The Modern Way To Wear Leggings After 50 In 2025
Let’s put this old myth to bed right now: leggings are not dead, and yes, women over 50 can absolutely wear them. In fact, they’re one of the most versatile and comfortable wardrobe essentials for women living modern, casual lifestyles. The key is knowing how to wear leggings over 50 in a way that feels chic, flattering, and appropriate…and that’s exactly what we’re diving into today.

Do Leggings Still Look Stylish After 50?
Without a doubt! Leggings have come a long way since their streetwear heyday in the ’70s and ’80s. Today’s styles are more sophisticated, structured, and wearable than ever. Many now mimic the look of jeans (jeggings), with refined fabrics and elevated finishes that make them suitable for everyday wear…even for women in their 60s and beyond.

So, can you still wear leggings over 50? Absolutely. Can you wear leggings and look polished? 100%. Should you wear leggings? If they’re comfortable and flattering, then yes, go for it!
Leggings Style That Actually Works After Fifty
Let’s start with the most critical element, the fabric.
The Best Fabric For Leggings That Don’t Show Everything
If you’ve ever cringed at the sight of someone wearing sheer, footless tights as leggings, you’re not alone. That’s not the look we’re after. The best leggings for older women are thick, opaque, and offer substantial stretch without becoming see-through. Look for:
- Heavyweight Ponte Knit – Structured and polished.
- Faux Suede – Soft and elevated, perfect for fall and winter.
- Jeggings (denim leggings) – A great everyday alternative to jeans.
- Velvet – Luxe, cozy, and surprisingly versatile.
- Faux Leather – Yes, really. With the right fit, these can be fabulously chic and not at all “too young.”
Pro tip: Fabrics with a four-way stretch and a high Lycra or Spandex content will maintain their shape better and offer a more flattering fit. Opt for darker colors like black, navy, or deep charcoal for the most slimming and versatile look.

Finding the Right Leggings Fit After 50 (Without Feeling Squeezed)
Leggings should hug your body comfortably, not strangle it. If your leggings feel like sausage casings, go up a size. You’ll look more put-together and feel a whole lot better.
Look for:
- High-rise waistbands that don’t roll down.
- Wide, flat waistbands that smooth the tummy.
- No-see-through coverage for peace of mind.
What to Wear On Top with Leggings Over 50
No matter how fit you are, coverage is key. The golden rule is that your top should cover your crotch and backside. Most women feel more confident this way because it balances proportions and makes the look feel intentional.

Here’s what works best:
- Tunic-length sweaters with shape (not boxy!)
- Long blazers for a polished finish
- Shirt dresses or long button-front blouses
- Knee-length cardigans layered over fingertip-length tops
- Short dresses that feel a tad too short on their own
Look for tops that gently skim your shape. You want length, not bulk. Side slits help with movement and keep the silhouette lean. And beware of chunky knits that can throw your proportions out of balance.
Real Life Outfit Ideas With Leggings After 50
Here’s how you can actually wear leggings day to day:
- Travel Days – Ponte leggings with a lightweight tunic, long cardigan, and slip-on sneakers. Add a crossbody bag and you’re comfortable yet polished enough to go straight from plane to dinner.
- Weekend Errands – Black leggings, a denim shirt, ballet flats, and a scarf or structured tote. Casual but pulled together.
- Lunch With Friends – Faux suede leggings, a tunic blouse, loafers, and statement earrings. Relaxed but intentional.
- At-Home Comfort – Super-stretch leggings with a drapey sweater. Add earrings and a neat top underneath for instant Zoom-readiness.
- Dinner Out – Faux leather leggings with a silky blouse, long blazer, ankle boots, and a clutch. Chic without sacrificing comfort.

The Best Shoes to Wear With Leggings Over 50
Your shoes can make or break your leggings outfit. Here are some of the best options for mature women:
- Ballet flats – Think Audrey Hepburn—always timeless. Perfect for errands with black leggings and a denim shirt.
- Low-heeled shoes or sandals – Add sophistication without looking overdone. Try them with ponte leggings and a tunic.
- Ankle booties – Great for fall and winter. They look sharp with faux leather leggings and a blazer.
- Knee-high or riding boots – Classic and elongating, especially when matched to the color of your leggings.
Skip the stilettos. They rarely complement leggings and can veer into “trying too hard” territory.

Absolutely enjoyed your fashion tips!! You gave me inspiration.
Your article in leggings after 50 was so insightful.! My Mama is 87 and has finally taken a liking to leggings…I can’t wait for her to read your article! !
I’m 77 and wear leggings regularly. They are always high waisted to avoid the “pillow with a string around it” look, which can occur even if you are perfectly toned. Always thick ponte, velvet, or thick cotton blend to avoid showing every little lump or bump from a lifetime lived in this skin, or cellulite. Fleecy or terry lined leggings are nice and cozy in the cold winters. My leggings are all ankle length because to me, they look better than capri anything. I wear slip on style tennis shoes or ballet flats when it’s nice out, and boots when it’s not. Leggins are part of my life, at least 3-4 times a week. I think leggings must be paired with something that comes down to at least the top of the thigh in front, as a matter of basic modesty. They should fit, not too tight and if I have to pick between tight and loose, I select on the loose side. I like Shapermint leggings and Eileen Fisher High Waisted Leggins. Kindred Bravely makes a wonderful over the bump maternity legging that is perfect for anyone with a distinct apple shaped middle, and you don’t have to be in maternity clothes to find them perfect.
Love my leggings! Wear mine as you have styled often this time of year! Im 67! You look terrific as always!
My mother is 71 and I would love to dress her up in a pair of nice comfortable leggings. Her issue is, she lost 20 lbs and now has loose skin on top of cellulite. The leggings we have previously tried shows her cellulite. She is very self conscious of her cellulite. Can someone recommend leggings that are thick and comfortable. Than you.
Look for ones made from ponte fabric. J. Jill has some. They are much thicker
Sam’s Club has really nice and thick leggings which I wear daily; have all their colors in my drawer.
Try Shapermint high waisted leggings with or without pockets. (Not their shaping leggings style as they are a much thinner fabric.) Try Eileen Fisher High Waisted Leggings especially those with brushed terry lining. Both of these fit well if you use their size charts. Any box store or lower price fleece lined legging but make sure they are not tight . All these will conceal cellulite and loose skin.
Hi, I am a newbie here. I love, LOVE leggings! NO contortions anymore to put the proper pantyhose on. NEVER again! (Hitting 86 soon, but in good shape , size 6) I have a few just for working/cleaning in the house, but also have several looking like regular pants. Heavier fabric, nice fabric patterns.
I really like all your comments, realistic, but not snarky. classy!
Welcome!
I love wearing leggings, and have no qualms about my age (70’s) and wearing them. I do adhere to wearing a top that comes down far enough to cover the rear and the crotch area. I also wear them with all the style of shoes you suggest. They are just too comfortable to give up! The airports and anywhere it seems now days, I see women who really should not be wearing them. They are so tight and they show everything. Not a good look. Hue is good, so are Susan Graver and Women with Control, both from QVC.
Having a very long torso and healthy backside I have never felt comfortable in strict leggings even for the gym i need ones that are bootcut or flare. When you have the correct body type they look great, just not for me and thats fine as there are plenty of other looks that are. Thats the great thing there is something for everyone and certain things I am very comfortable on just passing on
I love leggings for my casual, stay at home caregiver life. I do think there is a difference between leggings for the gym and leggings to wear in public. I try not to wear my gym leggings in public. I believe leggings versus activewear serve two different purposes and I prefer different qualities for those purposes. I would love suggestions of tunics or shorter dresses that look good with leggings. Thank you for the post.
58 years old here, I wear leggings most days of the week, having one side of my body paralyzed due to a stroke, I favor pull up garments over zíper and buttons. I try to dress them up a bit so they don’t look like I just walk out of the gym, and prefer darker colors for a more flattering look, sometimes I’d wear a blazer or jacket that not quite cover front and back but I always wear full coverage undies underneath.
All I know is I’m replacing anything “skinny fit”. I just don’t find them comfortable or flattering. Would love to find perfectly fitting trousers. Always a chic look.
I love that look too but I don’t want extra bulk, so I’ll keep you posted.
I wear leggings in our Florida winter with a long sweater. But only for quick errands. Never wear them in summer, way too hot here!
I only wore leggings to the gym with a long top. I’ve never worn them as pants. I find it’s just as easy to put on a nice pair of jeans.
Leggings look good with tops that cover the backside. I wear leggings with thick material usually in black. I like them because they are so comfortable, and no baggey knees . Leggings will go with all types of shoes as well. I am average weight and 5″2″. I am over 65. I wear what makes me feel and look good. I google online to get ideas on how to put tops and pants together.
Bravo wearing what makes you look and feel good!
