Weekend Reading 08.09.25
Happy Saturday! We headed south for a small road trip down the coast and have been having a blast exploring new places. It reminds me of the fun we used to have when we had a little trailer.

Morning tea on our balcony, watching the seagulls swoop and generally make a racket. You’ll notice I travel with my rubber Birks because I refuse to walk barefoot on any hotel carpet.
Many of you enjoyed this post on advocating for yourself at the doctor and how to prepare your home when a loved one comes home from surgery. Are there other healthy aging topics you’d like us to explore here? Please share your ideas in the comments.
On my Radar:
- Fall clothes for sure. The weather here in the Pacific Northwest is decidedly cooler, so I’m looking forward to seeing what the stores bring in.
- Is anyone surprised that Martha Stewart is launching a skin care line with a dermatologist?
- My Vince trainers are a fabulous price at Nordstrom Rack. I have them in another color and attest to how comfy they are.
- My No Makeup Makeup finally arrived, and I love it! The Porcelain is the perfect shade for me.
- Do These 7 Habits Lead to Happiness in Old Age?
- My giant jar of this yummy body butter arrived, and since we’re driving, I brought it with me. I never pack heavy things, but a road trip means all bets are off 🤣
- 7 Outdated Laundry Rules to Ignore in 2025
- I tried this faux suede moto jacket on yesterday, and it’s gorgeous…if I only wore this color.

I really enjoy reading your posts, and all of the comments from the wonderful women who follow along. I learn so much from all of you.
As a female in my sixties, with family history of dementia, I am always looking for ways to keep my brain sharp. A doctor recently told me that “experiences” are just as important as the logic puzzles etc. She also mentioned that as we age, we tend to think that the years are flying by, but experiences will actually slow time down. Wondering if you have any thoughts or tips on keeping our minds as strong as our bodies.
That is a great idea fior a blog post! I think we can all benefit from keeping our minds strong
Love your posts! Here’s a challenging topic for you to consider: incontinence. It has a major impact on daily life, sleep habits, clothing choices, and mental health. Plus, it’s a deep dark secret! Anxious to hear your thoughts on it.
Incontinence is a huge challenge many women (and men) struggle with. I’m fortunate to not suffer with it, but will see what I can learn to share Susan.
Topic of interest. When do have “that” surgery? My one knee is shot and I’m told I will need a knee replacement. Some days I’m fine and limp a bit, other days I hurt. Sometimes I hurt for a week or two, like I cannot walk.
We still have really good health insurance.
Do I wait until I’m in agony or be proactive?
FYI- just writing this was good for me.
That’s a tough one and a great idea for a post! My husband’s surgeon told us he would recover faster if he had it done when younger. It also means you have many more pain free years.
You are such a temptress! I just had to order the Vince trainers and the moto jacket! Maybe you should rethink the color on that-you looked gorgeous in red and you said that wasn’t your color. I think this would look great on you too. Enjoy your trip, it looks and sounds wonderful!
I ordered the No Make up Makeup in Fair. I have a little more color even with hats in the summer. At 80, I could use a little light blending. I really hope it works as it is very expensive for me. I will let you know. Let us know how it works for you. I agree that stress over current events and politics is a big problem for me. The country I knew has completely changed for the worse since 2016. I’m too old to do anything but wring my hands. We don’t need to talk about the issues and events but the symptoms of stress and how to relieve it. I also am struggling with a stomach bug and it starts to go away and comes right back. So issues of aging affecting immunity and how to boost immunity as we age. Problems of infirmity as we age, the fears that seem to be there that never were a few years ago. I am stable and appear normal. My friends wouldn’t know that I struggle. So not at the point of needing therapy as much as listening to you and your readers suggestions.
Thank you so much for sharing Sydney! That’s a great topic. You need to know you are certainly not alone with this stress. I stopped reading and watching the news many years ago after I read the advice in a book by Dr Andrew Weil, who I have tremendous respect for.
I love those trainers. I struggle with arthritis and wondered if others do too. Or just talking about living with pain could be a big help to discuss.
That’s a great topic. Thanks Rosemary
Traveling along the coast sounds lovely. You are inspiring me to plan a jaunt myself. With the kids back in school but the weather still nice could be just the ticket.
Thank you
Safe travels
Cristi
I really appreciate the articles you wrote on medical equipment and being one’s own advocate.
I’d love to see articles about mental health during chaotic times- something so many of us are struggling with!
Great idea!
I am ordering those Vince trainers!
No, I am not surprised Martha Stewart has a skin care line, as she is a business woman. I wish she had started sooner. Her face is lovely, blessed with good genes. She has always looked 10 years younger than her actual age.
I love sitting out in the morning in an inviting place, so peaceful.
She does look lovely but with lots of help – face lift, make up artists, etc. so marketing a line of creams might be a touch false advertising. “You too can look this young in your 70/80s.”
Is the no makeup makeup available at any retailers ?
It would be nice to try on a few shades until I knew what shade was best vs. guessing at the online colors and hoping for the best.
I agree but not that I know of. I ordered mine from their site. I’m usually fair with cool or neutral undertones so it seemed as easy choice. Their may be other shades that work for me too but this coverage is light and it blends really well.
Very much enjoy your blog. Thinking you might want to do something on travel insurance. Your post on medical equipment made me think of this. I recently had to have emergency surgery while abroad. Lots of key learnings from this experience.
Great idea! We always buy travel medical for insurance ourselves.
Thank you for being a voice for mature women.
I like reading about products for mature skin, clothes and how to take care of myself to age more gracefully.
This support helps a lot as I enter a new decade.
Oooh! Thanks for pointing out that deal on Vince trainers! I just ordered them, fingers crossed for a great fit. I can’t wait for fall—I want my cashmeres back in rotation.
I enjoy your emails. They are part of my daily routine. So many times they are spot on with what I am experiencing. So comforting I thank you. I really enjoy the try ons. Great inspiration and very helpful. I am preparing for knee replacement surgery. I have received texts from a laser provider. They explained it will increase healing, reduce downtime and relieve pain. It isn’t covered by insurance and it will be over an hour of driving for us to get there. Have you heard of it or know of anyone that has used it?
I have heard of that and wonder myself!
I enjoy your posts and appreciate your honest comments and product/clothing suggestions.
Keep up the good work!❤️
