How Scarves Help Pull Color Together: A J.Jill Try On

Let’s try this post once again. After I published it last week, J.Jill went into a tizzy, updating things on their backend, which turned most of my links into dead ends. Since then, they’ve released a new collection, so I’ve added some of the highlights that caught my eye.

J.Jill always has a great selection of scarves, so I added a few to these outfits to pull the colors together and change the feel of otherwise simple outfits. The clothes themselves are easy and practical. The scarves are what shift the look.

If you’re new here, welcome. A try-on is simply a look at what’s new in the store, shown on me so you can better judge how things might fit and drape on a real body. For reference, I’m 5’4″ with broad shoulders and straight hips. I tend to notice length and shoulder fit first, which is why I comment on those details throughout.

QUILTED ZIP FRONT JACKET size S / PAISLEY SCARF / LONG SLEEVE SHIRTTAIL TEE size S / SLIM ANKLE 8 petite

The quilted zip-front jacket is a soft sage green in a casual bomber shape. It’s garment-dyed cotton with a lightweight, broken-in feel, so it layers easily without stiffness. The color reads calm rather than sporty, which makes it easy to wear with white or denim. It fits true to size.

This long-sleeve shirttail tee is a celadon shade, which coordinates nicely with the jacket. It’s a great layering piece.

I added this paisley scarf to add a softer color near my face and to help blend the two greens together. It’s a cotton-blend fabric that’s soft and flexible, so it drapes easily without feeling bulky.

I styled this over these slim white ankle jeans, which are a J.Jill staple. They’re slim, not skinny…much like we discussed here- The “Skinny Jean” is Back (But Not How You Remember It): 2026 Definitive Denim Guide

ZIP FRONT CARDI petite S / FLORAL PRINT SQAURE SCARF / STRIPED TEE size S / WIDE LEG JEANS petite 8

This fun little zip-front cardigan feels like a great, easy layer. The neckline and relaxed shape make it casual. I’m wearing a petite, but I’d choose a regular length for my long torso to get a bit more length. The slightly blouson effect at the cuffs and hem gives it a relaxed volume with a baseball-jacket vibe.

The floral-print square scarf brings in soft color and a touch of vintage charm. The modal fabric has a bit of weight and texture, so it drapes nicely whether you knot it or let it hang. I simply folded it into a large triangle, then kept folding until it was long and narrow.

Underneath, the relaxed boat-neck tee is 100 % cotton with a yarn-dyed stripe and a subtle slub texture. The stripes are wide on the torso and narrow on the sleeves…sorry I forgot to get a photo without the jacket.

I styled them with these high-rise wide-leg jeans. They have a flattering silhouette with a defined waist and a relaxed leg that falls straight from the hip. They feel substantial without being stiff, and they create a great silhouette for the shorter jacket.

Here are a few more of their great scarves this season:

COTTON BLEND KNIT CARDI size S / PLAID BRUSHED TWILL SHIRT size S / SLIM FIT JEANS 8 petite

To me, this cotton cardigan looks more like a knit blazer, thanks to its structured shape and notched lapels. The fabric has enough body to hold its shape without feeling stiff, which gives it a more finished look than a typical cardigan. I’m wearing English Rose Heather, which very nearly came home with me, and it also comes in two other soft colors.

Under it, I’m wearing this soft flannel plaid shirt. The brushed twill fabric feels comfortable against the skin and layers easily without adding bulk. I’m wearing the Oceanic Multi colorway, a pink-and-navy combination that adds interest without feeling loud.

The slim jeans are the same as the white ones above in the same size. Both fit, but the white ones look snugger, so I always like to size up in white jeans.

PURE JILL RELAXED PULLOVER size S / PURE JILL SLIM KNIT CROPS size S / FLORAL PRINT SQUARE SCARF

I’m wearing the Pure Jill relaxed pullover in a soft French lilac. It’s a longer, lightweight knit with a relaxed cut that drapes rather than clings. The extra length is what makes it work so well with slim-fit jeans, giving coverage without feeling heavy or oversized.

The floral-print square scarf picks up color from both the sweater and the jeans, blending them together. That’s one of the best things about scarves. They connect pieces that might otherwise feel separate, making an outfit look finished without adding weight or bulk. I folded it into a triangle, wrapped it twice around my neck, then tied a soft knot and tucked the ends in. The fabric is soft and flexible, so it feels cozy without being warm.

These Pure Jill indigo knit cropped jeans are in a longtime favorite fabric from J.Jill. They feel more like knit pants but look like denim, making them especially comfortable for all-day wear. The 25″ inseam is full-length on me, plus they come in petite and tall.

I’m using scarves here as a way to connect colors. When a scarf picks up tones from more than one piece, it helps the outfit feel cohesive without adding weight or bulk.

Their latest winter collection features fresh colors in wear-now layers. I see a lot of soft pinks, pale greens, fresh blues, and versatile neutrals. Here’s what caught my eye:

This twist front button-down top answers the question: “How do I get the length of a half tuck, without tucking anything in?”

This patterned sweater was displayed on the front table and seemed very popular with shoppers. It comes in 2 colors and has 3/4 sleeves.

The jewelry selection is almost zero at my local store so it was fun to see whats now onine:

J.Jill has lots of new arrivals for spring, but the pieces that matter most are the ones that fit easily into a wardrobe you already have. When clothes work with your usual silhouettes, your preferred colors, your real life…they’re far more likely to get worn.

That’s how wardrobes stay useful. Not by constant updating, but by choosing pieces that connect, layer well, and don’t require a rethink every time you get dressed.

Are these colors you wear for spring?

I do not have a large collection of scarves, but I want to know how to store them in a small closet. I have space in a drawer, but don’t know how to organize them so each one is visible. To date, most of my scarves are bandana size, but I do have three large ones. I hope to purchase more scarves. Thank you, Jennifer.

    1. I recommend hanging them so you see and are reminded you own them. Many can hang together on a single flocked hanger

  2. I just got their catalogue of the new arrivals (Feb 5th) and this was my take on the colors……brown was big this past winter and I thought they did a spring version of a lighter brown, and then camel and tan and some other muted colors. I just thought it was an interesting to move from winters dark color and use lighter shades in the same color family transitioning into spring. Then of course I look at the models hair, eye and skin color to see what I think I might be able to wear…lol.

  3. I’m so glad you reposted this! I was excited about a scarf post and then it wouldn’t open! And now I was able to get that sage green quilted jacket at an unexpected discount at check out! Thank you! I too would love to see any scarf and bandana tutorials you have. I have many but don’t often wear them because I get hung up on old “rules” like don’t mix prints, yet you make every outfit with them look perfect.
