Saturday at Home in California
Do you ever have one of those weeks when everything turns to crap? I often do, but this past one was a doozy.
I flew home from Vancouver on Monday, wearing a new Eileen Fisher vest and top—both in the color Alpine. That alone felt like a departure, since I usually stick to neutrals. But I didn’t stop there. I pinned on a few favorite brooches, tied on a fun, patterned scarf, and fully embraced the moment: color, pattern, and styling that was anything but minimal.
I felt stylish, but in retrospect, I looked and felt exhausted. Perhaps that’s why I kept adding accessories… for the lift and energy they can provide.
And then… things took a turn.
I won’t rehash it all here, but let’s just say I hit a wall. I sat down to write, and the words simply wouldn’t come. So I did the only thing I could…I gave myself permission to step away and let the blog be quiet. I’ve gotten into the habit of posting 5 days a week, so I felt a bit unnerved when it went quiet… but that’s all I could manage.
I’m also going to skip my Sunday email and see if I can start next week on a stronger footing.

I’ve been on the hunt for a brown woven suede shoulder bag. I spotted this amazing bag yesterday, but it’s only a clutch, and although that’s a popular style these days…I’m not that cool and prefer a handle of some sort. What I have been carrying is my new Cuyana tote in cherry!
Has anyone else noticed that the Google logo is candy cane striped? Argh…it’s not even Halloween yet!

You have given me an excellent example of taking the time off you need. I retired at age 70 after 50 years of professional nursing, including extensive university studies, continuing education, and 7 years as a solo practitioner. This means I understand how much of a commitment and energy it takes to manage your own business and stay current while remaining true to your values. I am 72 now, and I am ready to stop my extended rest period. I appreciate what I have learned from you, especially regarding hair loss and styling. I feel since we are not “employing” you, whenever you choose to write something is up to you and how you’re feeling and your schedule, and I am grateful for when you do want to post – love the travel outfit and did not think you looked exhausted – I thought you looked great! (Obviously I won’t be applying for a mind-reading job anytime soon since I thought you looked terrific and the outside was matching the inside :)!)

Here I thought it was my iPad! If you need rest, take it. Get out that simple knitting project and a great Audible book, Matcha on the side table and if it is chilly like here in Colorado, then a fire turned on in the fireplace. Tune off for the weekend or longer. I’ll keep an eye out for you. You looked lovely and slim in your Alpine outfit. I hate tight clothes as well. You take care of your health.
