Workout and Fitness Gear

A weighted vest is a great way to burn extra calories, build strength, support bone health, and improve posture. My son loves his so I’ve ordered one to wear on my daily walks. They come in various weights, so I suggest starting light and gradually increasing as you feel more comfortable.

A dumbbell set is a home workout must-have! These smaller weights are ideal for toning your arms during pilates, barre, or similar workouts. The included stand makes them compact and easy to store.

These ankle/wrist weights are a genius way to tone your arms and legs. Just strap them on while walking the dog or tidying up the house.

An Apple Watch makes it easy to keep track of your workouts, steps, heart rate, and even sleep. Pro tip: If you set it up with your phone provider, you can text or answer calls directly from your watch so you aren’t tethered to your phone all day long.

My joints absolutely cannot make it through a workout or a stretching session using a thin yoga mat, so I upgraded to this 2/5″ Thick Yoga Mat. It comes in lots of great colors, and it has a carrying strap so you can bring it to the gym, the park, etc.

Doing yoga and other floor workouts can be tough if you deal with wrist pain! These Wrist Buddy blocks take up to 60% of the pressure off your wrists, making them a game changer for anyone with arthritis, carpal tunnel, etc.

This handy gadget helps to keep your fingers and hands strong, which is great for maintaining grip strength as you age. It’s a simple way to support healthy joints and mobility in your daily routine that you can do while you’re watching an episode of a show or waiting for an appointment.

I’ve seen this cream popping up all over social media. It’s designed to enhance sweat production during workouts, which can help you shed excess water weight and maximize your exercise efforts.

I highly recommend an Oura Ring. I can honestly say that wearing mine has changed the way I approach self-care, rest, exercise, and my health. The amount of info it provides helps me know when I’m being wise with my health and when I’m not…which is invaluable to me. If you can’t try it on in person, the sizing kit is a must to get the right fit.
Beauty

This filtered showerhead filters out impurities in your water like chlorine, which helps keep your hair softer and your skin smoother. Reviews say installation is super simple and doesn’t require a plumber!

This deodorant is a clean beauty favorite. It’s free of all the bad stuff like aluminum and parabens, and it smells amazing too.
Supplements

If you struggle to get enough protein into your diet like I do, try incorporating a protein powder into your daily routine. This one is delicious! I used another powder for years, but once I tasted this…it’s all I use in my morning smoothie. I love that it doesn’t have an ingredient list as long as your arm. It’s a plant-based pea protein powder that has no soy, wheat, dairy, gluten, or stevia and is sweetened with organic monk fruit.

Collagen is a daily must-have for me because it helps support healthy hair, skin, nails, bones, joints, ligaments, and tendons. Since I don’t eat meat, I always purchase marine-derived collagen products. I switched to this brand because it’s made from non-GMO wild-caught cod and is highly bioavailable and digestible. I simply add one scoop to my morning smoothie or my afternoon tea. It dissolves easily and has no taste.

ARMRA Colostrum is packed with nutrients that support gut health, immunity, and overall wellness. It’s a great option if you’re looking to boost your body’s natural defenses and improve energy levels.

Electrolytes are essential for keeping your body hydrated, supporting muscle function, and maintaining energy levels. I haven’t tried this brand yet, but I know a few people who love it. It’s packed with 60+ trace minerals, making it stand out from others on the market.

My friend Jo-Lynne shared that she is using this creatine to help with recovery after her workouts and to try to build muscle mass.

Midlife hair loss is super common for women, and I’ve been dealing with thinning hair for many years now (you can read about my journey here). I was taking this Nutrafol for several years, but stopped last summer when I went on the oral Minoxydl. I’ve now gone back to taking it because it’s packed with vitamins, minerals, and natural ingredients like Maca, Ashwagandha, and Saw Palmetto in the right proportions to help tackle the root causes of thinning hair.
Misc. Healthy Aging Products

This book is like having a knowledgeable friend by your side through this life stage. It’s filled with real, down-to-earth advice and helpful facts that make understanding menopause a little easier, so you can approach it with confidence and clarity.
Are there any healthy aging products for women over 50 you would add to this list?

Great blog today, well yesterday as I didn’t get to read it until this morning. We have several of these books. My husband, also a doctor, loves the Attia books. Because of our age, 80s, and my health challenges, we are always adding new books on healthy living to our library. Thank you for so much information!
Great ideas. Try your Forme Power Bra for other things, like walking the dog, sitting at the computer for a long time, vacuuming, and other times you might be “hunching” your back and shoulders. I also tried wearing it on the plane when I was traveling for Thanksgiving.
Traveling is a great idea!! I mostly thought it would help while working in the computer.
This was a great post. There are so many products and ways to maintain good health as we age.
Love your posts Jennifer. I’ve learned quite a lot from you this year, and I thank you. It must be a lot of hard work putting everything together everyday!
I’ve purchased the Salt & Stone deodorant previously and really like the scent. It’s different, but it works!
This post is of particular interest; especially the filtering shower head! Who knew. I put it on my wish list for Christmas! Thanks so much Jennifer! Happy Holidays, and keep up the great work that you do to bring us the very best information!
I’m so glad you like it and it works for you. The older I get the less chemicals, etc I want to expose my body too. Happy Holidays Nancy, and thanks for being part of our community!!
This was a great post! I was so happy to see that my husband do almost all these things in one form or another. It’s so important as we age.
I started taking creatine to boost my workout give me a little more stamina, so I drank it with my last cup of coffee before working out and it made me anxious and jittery. I reduce the dose with no change in the effect. I’ll wait till after the holidays and start using it as a recovery and see if that eliminates that jittery anxious feeling.
Jittery is the last thing I would want to feel too. Go slow and maybe ask your doctor about it.
Hi Jennifer!
Nice post :). Have you used an Apple Watch? I’m interested in an Oura ring and I’m wondering how it compares to the Apple Watch in terms of data and feedback it provides. Thanks for your help!
PS Where in Hawaii did you stay? Doing Pilates classes while I’m there in March seems like an awesome idea! How did your daughter locate classes?
I do not have a watch and would not be comfortable sleeping in one which is why I bought the Oura ring. The amount of info it provides me is amazing! We were in Princeville in Kawaii. She just checked onling and found a wonderful instructor!
Thank you!!
Good morning! First, let me say that your post on Salt and Stone came at just the right time because I was unhappy with the otc deodorants so I ordered minis of the deodorant and three mini fragrances. Have been using them for about a week and I love them. Only thing to note is that with fragrance: it only takes a little.
Regarding today’s post: I’ll be 78 next month and have been on bio identical hormone therapy since about 2007. Can’t imagine being without it. No, insurance does not cover it, but it’s worth it.
Thank for sharing about the bio identical hormone therapy! I’ve read a bit about but need to learn more.
I love the Truvani chocolate protein powder. I blend it with coconut water and frozen raspberries. Simple and delish!
Coconut water is a great idea! They just came out with Chocolate Mint which is yummy!!
Great post with lots of helpful products. I don’t use the creatine but I do use Thorne vitamins and they are good!
I like Thorne too. Very high quality
What a great list! Thank you!
I use two additional items: stretchy bands to supplement my dumbbells and a foam roller to work out the kinks from my workout. The foam roller really helps me keep my back in shape.
Brilliant Terry! I have the bands but always forget to use them 😂 I need to leave them where I can see them.
Hi Jennifer,
What shampoo and conditioner do you use for thinning hair? What other products do you use and what is your hair routine?
I have recently switched to the Necessairé Rosemary shampoo and conditioner and really like it.
So much helpful information in today’s post!! The workout and fitness information is just what I needed!
Thank you Jennifer!
I’m really glad this was helpful!
“YOUNG FOREVER” by Dr. Mark Hyman is an excellent roadmap to healthy aging- much like Dale Bredesen – he focuses on practical measures to keep you vibrant and healthy as you age. Drawing on principals of functional medicine and lessons from the population of the blue zones – he shows how to make your health span align with your life span.
Thanks for the recommendation Rose! It sounds like a book I would love.
