Styling A Long Boyfriend Blazer
At 5’4′, a long jacket can make me look shorter. Today I’m sharing how I style a long boyfriend blazer to look as tall as possible.
This is not a sponsored post, but my friends at Chico’s sent me some fun pieces, including this cool blazer, so I want to share how I wear it.
Long Blazer
This borrowed from the boys, long plaid boyfriend jacket is a soft gray and ivory color that feels anything but masculine to me. Because it’s longer than I usually wear, I played with color and other details to help me look taller.
No buttons
The open front (without buttons) provides an unbroken line that helps draw the eye up and down. Even matching buttons would be a visual detail that would stop the eye which can shorten your look.
My photographer overlooked the rooster tale on my hair, so please ignore it in these pictures š¤£.
Color
I chose jeans and a top in soft colors that have very little contrast to the jacket. This helps me look taller the same way a column of the same color would.
This turtleneck is a similar Ecru to what’s in the blazer. I love how stretchy and lightweight they are. Perfect for layering and never tight around my neck. I opted for theseĀ Girlfriend Jeans in Harvest moon wash (marked way down). Their soft gray matches the stripes in the plaid. I’ve always had a weakness for colored denim and am particularly fond of neutral options.
Footwear
Would I look taller with a pair of heels? Of course! But my feet aren’t happy in them, so I’m wearing these Rothy’s slip-on sneakers in a gray so pale, they almost look white. Because these sneakers and all Rothy’s shoes are machine washable, I can wear pale colors without worrying about them getting dirty. Dark shoes would have drawn the attention to my feet…I’d rather people look at my face:)
A belt the color of my top would have made my torso look longer. One the same color as the jeans would make my bottom half look longer. I had neither so I skipped one altogether. A dark or contrasting belt would have focused the eye on my waist and .cut my look in half. I tucked the turtleneck in and bloused it over the waistband a bit so you see more of my legs.
Jewelry
To keep the look as light as possible, I added this multi-strand silvertone necklace and earrings. I love the combination of the shiny finish with a hammered texture. It visually blends right into the top, so it doesn’t stop the eye from moving up and down my outfit.
My lip color is my current favorite combo of this lip stain in Fascination, liner in Crazy In Love, topped with this lipstick in Rosewater. It’s a long-wearing combo that doesn’t dry my lips out or smear all over my face when I wear a mask.
Chico’s is having a great sale right now with 25% off most full-priced styles with code 33519 and an extra 50% off sale items that end in .99.
Black and white or Ecru seem to be trending in Chico’s newest collection. Here are some fun picks:
Do you wear colored jeans?

This look is beautiful on you.I really liked this post, at the end of our winter I bought a boyfriend jacket similar to this one and got it for a real bargin, $70 marked down to $6. I was never sure of what to wear with it, but now I will be looking for items like the ones that you have put with your jacket. Thank you for doing these post I enjoy them so much.
That’s an amazing deal. Bravo
I love that soft gray so much I went over and immediately got those pants. It’s just lovely and fresh looking. It’s nice to see things that are neutral, and could go with so many other things, both now in winter and for the coming spring.
They will be great in the spring too! I love clothes that work for several seasons.
A lovely soft look that is easy to toss on and go. As to the question about wearing coloured jeans, yes for sure. I have a soft dove grey with tiny charcoal spots, burgundy, mid blue, deep purple and of course white and deep indigo. I totally agree about the shoe colour, I do not want attention drawn down in most cases with lighter bottoms, so I have quite a number of pinkish nude footwear.
I have one pair of pinkish nude shoes and agree, they are perfect.
Super tips for the petite and loving this outfit on you Jennifer! IMO; casual yet polished at the same time. Also hope you don’t mind me adding; for those who don’t like tucking their sweaters in, they can always under-tuck (it’s lower edge) to create a shorter length. -Brenda-
Oops that should have read ‘under-cuff’. -Brenda-
I under tuck often! It’s a great solution
I like the outfit. I’d prefer my jacket to not be knit, but some more stable fabric. I’d also not tuck in my sweater. With the long jacket, one can wear the sweater untucked, which hides any midsection bulges.
My first impression was that the outfit would be all wrong for me. I love monochromatic and column dressing so couldnāt figure out what bothered me about this. Finally realized itās the wide stripe. It looks to me like upholstery fabric. The scale is too big, too symmetrical. Also I do better with some shaping in a jacket. This one looks a bit too straight.
Pretty, soft color.
This post is great. I am very petite and I already employ some of those suggestions regularly but having it reiterated in one post is just wonderful. Keep doing these kinds of posts as I am sure there a lot of us petites out there that would enjoy these styling tips!
I really like this outfit, both color and textures used. The accessories are just right. I am much shorter than you and I could use some of these concepts. I’m sure “height” is relative and at your height I would feel “tall”. Actually 5’4″ is considered average height. I am fortunate that my legs are longer for my height. My only issue is that my torso is short so I sometimes have to shorten tops and have to be careful of the longer cardigans that they don’t swamp me.
That is a challenge. Belts would also not be your friend. I like them because I have a long torso and short legs:)
A beautiful, polished look, and thanks for sharing the reasons behind your choices.
I hope you found them helpful
Your hair is looking so lovely! Could you do a blog/vlog on how you style your hair? I struggle with styling my fine, thin hair. Thank you!
Yes, I will! I did share in a post here but will update.
Fabulous outfit and looks very elegant and stylish on you! Yes, it makes you look taller.
I will go to Chico’s today to see if they have my size. I like how you keep the outfits classic and simple which translates to elegant.
I would like to know what products you use on your hair. I am letting mine grow out and want a very similar style as you have. I think you can be a model for any magazine!
Thanks for your blog!!!
That’s so kind!! I will put together another post on my hair products and how I style it very soon. In the mean time, I wrote about it here
Love love the outfit on you. All of it works. I will go to Chico’s today to see if I can get it.
It does make you look taller!
I am also interested in what you use on your hair-shampoo, mousse, hairspray-it looks
sooooo stylish and I am going to copy it. Coping is the most sincere form of flattery.
This outfit looks beautiful on you! These tips are very helpful to me. I love long cardigans and blazers but at 5ā3ā itās tricky to pull off the look. My feet also balk at wearing heels so that doesnāt help! Everything about this outfit works together in a cohesive way to achieve the desired effect. Lovely and elegant!
The jacket is really nice and I love the combination. I think it looks comfortable and put together.
Love the all neutral look. It does make you look taller!
I think your hair looks great! My hair is cut in a style very similar to yours. Could you please share how you get the volume on top and what type of hairspray you use to hold without looking stiff? Thanks!
I use so many products it’s crazy. That secret is dry shampoo. I use it every day. Even the day I wash it. I have several. I use this one the day I wash my hair, and this one every other day.
Clean well put together look. Perfect. A+.
Nice outfit! I really like the turtleneck sweater on you. I do like colored jeans and subtle print jeans.
I love this outfit on you!!!!!! Itās perfection and I certainly would wear it!!!!!!!!
Yes, yes and yes to the boyfriend jacket! In fact, I just had my first purchase of this style delivered to my front door this week. There is so much potential to either dress up or dress down this jacket.
You took advantage of this boyfriend style and added beautiful accessories that are allowed to simply shine. I am taking a serious look at the great sale price on those jeans. Your sweater is gorgeous and such a perfect backdrop for your total look.
I must add how great you look in this combination of style and color. Love your hair!
Your smile kinda says it all! Iāve been thinking that when we get past this dark pandemic, the tubes of lipstick, in every possible shade, will be flying off the counter! Let me lead the stampede! Lol
LOL, lipstick will make a comeback but I’m not sure the high heel market will come back as quickly.
