Fall Fashion Color Trends On My Radar

We still have lots of warm weather ahead of us, but I’m already getting excited for fall. It’s my favorite time to layer on accessories and create a cozy vibe with my clothes. This year’s fall fashion color trends are a mix of the usual cozy fall hues with some fresh, unexpected shades tossed in to shake things up.

Greens

Green is everywhere for fall this year, and it’s not just the usual olive we’re used to seeing…although there is plenty of that, too. Even Pantone highlighted two standout greens in their fall colors list: Fern, a soft, warm-based, leafy green, and Aventurine, a cool, teal-toned hue. To dabble in this trend, choose a green with an undertone that flatters your personal coloring in an intensity that works with your personal contrast level.

Aventurine reminds me of this Aegean color from Eileen Fisher that I’ve been loving lately. It’s a cool-toned green that feels fresh and easy to wear with anything. If you’re someone who looks better in cooler colors, there will be lots of options this fall.

Green Items I’m Loving for Fall:

Reds and Plums

Red continues to be a major color for fall. The options have expanded to include all versions of merlot, wine, burgundy, and plum. I always recommend stocking up on colors you love while they’re trending because that’s when you’ll find the most plentiful selection. I’m a neutral lover by nature, but I can’t resist adding colors to my wardrobe that pop against my coloring.

What I love about this season’s reds and plums is that there’s a shade to flatter every complexion. I find that true red can be a bit harsh on me, so I lean towards cooler ruby and plum tones. If you aren’t sure which colors you should be reaching for, you may enjoy this post on personal color analysis.

Chocolate Brown

From rich chocolate to creamy caramel, all shades of brown will be plentiful this fall. Deep brown is a great choice for adding some contrast to your fall outfits without the harshness of black. I love the way chocolate coordinates with most other shades, including black.

Shop Chocolate Browns:

Soft Blues

Soft blue is a refreshing addition to fall fashion, especially for those who don’t wear the season’s usual warm tones. This blue pairs beautifully with other autumn colors like chocolate or camel, making it easy to mix with your favorite fall boots, handbags, belts, etc.

For this look, I combined a soft blue shirtdress with chocolate sandals, a slouchy bag, a silk neck scarf, and silver earrings.

Shop Soft Blues:

I live in neutrals like greige, ecru, beige, tan, and cream year-round, but especially when sweater season rolls around. These versatile colors make putting together outfits a breeze and are perfect for endless mixing and matching. I’m a firm believer in purchasing your investment pieces in neutral shades, which give them staying power for the long term. Neutrals create the perfect foundation, letting you introduce pops of color or personality with a vibrant scarf, a chic patterned handbag, or playful shoes.

  2. Great colors for fall. I love browns, greens and the cool blue is beautiful.

  3. I’m excited to find more red pieces this year. I like a true red.
I’m also on the hunt for a pair of chocolate brown booties in leather with a low heel. I have a pair in suede but they feel more casual.

    1. There should be lots of chocolate to choose from.

  4. Like the like blue and brown together. We are over 100 here in the Dallas area. I can’t wait for cooler weather. I think I may buy me a red purse for fall, for a pop of color.

    1. Red is so fun to wear with everything!

  5. I don’t wear much green. Love burgundy, beiges, and the light blue.
You, however, look terrific in everything!

  6. Only the blue family works with my coloring. Even as a young child, I never liked red or orange or most yellows. Cool colors and neutrals are my go to with my jeans 6 months of the year. I love the loser fitting trouser jeans from Chicos. They fit my thickened middle and are comfortable to sit down in for extended periods of time. Unfortunately, I can’t wear JJill or Talbots pants and jeans as the waist is just too small and my hips and thighs are slim. Baggy isn’t my thing. No tailor available here in my rural small town.

  7. Well, first of all, your new hair cut looks so nice! So fresh and flattering!
All shades of green and that chocolate brown really appeal to me. I used to always have a red sweater on hand. Now, the winter whites are finding their way in my wardrobe. That’s a pretty huge swing!

    1. Our tastes change along with our coloring. Red is appealing to me more but I still feel overwhelmed when I wear it.

  8. Your site is always worth waiting for..thanks

  9. I really like all these colors for fall. I can’t wait for my favorite season. It’s always beautiful here in the PNW.

I love these colors that are trending for fall! And one of my all time favorite combinations is the light blue/chocolate brown. Once upon a very long time ago I had a much-beloved dress that was light blue linen trimmed with a chocolate brown border at the neckline and down the front of the bodice. It was one of those pieces that made me feel oh-so-special everytime I wore it. I am glad to see this color combo make a return.

    1. It’s a really pretty combo!

  11. Slightly cooler temps have begun to arrive here in the Northeast, and I couldn’t be happier! I love rich fall colors. I’ll be adding some deep reds for sure. I do like chocolate brown too, but it doesn’t look good on me. Maybe a pair of brown shoes.

    1. That would be a great place to add brown…far from your complexion

  12. Catherine says:

I love red, plum. I will be stocking up because the shades that love me aren’t always available. I just bought a blue trench coat. I am bored with all the black coats, I love the idea of pairing with a brown scarf. Thanks

  13. The new Talbots collection has two colorful casual jackets that I am considering: purple thistle and burgundy berry in their AirKnit stretch jackets. Both colors compliment my hair and complexion, so I may need to buy both of them!

    1. That a great collection! I love the look of their brown too.

    2. Thanks for a great post on colors today. I will definitely study more about the personal color analysis. I like the pale blue, shades of merlot, plum. I like the browns and caramels but will have to wear them for slacks or shoes. Just can’t get into the greens. Thanks for getting me to find the best shades of the colors I like to wear.

  14. Love the clothes, the colors…..especially the greens. Normally I’m a white and black person, when it comes to clothes but these greens and the deep wine makes me want to venture out of my comfort zone…love your hair, looks great! Can’t wait for fall……

    1. I’m excited to try some of these greens.
