Best Pajamas for Women Over 50: Soft, Breathable & Stylish Picks
A good night’s sleep is one of life’s little luxuries, and the older I get, the more important it becomes. Finding the perfect pair of pajamas can be a big help because uncomfortable jammies are awful. Comfort has turned into a non-negotiable for me for most things, including sleepwear. Whether you love a classic button-down set, a soft nightgown, or breathable loungewear, the right pajamas can make you feel both relaxed and put together. I’m sharing my top picks for the best pajamas for women over 50—because great sleepwear is an essential part of a well-styled life.

What to Look for in Pajamas for Women Over 50
1. Comfort is Key
Fabric is everything when it comes to sleepwear. Soft, breathable materials like cotton, bamboo, and silk help regulate temperature and feel amazing against the skin. No one wants to deal with scratchy seams or stiff fabrics when winding down for the evening.
2. Temperature Regulation
If you experience night sweats or just tend to run warm, lightweight, moisture-wicking fabrics can be a game changer. Bamboo and performance blends help keep you cool and comfortable all night long.
3. Ease of Movement
Our pajamas should never feel restrictive. Whether you prefer a flowy nightgown or relaxed-fit pajama pants, look for styles that allow easy movement so you’re not tossing and turning uncomfortably.
4. Stylish Yet Practical
Feeling good in what you wear doesn’t stop at bedtime. There’s something to be said for chic, well-made sleepwear that looks as lovely as it feels. Feminine prints, elegant trims, and timeless silhouettes make a world of difference.
5. Easy Care
We all love the idea of silk pajamas, but who has time for high-maintenance fabrics? Look for styles that are machine washable and hold up well after repeated laundering. Quince has a line of washable silk pajamas that are worth a try. I love my other washable silk pieces from them.
The Best Pajama Fabrics for Women Over 50
1. Cotton
Cotton pajamas are a classic choice for good reason. They’re breathable, soft, and easy to care for.
2. Bamboo
Bamboo is naturally moisture-wicking and incredibly soft. If you’re prone to overheating, this is a must-try.
3. Silk
Silk pajamas add a luxurious touch, and they do a fantastic job of keeping you warm in winter and cool in summer. Just be mindful of the care instructions!
4. Modal
Modal has the feel of silk without the fuss. It’s silky smooth, highly breathable, and resists shrinking or pilling.

These Eberjay Cropped modal pajamas have quickly won the award for my favorite pair of pajamas! I love them so much that I now own them in both cropped and full-length styles.
5. Flannel
If you live in a colder climate or just love the feeling of being extra cozy, flannel pajamas are the perfect cold-weather option.

A timeless pajama set feels polished and elegant. Brands like Soma, Eberjey, and Nordstrom’s Moonlight Pajamas get it right with flattering, comfortable cuts.

Do you have a favorite pair of pajamas?

I find I need a pajama bottom in a jogger style, so they stay in place. I have two pairs from athleta that work, one red and one black, with matching tops. I mix and match them. I find even loose shorts twist around too much and it’s hard to get comfortable.
I stopped sleeping nude after I had children because there was always the chance someone would have a nightmare or something and I’d have to get up for them in the middle of the night!
Lol, same!
I have never worn pajamas or a nightie ever (except in hospital) in my adult life. My husband and I sleep nude, we are now in our 70’s. Now that is comfort, a feather doona, cotton sheets and the window open (we do live remote, so no prying eyes), we do close the window in winter!

The pjs featured are all stylish and look comfortable, but not for me. I sleep naked, winter and summer.
Jennifer the Eberjey pj say hand wash only. Is that what you do?
I toss mine in the washer and drier and have no problem
I swear by jjill jams.
The very best pajamas I have ever had are from This is J (a Canadian company). They are made from bamboo, have every style you can imagine, fun prints, and excellent quality. I have several pairs and styles and they last forever and are great in every season. Available online only at thisisj.com. I highly recommend.
Thanks for the recommendation Sandee. I’ll check them out
Beautiful pajama sets. I have a few pairs but never think to use them..Oversize t-shirts or a tank top has been my go to sleepwear for years……I do love a terry robe in the morning though…..
I’m with you in the terry robe department
Flannel pajamas from LL Bean and Landsend for cold winter nights and knit pajamas from Landsend for right now, transition. I also have some really old knit long bottoms in grey that I bought from JCP in Liz Claiborne and still wear with a short sleeve tee in the summer. Comfortable is key in pajamas as well as machine washable and machine dry low.
I agree Sydney. I need easy care in my jammies
The Cool Nights brand at Soma have been the only ones I’ve worn….for at least a decade, maybe longer. I was “blessed” with ovaries that just refused to quit…..menopause was a 20 year journey. (sigh). I have bought these Cool Nights for all our daughters when they reached that “magic age” and they swear by them too. Absolutely The Best!!
I agree, they are very nice
I love Eileen Fisher organic cotton pajamas. Very comfortable and I hang them to dry
I’m going to try them. I just discovered them!
I really like that you found petite pajamas. I gave up on pajamas because they were always too long. I just wear lounge wear before bed and again in the morning. I love to have a really comfy robe.
Hi Jennifer,
Thanks for the well-research post. I look forward to reading your content every morning!
I found these Asian Wrap Organic Cotton Pajamas from Garnett Hill a few years ago and have them in every style! They have no buttons, no collar, nothing to bunch or scratch, and the prints are beautiful! Plus they wash and dry without any fading. I smile every time I put them on!
Cheers!
Laura
They sound great!
Great post, Jennifer! Pajamas truly do make all the difference in how one sleeps. Waking up all sweaty just isn’t fun! Thanks for the suggestions!
Exactly! And I hate being too cold as well
