How to Look Stylish This Winter Without Spending a Fortune
Walmart sponsors this post. Thanks for supporting the brands that work with AWSL.
Looking stylish in the winter doesn’t have to mean spending a fortune. The trick is finding those well-made, affordable pieces that look elevated but don’t require a big investment. When I kept hearing that Walmart had really upped its fashion game over the last few years, I was curious. I’ve had luck the last two years finding budget-friendly wardrobe essentials, so I thought I’d try again.
I ordered a few items, and I’ve found myself reaching for them again and again. It turns out Walmart’s fall fashion lines are one of the best sources for classic, easy-to-wear pieces that make it simple to look put together.

Building a Budget-Friendly Winter Wardrobe
If you’re trying to update your winter wardrobe without overhauling your closet or overspending, here’s what I’d focus on:
- Start with texture. Look for sherpa, quilted nylon, or soft knits to add visual interest without much effort.
- Stick to a cohesive color palette. I’m partial to grey and black, but this can work lots of ways!
- Mix price points. Don’t be afraid to pair a $20 pullover with your favorite designer jeans or a high-end bag. Affordable doesn’t have to mean bad quality.
- Focus on fit. Try sizing up or down depending on the brand.
- Choose pieces you’ll actually wear. The best finds are the ones you reach for over and over again.
Classic Winter Staples on a Budget

These Walmart pieces are comfortable, practical, and pulled together without the price tag to match. I can’t say no to that kind of surprise, especially when it’s built around the timeless pieces I always seem to reach for.

The first classic piece in this outfit is the quilted jacket. I’ve been wanting a barn jacket for several years, but they all seemed too rustic-looking until I ordered this Quilted Barn Jacket by Time and True.
It’s lightweight but still warm, with enough structure to look polished. The simple diamond quilting gives it a bit of texture, and the soft collar keeps it from feeling too outdoorsy.

A gray cable-knit sweater is about as timeless as it gets. I like this one because it’s soft, easy to layer, and hits that ideal middle ground, not too chunky and not too fitted. The fabric has enough weight to feel substantial, but not so much that it turns into a heat trap the moment you step indoors.
It’s also worth mentioning that neutral sweaters like this one make everything else in your closet work together more effectively. Pair it with black, navy, or camel, and it will always work.

Flare jeans have earned their spot as a classic fall staple. The shape is flattering on so many body types because it balances the leg and gives a bit of movement.
That said, they’re also one of those styles that can go wrong quickly if the proportions are off. You need to buy them at or close to the length you need because hemming them destroys the proportions. Luckily, these high-rise flare jeans are available in regular, petite, and tall inseams of 30.5″, 32.5″, and 34.5″. The 30.5 is a hair long for me and on the border of long, but it works nicely with these black knit booties.
It’s rare to find affordable denim that checks all those boxes, so I’m considering this pair a victory.

This next outfit includes a few pieces you might not think of as traditional fall staples, but they absolutely can be. When styled right, they add warmth, texture, and a relaxed sophistication that fits perfectly into an everyday fall wardrobe.
The pullover is soft, plush, and surprisingly flattering. The fabric has that cozy, teddy bear feel without being too thick or heavy, and the half-zip neckline keeps it from looking like I’m headed to the gym. I layered it over a chambray shirt for a bit of texture and contrast, which makes it look more intentional.
MORE WALMART JACKETS THAT CAUGHT MY EYE
A good pair of neutral booties is another fall essential I refuse to go without. These booties have a slightly elevated heel that adds a touch of length for these flare jeans and are comfortable to wear all day. I like how the texture complements the plush pullover without competing with it.
And then there’s the fuzzy clutch. It’s not something I usually reach for, but I couldn’t resist. The soft texture adds a bit of playfulness to the look, tying in with the cozy theme without being too matchy. It’s the kind of accessory that makes people ask where you found it, and when you tell them it’s from Walmart, they’re just as surprised as I was.

What I’m Taking Away
What this reminded me of is that great style doesn’t have to come with a high price tag. Walmart’s winter collection proves that affordable doesn’t have to mean basic. Between the cozy layers, great denim, and classic staples, I found outfits I’ll actually wear on repeat, and so can you.
Walmart.com is launching new collections throughout the holiday season, featuring festive styles and cold-weather essentials for the whole family. Have you shopped at Walmart lately?

I never think of Walmart but these pieces do look good. Helpful too if you’re wanting to try a trend.
Btw…I didn’t fully understand the problem with your iPhone UNTIL I noticed iOS 26 update waiting on mine. Read about it, have NOT loaded. THEN saw it’s also lurking on my iPad. 🤯
Have fun!
🤣😂
I live in a very rural area in WV. Walmart is the only store to buy clothes unless you want to shop the boutique shops, which I cannot afford. I buy most of my clothes from Walmart I find they are of good quality and they look like the high priced items from other stores. I shop online because I find they have many items that are not in the store. Shipping is fast, I usually get my items within two days. Thank you so much for showing items from Walmart so that other women can see you don’t have to spend a fortune to look stylish!
My pleasure Joyce!
Walmart is five minutes from my house! It is literally the only place to shop in my town. I must drive 40 miles to Pueblo or 50 miles up to Colorado Springs for any other shopping choice! I love the jeans on you but you are 3” taller than I am. A 28” inseam is as long as I can go without tripping on them. Why are designers make petite sizes so long? I have to shorten them. I have three pair that are waiting on my sewing table right now. There also isn’t a good tailor in our town. I love Time and Tru and Secret Treasures brands at Walmart. I will have to try Sofia Vagara brand. Thank you for reminding me that my local store is a good place for basics which I wear every day.
I think the pants are longer because they assume we are wearing heels.
So glad you’ve included Walmart in your lineup! I have several pieces in my wardrobe from there including a classic black jean jacket for $23!!! It’s gorgeous!! The T shirts and underwear are particularly good buys. I’ve been having hot flashes and got moisture a wicking T shirt from No Boundaries that I sleep in. I liked the first one so well I went back and bought it in all their colors. At about $5 a piece it was a win!
I just ordered the black barn coat and a winter hat to match from your Wal-Mart link. The coat looks adorable and at such an affordable price. Thanks for showing us this!
It’s a great jacket, I think you’ll love it, I do
Thank you for including some reasonably priced clothing. Many of us can’t or don’t want to spend a ton of money on clothing. It’s nice to know that we can find great style at all price points.
Thanks for this post. I don’t often shop for clothes at Walmart, but I have. Especially for “trendy” pieces or items I’m not sure I will love.
The classic pieces I do spend more on and wear for years.
Thanks.
Trends should be affordable because they’re short lived.
Nice job finding affordable everyday every woman pieces. The fuzzy purse sure is a conversation starter. 🙂
It’s so cute!
Such great finds Jennifer- I guess I’ll need to check Wal Mart out again
Thank you
I find Walmart has the best t-shirts in both short and long sleeves by Time and True. I like them better than the ones I buy from Talbots and JJill and they are usually under $10! Very easy to layer or wear alone.
Time and True is a great quality.
I’ve hardly ever looked at Walmart for clothes but these look really nice. I love the suede boots. Guess they really have stepped up their game.
How fun is that bag! Both pairs of booties also look like something that could fit in my wardrobe. Love the more elevated looking barn jacket. Thanks for the tips on budget friendly fall classics. Would you wear that fuzzy bag with a dressy outfit for texture contrast or does that seem too cutesy?
It certainly could! I also like it as a fun touch to a casual outfit.
Thanks for this post. Shopping at Walmart might take a little more time, but it is worth it. I am going to try out the jeans.
The Tried and True brand have good quality items at a reasonable price. The long-sleeved T- shirts are very nice for layering. I find the undergarments at Walmart are well-made with a wide selection, including Warner bras. I once bought a Sofia V. dress for $15.00 and wore it to a wedding. It was beautiful!
I love cheaper options to try out new trends, bridge the gap when changing sizes or even to buy something you know will have limited wear but need to own. Walmart in Canada seems to have different stuff. As you spend a fair bit of time in Vancouver, have you noticed anything worth mentioning there?
I don’t do a lot of shopping in Vancouver because I know the brands I like in the US. Sorry I can’t be more help.
Hi Jennifer love your outfits they look so nice!! My husband recently said he would love a flannel nightshirt and guess where I found one at a unbelievable price, Walmart!!! Very happy customer and he is going to be pleased as he is getting two!! Take care xo
They’ve really got some great pieces this winter.
I’ve never ordered any type of clothing item from Walmart, but I’m trying the low heeled suede boots. Impressive that they come in a wide width which I need. You’ve never steered me wrong, Jennifer, so I’m looking forward to getting these booties!
They’re nice and wide. I can even wear heavy socks in them.
Thanks for sharing the Walmart styles. Recently I found an outfit (as a petite it is hard) and the price was excellent and the quality good.
Thanks for today’s post. Many of my items come from Walmart. I get most of my basic layering pieces from them, especially when items are put on sale at the end of a season. Ironically, I recently picked up a leopard print dress at Goodwill to find it was from Walmart. I love the pieces you featured, but found to my disappointment that they were either sold out of my size L (the sweater was currently available online in size S) or not available within a 30-mile radius of my home. Affordability includes mileage and shipping considerations. Oh well, next time!! I scan their racks regularly to see what they have that will fit into my wardrobe. Thanks again for the post, Jennifer!!
Omg! Finally a designer saw the great clothes at Walmart. I live in Sequim Washington on the Olympic Pennisula. I have Walmart and Ross as my 2 main places to shop besides Costco and a few boutiques. I have had such luck with Walmart my favorite brand is time n true but it runs about 1 size large,FYI.THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS GREAT POST. AND YOU LOOKED GREAT!
Sequim is such a beautiful place! We’ve been through twice and really loved it.
