embraced the retro sneaker trend and my feet are happy campers.

  6. I love all these silver sneakers. I have a pair of white Adidas sneakers with silver stripes but now I think I would really like an all silver pair.

  7. Judy Avrick says:

    Hi Jennifer
I love the idea of perforated sneakers for the summer, but what do you do if you like to wear socks with sneakers? Will it look weird and/or defeat the purpose?

    1. If they’re lightweight cotton socks they should be fine.

  8. I bought gold sneakers a few years ago when they were trending. I love them with ecru or light wash jeans. I suppose they are “out” now that silver is on trend.

    1. Nope! There are lots of gold sneakers around so enjoy yours.

  9. I have rose gold Birkenstocks and the finish got so scratched up. I got everything from Angelus leather paints and painted them gold and they’re beautiful. The finish is perfect at the end of one summer. I feel I’m too pale for silver, but the points you make are thought provoking.

  10. I love my silver sneakers too! Mine are Ecco, and I have an identical pair in a light gold tone that fills in that other half of the color spectrum for warmer tones. But really are great for traveling. I’ll be sad when they wear out, as I don’t think the same ones are being made any longer.

  11. I prefer silver over white. I agree it goes with lots. It’s nice to travel with. Gold to me screams too much unless it’s a soft gold.

  12. Good Morning Jennifer, you don’t know how much I appreciate this article. I bought Vionic silver sneakers last Fall and am just not reaching for them as much as I’d like. Because I feel like they’re too flashy. I really like how you’ve styled them with the Quince hoodie, white blouse and jeans. “clean simple outfits” is my new mantra for those shoes.

  13. Leslie Lord says:

    I love those silver sneakers!!!
Am going to see what’s available locally…I bought a silver Baggu foldable tote for my purse and these would be a great spring and summer addition.

    1. I hope you find some they’re very fun.

  14. Great timing Jennifer! I bought silver sneakers a couple years ago but haven’t actually worn them much. I’ve been hesitant to pull them out if the closet (too shiny? Screaming for attention??). But no more. They’re coming out today to wear with white jeans and a light green sweater. Maybe some silver jewelry. I like your outfits a lot, and they give me ideas to pull from my closet. Thanks!!

    1. Have fun with them!

  15. I do have silver sneakers but every time I put them on I take them off. Perhaps I find them too flashy. I will give them another try with your suggestions and see how it goes.

    1. Treat them like a neutral

  16. What about gold sneakers?

    1. There are lots of gold sneakers around too. The same works with all metallics.

  17. H*ll yes!!! As a winter, I have been team silver sneakers since they have been available (many years) and team silver shoes my whole life. Silver has long been one of my neutrals because they go with a cool toned wardrobe. They importantly go with navy, no matching needed. They look amazing with pure white. And these are the base colors of my summer wardrobe. I have the NB 327 and the Ecco Soft 7 (look like the M Gemi but not comfy enough for travel). I’m trying to incorporate taupe and dark brown shoes, but I always come back to silver. My style is not flashy at all, though I do wear my jewel tones, and simple silver shoes are never too much.

    1. I agree Shari! They’re just perfect with so many colors.

  18. I snagged the Vionic Uptown loafer in silver at Nordstrom Rack, and couldn’t be happier! They are comfortable and are so easy to style, as you point out. So far, I am wearing them with denim or with black ankle length pants, and simple outfits. I’m thinking they may make the cut for my next trip, a river cruise.

    1. I am on year three with my silver Vionic platform loafer. I love this shoe and wear year round. Will buy again when it starts to show sign of wear.

  19. Uhg .. no editing function! I mean to write ‘it’s the one shoe that fits incredibly comfortably and I can walk for miles in them’

  20. Oh boy.. I can’t believe there is a silver version of the Veja campo. It’s the one shoe that fits instead comfortably six I can walk miles in. I am so incredibly tempted, lol. But, to the greater point of a silver shoe, I have worn silver loafers, ballet flats, and flip flops since my early 30s! I wear a lot of white, black and navy and the pop of silver is kind of like the trendy pop of red!
