It’s Been Hair Raising
I’ve struggled with thin hair forever. It’s never been my crowning glory because it’s fine, poker straight and I don’t have much of it. That may be one of the reasons I love hats so much.
Several years ago, my hair began falling out, which I’ve shared about here and here. My thyroid is fine now but my hair has begun falling out again. Ugh. That molting stage is so hard on a woman’s confidence.
All I can do is wait this stage out and do what I can to make my hair appear thicker. I’ve started using some new products which do help. I always use things that give my hair body, but during times like these, I need the big guns.
I start with a dime-size dollop of
This Living Proof dry shampoo goes on right after I dry my hair. Yes, I use it on clean hair because it coats and makes it feel like I have more hair. Next, I spray on this Dry Texture Spray which takes all the silkiness out of my hair. Then I brush my hair lightly and finish with this Volume Spray, while I fluff sections of my hair.
It’s a lot of “stuff” and I can feel it on my hair, but it works very well.

We’ve let some of the layers from this cut grow out so the bottom isn’t so see-through. My cut looks more like a bob now which actually feels nice for a change.
Have you struggled with hair loss?

Hi Jennifer
This is in reply to your question about the brand of laser cap I have had success with. I use the Theradome laser cap. It looks like a bike helmet you leave on for 20 minutes. It’s uses a count down timer and automatically shuts off. It’s rechargeable, no plug. It recommends using 3-4 times a week but I use it almost everyday. It has helped me.
Thank you so much, Anita. I am looking at several to try because I would like to stop using the Rogaine
I was drawn to this blog because your hair looks like mine, silky, fine, highlighted and straight. Your styling has always looks great. It is helpful to hear the “ behind the scenes “ issues. After moving many times and going through the trauma of finding a stylist,I have discovered the Aveda chain. I have been there 10 years now and would feel comfortable walking into one in another city. They appear to have pretty consistent techniques for coloring and cutting hair, with long training requirements under supervision. I have never seen anyone leave with bad color or extreme styling. I go to the stylist who trains others at three salons and she is experienced and honest with me about the limits of my fine locks and aging issues. It is expensive, but worth it to me.
Have you tried Minoxidil? If so does it work?
Rogaine is minoxidil
I’m 52 and my hair has been thinning since menopause started. Like you I’m using products to fluff it out. I think my hair must be molting at the moment, as it falls out easily all over my head. Thanks for sharing your journey with us all.
I luv your hair. I have an abundance of hair and I need to have it thinned at least once a year. Be happy to have your beautiful hair.
Helpful suggestions! Mine has always been fine and on the thin side, but I’m seeing more scalp than I like now, at 74. No complaints, though, as I watch and try to encourage a 10-year-old granddaughter who started losing hers at age 7 and is now bald. Autoimmune alopecia. The treatments she’s been on for 10 months aren’t working. I do appreciate the openness of these women’s forums!
I wish I could share with you, Jennifer! My hair is the exact opposite… thick and curly (completely unruly, actually) with tons of body. I have to use product to try to tame it. Even with the thinning that came with my cancer treatments, I have more than enough. Life with hair just isn’t fair, is it?
I always enjoy your posts and this is the first time I have written on a topic. I know you drive a long way to get your hair done. My hairdresser gave me this tip for anyone that is looking for a new hairdresser. Visit a department store such as Nordstrom and look at the women that work at the makeup counters. Most will have really good hair do’s. Pick someone who has hair like yours and ask where she gets her hair done. It is a really good place to start!!
Jennifer, I thank you and everyone else for all the thinning hair suggestions. I too have Hashimoto’s and have had baby fine hair my whole life (along with dry skin, weight gain, tiredness, feeling cold – you name it). I have added hydrolyzed collagen powder to my protein shakes in the morning and have noticed less hair fallout. I have a problem using mousse since when I go to style it the next day my hair breaks off as I comb it out. I’m definitely going to order the Kevin Murphy products that you mentioned. Whatever you’re using your hair looks great! I always look forward to your articles.
The quirks & surprises of aging & our hair! I had been keeping mine short & layered for 15 years. I decided to let it grow & was so surprised to find that my formerly stick straight hair had become curly! Had to relearn products & styling techniques.
