Weekend Reading 04.26.25

Happy weekend, ladies. It’s turned cold, windy, and downright nasty here. I love, and I hate that, but nothing much is on our agenda, so I can stay in and hunker down to finish my book. What are you reading these days?

Crossed my radar:

  • I was so excited for these shoes to arrive. They are amazingly comfy and fit my foot perfectly, but they squeak like I’m passing wind with every step…so they’re going back. Maybe these lower-footbed ones will be better.
  • Athleta has once earned my loyalty with so many great pieces, and this white shirtdress looks like another winner.

Sales of Note:

HAVEN WELL WITHIN has 30% off your entire purchase. This pretty linen-tiered skirt is lined in 100% cotton. It would pair beautifully with this organic cotton & linen sweater in a soft ivory stripe. This chambray maxi skirt is also a great piece and will be nice and cool in the hot weather.

EILEEN FISHER is giving 25% off sale items. This crinkle silk shirt is gorgeous, and I’m seriously tempted at this price. I have this organic linen layering tank in several colors, and it’s fabulous. These washable flex-ponte trousers are fabulous…and they landed in my cart.

BODEN is giving 25% off everything with the code KN4H. If you love color, this embroidered linen tassel dress is “selling like hotcakes”.

J. CREW has up to 50% off summer-ready styles, including this classsic shirt in eyelet linen which is on it’s way to me :). The mix of classic with eyelet and linen is what did it for me.

CHICOS has mix and match linen with 40% off 2 or more linen pieces plus up to 50% off markdowns.

TALBOTS friends and family sale is on with 30% off your entire order.

The cough you described is exactly what mine sounds like, but what I have is Chronic Bronchitis which is a form of COPD. It’s not contagious and it does sound awful and I have it through no fault of my own. I have never smoked but spent my early years in a smoke filled house. Later I worked around smokers before OSHA put a stop to that. I take a monthly Tezspire shot to cut back on the constant coughing, but I still cough a lot. It’s very annoying but all phlegmy coughs are not the same. 😉

    1. Good point, but she explained she has been sick for several weeks so I did not want to take the risk

  2. Unbelievable that someone would go to a contained class with such a bad cough! So glad you left, hopefully after the instructor opened the door the offender got the hint. But probably not unfortunately! I sure love that Marine Layer dress, but wish it were offered in plus sizes.

  3. Some great choices in sales of note. I’ve had my eye on that jcrew shirt, too. Wish I snagged it when the chocolate brown was available. I’m looking forward to seeing your new items….especially that pink dress! Drooling already.

    Hoping you stay well!

  4. Good for you! Coughing people scare me.

  5. That woman was ill and came to exercise?! It was not only bad for everyone in the room but terrible for her. Especially if it is Covid. Some people are just not thinking about sharing those nasty germs. I’m hoping that you don’t become ill Jennifer. My grandchildren are all adults now but we have 14 great grandchildren scattered in California, Arizona and Iowa. None in Colorado so we don’t see them except in text chain pictures! The two grandchildren that are still in college live the closest but do not keep in touch with us. They are too busy. We learn about them from phone calls with their parents. Even when we moved out here to Colorado in 1995, our kids were on the move for their military careers or their jobs. So we chose to live here where we have always loved the mountains. Families grow apart.

  6. Question: for the senior discount with Amazon Prime, was that only for seniors on Medicaid, SNAP, etc.? That was noted at the end of the article and wasn’t too clear. Perhaps the reference was only in regards to their streaming services.

    1. I am not sure myself so best to reach out to them

    2. You are correct. The discount is for medicaid seniors ONLY

  7. I just finished Bellevue by Robin Cook, James, and Madame Secretary. All different fiction venues but entertaining!

  8. If I had been in class with you, I would’ve left with you! I guess some people just are not aware of how their health might affect others. We recently changed our table in a restaurant because a gentleman beside us was coughing nonstop. Stay healthy!

  9. You made the right decision to leave Pilates class. Sick people need to stay home. I am a retired teacher and experienced this phenomenon a lot. I used to use Clorox wipes between classes to keep the germs down. Unfortunately, my classroom did not have a window to open. Interestingly, I did not get sick very often, but the younger teachers seemed to.
Thank you for all the great information! I enjoy your posts: you are down to earth, practical, and knowledgeable.

  10. I would have done the same thing re: leaving the pilates class!!!!!!!! After having Covid last early October and being sick with covid, 2 body rashes, sinus infection, and 5 week eye infection until beginning of December. I mask up all the time, concerts, plays, church etc. Yes, take care of yourself.

    1. I seem very susteptible too so I’d rather be careful than sorry.

  11. We are active in our grandkids lives, but not overly involved. They are lovely human beings and a joy to spend time with. I just returned from a Netherlands “tulip cruise” and the weather was beautiful for our visit to Keukenhof Gardens. I enjoy travel, but enjoy my domestic life too.

    1. That cruise sounds amazing!!

  12. Brenda Mowbray says:

As someone who catches what others want to share very easily I congratulate you on leaving the class. Really your Pilates teacher should have taken the person aside and asked them to leave.

I don’t understand the mentality of folk wanting to spread germs!

Thank you for the Prime seniors info.

Enjoy your grandchildren. I love spending time with mine.

    1. I wish the instructor had spoken up as well.

  13. Jennifer: your impressive action, gives me courage to do the same in the future! Always look forward to your Vancouver BC visits and if possible would appreciate Canadian shopping recommendations and fun things to do in Vancouver. It is such a beautiful city.

  14. I find it disturbing that anyone can be so selfish to come out in public when they are obviously sick. The urge to say something is strong but like you I just distance myself.

I haven’t taken part in raising my grandchildren. I lived abroad when they were born so saw them once a year, then moved back but across the country for my husband’s job. We loved it here so we retired here. I see my grandchildren (and my daughters ) twice a year and FaceTime with them often but none of the responsibilities have fallen on me. I have friends who are raising their grandchildren during the week and so that is their life. Our retirement has been one adventure after another. I’ll take our retirement years over theirs!

    1. Your adventurous retirement sounds glorious!

    2. I agree. It’s really not ok to attend the class when so obviously I’ll.
What am I ready? I’m reading The Paris Library by Janet Skeslien Charles. If you like historical fiction, you will enjoy this book.
I am very involved with my grandchildren. I take care of the a few days each I, also still working full-time. I’m well past typical retirement age, but don’t feel ready to slow down nor do I feel the need to .

  15. I so do not blame you for leaving your class! How rude of a contagious sick person to go to a class and “share” the germs! Great post, especially the senior discounts.

    1. I thought that was an interesting article too.

    2. Mary Lou Holt says:

Coughs are not necessarily contagious. I have chronic bronchitis and I cough a lot but it’s not harmful.

  16. Sorry to hear about your experience in Pilates. I believe I caught covid last November from the person who drew my blood at my clinic. She was coughing so hard. She stepped away twice. Two days later I tested positive. It’s certainly possible that it was elsewhere but that very direct contact was it in my mind. I couldn’t walk away!!!

    1. Oh no! Covid was exactly what came to my mind and I want to avoid ever getting it again!

  17. I can’t keep squeaky shoes either. Plus, way too expensive to be noisy. I did not know Amazon Prime has a senior discount, that’s huge!😄

  18. Our three grandsons (and their parents) visited us in Florida for both the February and April breaks. Both time I ended up with a cold, but I wouldn’t change their visits for the world. I’m anticipating more colds when we head north for the summer, but it’ll be worth it to spend more time with them! I’m hoping I’ll eventually build up some immunity LOL!

    1. My littlest grandson is picking up everything at Daycare but that’s to be expected and it’s a price worth paying to cuddle with him 😍

  19. Janet Galley says:

Good for you, Jennifer, for listening to both your brain and your heart, and for making yourself a priority. Those are difficult things for many of us to do. It sounds like you handled your departure perfectly.
Stay well and thank you for sharing your experience with us.

    1. Thanks Janet. Happy Saturday

  20. I’m on vacation right now at the beach and I wish I had that hat tote!! I will definitely be ordering that because a hat goes everywhere with me. Great find!

    1. I love mine. Have fun!
