Monday Musings: Shaking Things Up

Happy Monday, ladies. Today I’m sharing what’s new in the zoo and what we did last week. The weather was pretty dismal in Vancouver, so we hopped a seaplane to Vancouver Island, where it was warmer and sunnier. I can’t imagine where my brain was when I neglected to pack a rain jacket and umbrella for this trip, but it sure wasn’t in a logical space. I’ve been using my two Eric Javits sun hats to keep the rain off my head and borrowing my husband’s jackets.

Seaplane

You didn’t read me writing this, but I actually like this jacket. It’s roomy, and it got the job done in comfort

There are several companies that fly these routes, and this time we chose Seair. It’s a quick 15-minute flight to Nanaimo, and the views are amazing. I shared a reel of my trip here.

This hat is labeled straw, but it’s actually made of a 95% polypropylene, 5% polyester blend that takes a real beating. I’ve owned, manhandled, and crushed this hat into tiny bags for many years, and it always pops back into shape! It got soaked in the rain before boarding this flight, yet sprang back with a few tugs on the brim.

Shaking Machines

Have you heard of vibrating platform machines for fitness? My sister-in-law showed me hers, which I couldn’t resist trying out. It feels weird!

I heard it helps with circulation and fluid retention, so I did a deep dive to see more about them. The Mayo Clinic reports that whole-body vibration may reduce back pain, improve strength and balance in older adults and reduce bone loss. There’s not a lot of research on the benefits of these machines, but they seem to be popular. Have you tried one?

New Suitcase

My husband and I both upgraded to this Away Bigger Carry-On Flex for our upcoming trip to Portugal this fall. It’s just a tiny bit bigger than my Mono’s bag but the flex option means I can expand it a few inches which makes a huge difference in the amount of stuff I can cram into it. Did you ever notice that dirty clothes seem to take up more space in a suitcase than clean clothes?

We spent some time at my favorite beach on the island, just soaking in the fresh air and gorgeous scenery. Here’s a small video I made of that visit-

We did not intentionally color-coordinate our shirts

This hat is made from the same polypropylene/polyester as my other Eric Javits hats and feels just as indestructible. I crammed this one into my suitcase for the trip over and it arrived looking like new!

I ALSO LEFT THIS ONE ON THE MIRROR IN JAPAN

As expected, I left my suction cup mirror stuck to the window of the hotel we were staying in, so I will need to reorder it. Thank goodness they’re not expensive because I leave them all over the world. I’m going to order a slightly stronger magnification this time.

I’ve started getting emails about the Nsale already, have you? I’m at the ambassador level, so I can’t shop until July 12th. What day will you be shopping it?

Have a great week, and be sure to wear what makes you feel confident.

  1. I think you look great in your husband’s jacket!

I flew in a seaplane once back in the 1960s when our family was flown into Garibaldi Lake with all our camping gear and hiked out a week later. We lived in North Vancouver at the time. I was in my teens and it was without question my all time favourite family vacation. I’m wondering how the cost of flying across to the island compares to going by ferry and also what you do for transportation on the other side?

    1. It was more expensive than the ferry for sure, but the ferries were all booked up and we couldn’t get a reservation to bring our car back,

  2. I may surprise my husband with the suction magnifying mirror. He uses the magnifying mirror all the time and might miss it on our upcoming trip to Vancouver, Victoria, and Alaska via cruise. You made my day this morning when I opened your email. I was hoping you would give us a glimpse into how you dressed in Vancouver and Victoria. You looked adorable. My plans for what to pack are all over the place. Seeing what you wore really helps. Any other advice and direction on outfits would be appreciated. Thanks

    1. It’s warming up now so pack layers!

      1. Thanks for confirming my thoughts on what to pack. I find it so hard to feel like I am packing wisely.

  3. You have the perfect reason to go to Arc’teryx Outlet store and buy a new rain jacket. 🙂

  4. We went to visit friends on the island 30 years ago. What a beauty place. We drove all the way from Colorado to Washington State. Took the ferry over and then drove to our friends. No GPS in those days either! I’m so glad you are enjoying your visits with family and your long vacation.

  5. I hear ya on forgetting to pack some items. For me, it got to the point where I had to make a packing list that I print out before each trip. I even have it organized by AM Routine, PM Routine, Clothing, Misc., and an area for notes. It’s become a lifesaver! I also customize it according to where & when I’m going away. Then, I simply check off items as I pack them and–for the most part ;-D–don’t forget things as much as I used to!

  6. I use my vibration plate every day. Three times a week I do my upper body/arms weight toning while on it. The other days – I just stand on it. I think it helps with circulation and balance. My husband tried it, and he said he felt his neuropathy in his feet felt better. Need to get him on it more often.

    1. Interesting! My husband has neuropathy in his feet too. Maybe we should get one.

  7. Love the video and happy to hear you’ve followed the sun and lost the rain showers! Looks like a fabulous getaway.
Our beaches are mostly sandy abd right now the humidity is in the tropical range so my hair is a mass of frizzy curls – only during summer. A mess! Once our weather cools off my
bob looks like a bob! Lol
