I’ve done it too — standing in a fitting room, imagining some future version of myself who’s far more social than reality would suggest.
There’s nothing wrong with aspiration. But if most of what’s hanging in your closet is waiting for a “someday,” you end up short on clothes that work for your real, everyday life. That’s when getting dressed starts to feel complicated…not because you lack options, but because they don’t fit the life you’re actually living.

Just the other day I was going through my closet, my weight is fluctuating between small and medium (I stopped smoking back in June) and I stated to really sort the two different sizes to see exactly what I have. I have more than enough, actually I’m putting together many items that can be resale or donated. Just to clear out and have a better view of what I like and actually reach for either every day or once a week.

I think one other thing can sabotage wardrobes for some women. You would not suffer this problem, but I am guessing that there are quite a few women in this community who have bought clothes because an influencer recommended them. The last time I did this was several years ago now, and it was not a total mistake, but I ended up with a long line sweater that I wear only infrequently.

Holy cow! I saw myself in several items listed! I definitely shop for size. If the number is larger than “my” size, I won’t buy it. I probably have 10 black sweaters. Somehow I’ve convinced myself they all serve a purpose and go best with a particular outfit. Online shopping gives me a lift and it’s so easy since my computer has my credit card saved. The only other thing I’ve noticed at age 65 is that now that I’ve lost about 15 pounds I don’t trust myself and I’ve bought sizes that are actually a little too big and they end up hanging in my closet as much as the too small sizes did in the past. Yep, guilty of some of these! I live in predominately a cold climate, and we might have a few months of hot summer but even then most mornings require a jacket. I am still guilty of overshopping for summery clothes, and end up having so many that maybe get worn once.

Wow, Jennifer! You nailed this one! I was a dental hygienist for 43 years and I pretty much lived in scrubs. When I retired, I guess I thought I was going to be a CEO of some company, and bought a lot of crispy shirts, blazers, and nice pants. My REAL life was going to 33 grand children’s games or babysitting the younger ones! I live in nice jeans and a few sweaters and coats. I did buy a crinkle dress on sale at Eileen Fisher’s because I loved the blue one you wore to a wedding. I bought the pink one “in case there’s a wedding”. Ha–there are two grandkids getting married this spring, so all is not lost.
I love this Judy! After the wedding wear that pink dress with white tennies and a denim jacket or tie one of those white shirts at the waist without buttoning it!

Great post, I especially what you said about what size we wear.
I will admit I have a few things that are waiting for an event. I felt the need to do this because I’ve been caught without something appropriate to wear at the last minute. One item is a beautiful beaded skirt I fell in love with at Soft Surroundings. It’s still waiting but I enjoy looking at it and being hopeful!
My rules:
I absolutely must dress for my body type. That eliminates a lot of clothing items immediately. Good.
Full-length pants work best for my proportions. In years when cropped lengths dominate, I look for tall sizes that bring them to my perfect inseam length. Sometimes the style will look off and should stay in the store but more often this approach works for me.
High-waisted pants only. Anything else will be uncomfortable because I have a long torso and a high waist plus a pear shape. No thanks to mid-rise. High-waisted pants don’t look like high-waisted pants on my body because my body is long. You do you, friends!
My winter clothes tend to fit looser because I wear layers underneath them to keep warm.
Colours? Yes, please. Colours bring me to my happy place because I have a spring complexion. Winter clothes are often disappointing because the colours don’t suit me. I don’t want clothes that make me look sad.
Body changes? Yes, they happen and when they do, it’s time for a wardrobe edit. I don’t want to admit that I have shoes I cannot wear, but c’est la vie.
