Is a Capsule Wardrobe Right For You?
Have you ever wondered if a capsule wardrobe is right for you? In our quest to hone our signature style, some women adore the thought of a capsule wardrobe and others feel they are boring. Let’s chat about it today; plus, I’m sharing a few outfits I wore last week.
A capsule wardrobe is a curated collection of versatile, timeless pieces that can be mixed and matched to create multiple outfits. Many women find a capsule wardrobe liberating because it simplifies their lives. With fewer choices, decision fatigue is reduced, making it easier to get dressed each day. A capsule wardrobe allows you to focus on quality over quantity and curbs impulse buying. It also saves space and reduces clutter. It’s a minimalist approach that offers a sense of control over your wardrobe and avoids the endless cycle of fashion trends.
On the other hand, many women believe capsule wardrobes feel limiting, and their simplicity can stifle their creativity. The limited variety begins to feel repetitive and monotonous. Women with creative or eclectic styles also find it challenging to streamline their wardrobe without losing the uniqueness that makes their outfits feel personal and exciting. Capsule wardrobes are often focused on neutral colors and classic styles to ensure versatility, which doesn’t appeal to women who love bold patterns, bright colors, or statement pieces.
A Few Outfits I Wore Last Week

FASHION SNEAKERS (other option) / SHOULDER BAG
For a busy day racing around town…picking up mail at my PO Box, going to the grocery store, and then standing in line at the post office…I wore this sweater, which was one of my favorite purchases last year. It’s a machine-washable wool/cashmere blend that is breathable and super soft. It’s currently marked way down and comes in 4 colors. The turtleneck is quite loose, and I wanted to jazz it up a bit, so I pulled the neck off center and added a tiny Bee pin in the same rose gold as my simple hoop earrings.
I wore some taupe stretch pants (alternative) and my comfy Rag & Bone fashion sneakers (alternative). My taupe Vancouver Bag coordinated well because of its gold trim, which I love to wear as a crossbody for hands-free convenience.

On this day, I met a couple of pals for some business networking, then went on to Cost-co. I wore my Talbots perfect turtleneck and Pistola straight-leg jeans. I needed a but of warmth so I added my faux fur vest (similar). The vest has no closure so I belted it to keep it in place and give it some shape. I wore my comfy knit sock booties, Lagos silver necklace and added a brooch to the vest (similar).
Did belting the vest make me appear larger than I am? Probably, but I liked the look and, more importantly, the cozy feel of it belted. I believe it’s important for us to enjoy how our clothes feel, even if their appearance breaks some “rules”.

Friday felt chilly, so I wore layers that I could remove as the day wore on. I started with a Nic+Zoe long-sleeve tee in a soft green color, layered on my gray Quince cashmere hoodie, and then my navy Frank and Eileen sweatshirt blazer. I wore my Talbots barely boot jeans and some comfy suede loafers (similar). I’m also wearing the earrings my husband gave me for Christmas and a silver link necklace (similar) that I found at an art show last summer.

I was headed out for a dressing room try-on, which always involves a lot of walking, so I wore super comfy driving loafers (similar). Brooches are back in a big way, and I find them so easy to add to any outfit. I pinned this silver brooch onto a leopard jacket I’ve had in my wardrobe for longer than I can remember. I wore it over my trusty black Talbots turtleneck and Loft charcoal straight-leg corduroy pants (marked way down). I wore my simple pearl studs because earrings can get in the way when pulling things on and off over my head. I added a simple black belt because belt loops look unfinished without one.
Now that I’ve shared a few outfits I wore last week let’s talk about how you’re building your signature style. Are you a capsule wardrobe devotee, or do you find them limiting? I use a capsule wardrobe for travel but I’m not a dedicated user of one at home. I’d love to hear your thoughts and find out which approach to dressing you prefer.
Thanks for reading and be sure to wear what makes you feel confident.

it really helps me in shopping to see your posts-i can see how clothes look on-and you do a great job! Thanks!
Jennifer, I love how you added a pin to your turtle neck sweater. I would never have thought to do that. It really completes the look.

As for capsule wardrobes, I see their appeal and use them for travel…..but not at home. To me, certain colors are either urban or country, and certain times of year (spring, fall). So when I travel, i choose a color combo (no more than 4) that suits the season and the locale (urban, rural or cruise). Urban (NYC, Paris) typically black, khaki, white, and either fuchsia or pink, depending on season. Rural (CA wine country) might be olive, khaki, cream, and coral or gold depending on if it’s spring or fall. Cruise is always navy, khaki, white or cream and either red or coral.
Great point about the location
Sorry you have to deal with those nasty people! And thanks for not letting their remarks make it through. Capsule wardrobe is not for me. I enjoy the selection and outfit building process every day. Also in Colorado the climate plays a part in daily clothing choices! 🙂
I love all your outfits. I would like to wear every one. I try to stick to basics which can be pretty boring at times. Trying to find small petite clothing is challenging. I end up wearing just what I can find that fits. But the worst problem lately is if I’m shopping I have to wear tennis shoes so I always look more casual then I would like. I really like that you added brooches and belts. That’s something I could definitely do.
Many of us are wearing sneakers so you’re right in style. Look for modern shaped ones if they’re comfy.
Bottom line: I just like clothes, and couldn’t do a capsule wardrobe. I too use them for travel, and after a couple of weeks long for some change, especially in accessories. Fortunately, jewelry and scarves take up little room, and give a lot of personality to an outfit, so if I ever did cut down my closet, I would likely continue to splurge in that area. I might be able to do a clothing capsule, if I gave myself “permission” to use all of my accessories. One thing I do that is perhaps capsule-esque is to find something in my closet I haven’t worn enough and hang it on a hook on my closet door. For a couple of weeks, I challenge myself to see how many ways I can wear it. If at the end of two weeks, I still don’t feel anything for it, it informs my decision to purge it. You do a great job, Jennifer. Your blog is one of my favorites!
I think accessories shouldn’t count in a capsule wardrobe, but maybe that’s just me 🙂
I would wear all of those outfits! Very much my style! As for those who get their kicks by posting nasty or negative comments, shame on them. I’m so glad you’re making this a safe place for women of all types, sizes, and shapes.
Hi Jennifer: I don’t know what people are saying and don’t want to know; unless it’s informative and happy thoughts. You have a wonderful biog and I have learned and bought many items you have worn. I like your try ons the best, that being said; I have tried and bought some of your beauty products you have recommended… So hang on there…we love you.
You’re sweet. Thank you
Good Morning Jennifer!
I enjoy your posts and have used several of your ideas especially for travel. I enjoy seeing the charm necklaces and I still love my charm bracelet! With jewelry in mind, would you consider doing a post on jewelry storage?
This could be helpful as many of us, I’m sure, have inherited lovely pieces and also have our own collections.Thank you for considering this idea.
I’m loving the charm necklaces and we can make our own simply by adding things to a chain we own!
I love your blog and get many new ideas that I wouldn’t think of doing. I purchase many items you show, including clothes, books, skincare, etc. Hard to imagine people being negative on your blog but don’t take it to heart. Glad you block them. You are my favorite source for inspiration and information. Love you!
Thank you!
I try to use a travel capsule when packing for a trip, but not at home. I think it would be too limiting for me. Since I’m retired, I’m pretty much a jeans girl and enjoy having various style tops to wear with. I’m so happy to see that charms are a “thing”! I just bought 3 tiny ones to wear on a chain I already had. I’m trying to wear a piece of jewelry everyday day, even when I’m home. It’s really does add a bit of interest to an outfit.
I just took out my old charm bracelet and my mom’s charm necklace!! Excited to wear them.
I like the idea of a capsule wardrobe for its simplicity but I only do it for travel. Just canceled a trip to Palm Springs due to concerns about the fires as well as overcrowding and I’m disappointed that all the great outfits I planned won’t leave home this week!
A travel capsule (navy with accents) serves me very well. Dress up or down, pack warmer or cooler things, or plan layers for temp variations. We spent 3 weeks in Patagonia including iguazu falls extension (mountains & glaciers and subtropical waterfall). and I travelled with my navy capsule and wore individual items. Even my navy long sleeve gauze dress worked with tights and jacket. A dark color is very flexible. 3 weeks with a 19” roll aboard and a longchamp tote. Worked perfectly
Bravo Teresa!
Good morning
Ugh re the nasty comments, so unnecessary and also uninteresting…if only they realized!!! 🙂 Unfortunately more work for you to edit out.
Thank you for sharing your outfits, you look great. I did like the faux fur vest and no! belting did not make you look large. I have often thought about adding a belt but have not for similar reasons. I will give it a go.
Have a great week.
Try it!! Happy Monday Dianne
I think you look amazing in the faux fur vest. You look very trim and fit in it.
Thanks. The belt was a fun addition.
I’m sorry for the ugly comments. It is very cruel the way some use these forums as a way to criticize. I know you spend a lot of time thinking about ways to help women and I appreciate it. You looked very stylish in your outfits last week! Your ideas and choices always give me new ideas. I worked 10 years at Steinmart and at Chicos so I love clothes and new ideas. Thank you for all the help and ideas for us women!
Although in theory I like the idea of a capsule wardrobe, I would find it too restrictive. I think what I have is a few mini capsules though, as certain tops only go with specific bottoms due to shape, length or colour. I also like adding unique pieces.
Good morning, Jennifer. You look great in all of these casual outfits. Is it my imagination, but do we all look younger when we wear casual outfits rather than dressier ones? As for capsule, I don’t seem to have the discipline for creating capsule outfits. I like buying clothes and creating new outfits too much! Finally, sorry you have had to contend with ugly comments from some people. It is a sign of our changing culture, I think. Too bad. Have a wonderful day.
Interesting observation, Bea! I think we look more current in elevated casual outfits which translates to modern and “with-it” which looks fresh and younger.
Jennifer – just curious as to whether you think gold or silver jewelry works better for a blue-eyed, white-haired senior….I’ve read that silver earrings don’t show as well with white hair and that gold is better. Wondering what you think as I tend to wear more silver jewelry but I love gold jewelry and pearls!
Wear what you love. I look better with silver but I may not have your coloring
I only use a capsule wardrobe when traveling. I usually plan my outfits for a week based on my schedule. I set them up with a few option B’s available if I don’t feel like wearing the outfit I planned or it’s a ‘fat’ day. That system worked well for me when I worked and it continues in retirement. I do plan my accessories for each outfit in a bundle concept and have those ready as well. I wear more if my clothes this way and it’s a satisfying activity for me.
That’s sounds like a great method
I organized my closet into capsules a few weeks ago, just out of curiosity. I was surprised to find that I had capsules in black, gray, navy, and cream. With lots of tops that coordinated across the capsules. It was overwhelming and confusing! So I reorganized my closet back to type of garment by color. It’s so much more useful for me to look at all my jackets, all my pants, all my knit tops, etc. , by color. Capsules are great for travel, though.
That’s a fun experiment
I absolutely agree…for travel, I try to pick one base color (black or navy or burgundy) and then wear other pieces and accessories around the base.
My biggest problem through the year at home, however, is that my color preferences change year by year. Some years are green, some burgundy, some black, some navy, some royal blue, etc., so I wind up with a jammed closet organized by color. The minute I get rid of something, I can guarantee I will want it next year. So for for both travel capsules and home wear, I need a lot of variety.
Really love your style! I feel like I’ve found a place that I can relate to! Casual, classic, stylish … exactly what I like! Thanks!
