Weekend Reading 03.08.25

The sun is shining, and I’m excited for spring! I’ve got cotton poplin and, quite possibly, a casual dress on my radar. A dress of any kind is not my norm, but I believe an evolving style recipe keeps things fun and prevents stagnation.

These days, my outfits seem to either include a brooch or a scarf. The outfit above contained both, but the lapel wasn’t wide enough for my bee brooch, so I simply pinned it on the top of my cuff. Brooches can be pinned in innumerable places, so long as they’re not where you might have to lean against or sit on them 😉.

  1. Is your bee broach the charcoal bee? I ask as it looks more like the antique brass version. Monitors and cell phones can alter colors so much! Thanks!

    1. I have the Charcoal with Pink, Snorkel Blue, and Celadon with Light Iridescent Sapphire Eyes

  2. So glad you posted the picture of your new bee broach. I have always admired it and didn’t know where you found it until your February comment. Now it’s in my own cart. I must say your photo doesn’t look like the catalogue version, so I am glad you posted it. Looking forward to receiving it!

    1. It’s really a fun brooch

  3. This works for me so hoping you have success with it too. I put the “pin” of the brooch through the fabric and out again but leave a small space just large enough to put a silicone earring stopper on the pin just before putting the end of the pin into the latch. I hope that was clear….

    1. You are brilliant! Thank you so much!

Where can I find the shoes you’re wearing?

Happy Saturday, Jennifer! I hope you are enjoying your weekend. I am sitting here watching it SNOW here in Texas! And it was only a couple of weeks ago that we had a day over 90 degrees. Yikes!
I have a question for you. I have long wanted one of those Frank and Eileen peacoats and am just about ready to pull the trigger. But now I am confused because I also like the sweatshirt blazer you are wearing in today’s post. Which, in your opinion, is more versatile? I am also torn between navy and white. Your thoughts?

    1. The navy is dark enough to appear black and probably more timeless. In CA the white is great year round. They’re quite different because the peacoat closes and the blazer does not. They really have a different vibe. The blazer is more versitile for my climate

Happy International Women’s Day to you Jennifer & all your followers!
Best wishes to each & everyone of you!

  7. I saw an adorable bee brooch/pin in the J Jill catalog along with a couple others. I am going to order one. Your post gave me the encouragement I need!

  8. My high school graduation dress was white eyelet with a pale blue ribbon tied around my then 19” waist. Now my waist is 35”! I loved that dress and it would be wearable today. I loved that the blue eyelet dress is lined. Beautiful. I can’t wear olive green either. I’m surprised that skirt doesn’t come in other colors for our palette. It is very expensive and gathered skirts are not that hard to make. I used to make all of mine in the 1950s. Yes, I’m that old!

Sometimes I leave a comment late in the day. Do you answer those and how do I read them?

    1. Comments are at the bopttom of each post and yes, I answer them.

Your bee brooch is adorable and I love the colors in it. I also love the cuff placement. Isn’t it fun to do unexpected things with jewelry? I like wearing one of my vintage necklaces twisted around a narrow headband to keep my bangs and front layers that I’m growing out from falling into my face. After going through today’s post and links I looked at some of the older suggested blog posts that were at the bottom of the screen and just finished the one about what frumpy looks like. I found the comments quite interesting and started considering what I thought looked frumpy on me. I quickly realized that despite the closet clear out I did at New Year’s I still have several items hanging there that I think make me look frumpy. This led to asking myself why I still had those pieces. I found that each and every one had a memory or a powerful emotion tied to it. As an example, one is a sweater that belonged to my late mother and looked wonderful on her. But now it’s colors are faded and the white is now more of a gray. It feels like she is hugging me when I wear it, but it also ticks most of my boxes that say “I look frumpy” (faded or gray tinted colors, wide rounded and gathered necklines, over-sized, shapeless, and hems hitting at the widest spots on my hips, thighs and calves). It’s not old enough to look “vintage” but definitely looks “out of fashion” and “dated”. I don’t want to get rid of these pieces because of the emotional connections, but they are taking up limited closet space and I’m no longer comfortable wearing them where they can be seen by others. I’m sure I can’t be the only woman who has this issue, particularly with items we own that belonged to someone we loved that is no longer with us. Would you perhaps address the issue of emotional attachment in a future blog post? Thank you.

    1. What about cutting a small piece of the fabric and put it in a frame along with a photo of your mom. Since it feels like a hug from her, you may want to to keep it and only wear it at home. I carry a tiny piece of wood in my makeup bag (2″ long) that is from a screened porch my dad made with me over 35 years ago. It may seem silly, but it means a lot to me.

  11. Good Morning Jennifer. I’ve become a sneaker “fool”. Please don’t tempt me with more. Love those stretch sneakers. And I still want to buy the Eileen Fisher stretch booties. With Spring around the corner I’m hoping those booties will go on sale again.

    1. I’m wishing I bought a second pair of those bootie’s because I wear them so often! I’m watching for the sale too
