Is a Capsule Wardrobe Right For You?

Have you ever wondered if a capsule wardrobe is right for you? In our quest to hone our signature style, some women adore the thought of a capsule wardrobe and others feel they are boring. Let’s chat about it today; plus, I’m sharing a few outfits I wore last week.

A capsule wardrobe is a curated collection of versatile, timeless pieces that can be mixed and matched to create multiple outfits. Many women find a capsule wardrobe liberating because it simplifies their lives. With fewer choices, decision fatigue is reduced, making it easier to get dressed each day. A capsule wardrobe allows you to focus on quality over quantity and curbs impulse buying. It also saves space and reduces clutter. It’s a minimalist approach that offers a sense of control over your wardrobe and avoids the endless cycle of fashion trends.

On the other hand, many women believe capsule wardrobes feel limiting, and their simplicity can stifle their creativity. The limited variety begins to feel repetitive and monotonous. Women with creative or eclectic styles also find it challenging to streamline their wardrobe without losing the uniqueness that makes their outfits feel personal and exciting. Capsule wardrobes are often focused on neutral colors and classic styles to ensure versatility, which doesn’t appeal to women who love bold patterns, bright colors, or statement pieces.

A Few Outfits I Wore Last Week

ALPINE TURTLENECK size S / ROSE GOLD BEE PIN / ROSE GOLD HOOPS / KICK CROP PANTS size 10 (other option) /
FASHION SNEAKERS (other option) / SHOULDER BAG

For a busy day racing around town…picking up mail at my PO Box, going to the grocery store, and then standing in line at the post office…I wore this sweater, which was one of my favorite purchases last year. It’s a machine-washable wool/cashmere blend that is breathable and super soft. It’s currently marked way down and comes in 4 colors. The turtleneck is quite loose, and I wanted to jazz it up a bit, so I pulled the neck off center and added a tiny Bee pin in the same rose gold as my simple hoop earrings.

I wore some taupe stretch pants (alternative) and my comfy Rag & Bone fashion sneakers (alternative). My taupe Vancouver Bag coordinated well because of its gold trim, which I love to wear as a crossbody for hands-free convenience.

BLACK TURTLENECK size MP / STRAIGHT-LEG JEANS size 29 / SIMILAR FAUX FUR VEST / SOCK BOOTIES / SILVER NECKLACE / SIMILAR BROOCH

On this day, I met a couple of pals for some business networking, then went on to Cost-co. I wore my Talbots perfect turtleneck and Pistola straight-leg jeans. I needed a but of warmth so I added my faux fur vest (similar). The vest has no closure so I belted it to keep it in place and give it some shape. I wore my comfy knit sock booties, Lagos silver necklace and added a brooch to the vest (similar).

Did belting the vest make me appear larger than I am? Probably, but I liked the look and, more importantly, the cozy feel of it belted. I believe it’s important for us to enjoy how our clothes feel, even if their appearance breaks some “rules”.

LONG SLEEVE TEE size M / CASHMERE HOODIE size S / SWEATSHIRT BLAZER size S / BOOTCUT JEANS 8P / SUEDE LOAFERS (alternative) / SIMILAR SILVER LINK NECKLACE

Friday felt chilly, so I wore layers that I could remove as the day wore on. I started with a Nic+Zoe long-sleeve tee in a soft green color, layered on my gray Quince cashmere hoodie, and then my navy Frank and Eileen sweatshirt blazer. I wore my Talbots barely boot jeans and some comfy suede loafers (similar). I’m also wearing the earrings my husband gave me for Christmas and a silver link necklace (similar) that I found at an art show last summer.

LEOPARD JACKET FROM CLOSET ARCHIVES / TURTLENECK size MP / STRAIGHT LEG CORDUROY PANTS size 29 / TROUSER BELT / SILVER BROOCH / PEARL STUDS / SIMILAR DRIVING LOAFER

I was headed out for a dressing room try-on, which always involves a lot of walking, so I wore super comfy driving loafers (similar). Brooches are back in a big way, and I find them so easy to add to any outfit. I pinned this silver brooch onto a leopard jacket I’ve had in my wardrobe for longer than I can remember. I wore it over my trusty black Talbots turtleneck and Loft charcoal straight-leg corduroy pants (marked way down). I wore my simple pearl studs because earrings can get in the way when pulling things on and off over my head. I added a simple black belt because belt loops look unfinished without one.

Now that I’ve shared a few outfits I wore last week let’s talk about how you’re building your signature style. Are you a capsule wardrobe devotee, or do you find them limiting? I use a capsule wardrobe for travel but I’m not a dedicated user of one at home. I’d love to hear your thoughts and find out which approach to dressing you prefer.

Thanks for reading and be sure to wear what makes you feel confident.

  1. Jennifer, you look so nice, simply, or you simply look so nice. Lol! Meaning, your outfits are simple, yet so attractive and not at all hard to put together with these elements.
I’ve tried to put a capsule wardrobe together a few times; mainly for vacations, and it was successful, but really, it’s too much effort for me! I always have so many clothes that I want to wear, even on vacation, so I do end up taking too much with me. Paring down is hard, and I can’t imagine doing it at home when it’s not necessary. I do admire the concept though.

  2. Enjoy following your posts. I get affirmation that I am doing some “right” things, and I also get inspired. I’m working on the monochromatic look to create the less “blocking”. I’m short 5’2″ and have short torso.
You inspire me to dress nice, even on the days I work from home.

  3. A capsule wardrobe for travelling is a must for me, but it ends there. From the age of 5, until I retired aged 55 I wore a uniform of some sort – so I am capsuled out. In summer I love my dresses and skirts in all colours and shapes. Winter is a bit more disciplined, but I spend most of the time wearing exercise gear ( which I guess is a capsule in itself lol). Keep up the good work as you feature clothes women can actually wear and look stylish

  4. My goodness – one line in your post resonated. Belt loops needing a belt even if it just a plain one. I don’t often wear a belt and often wonder why a look isn’t quite finished. Such a simple thing but I’m sure it’s going to work for me.
Love your posts, especially the ‘what I wore’ series even though I’m down here in New Zealand so in a completely different season. So much inspiration.

    1. I’m so glad it was helpful.

  5. I really enjoy your blog, your honesty, and creative stylish outfits. They always help me consider combining clothes in a different manner. The fitting room sessions are great.
I’ve happily lost a good deal of weight lately so the capsule approach has helped as I’ve invested in new clothes that fit. But I too can find it a bit constricting.
Sorry about the rude people, I don’t understand them either. I hope you can ignore as best as possible and realize there are so many of us who enjoy all of your postings.

  6. Christine Kennedy says:

I always enjoy your posts and look forward to new ideas for styling. I’m old enough now (77) to ignore trends and create my own updated style that flatters me and is comfortable. I’ve brought out my collection of silk scarves, brooches, and good jewelry for daily wear with jeans, vests, pants and sweaters. I also indulge my love of color pops with my collection of colored flats with the above and always get compliments! Please keep up your wonderful posts that inspire and entertain.

  7. I like capsule outfits with a touch of whimsy- a unique piece that can go with all of my basics.

  8. Do like all your outfits but favourite look this week for me has to be the last image with the leopard jacket. As to the subject of a capsule wardrobe; living in the climate I do, personally I find it too daunting to even consider such however since my wardrobe is curated to the extent that designs are classic in cut they can often be combined with a new trend with purpose re-tweaked. Last but not least re nasty comments; just ignore them Jennifer and don’t let ‘their insecurities’ (because that’s what they are) get to you. -Brenda-

  9. I never realized why capsule wardrobes didn’t appeal to me until you mentioned creative people find them restricting. That was an ah ha moment for me. Now I understand and don’t feel guilty about buying colorful clothes. I’m happier and more comfortable wearing red, pink and blue. I restrict wearing patterns and stay to one accent color at a time. I did, however, have a hard time understanding why not everyone owns red shoes–Now I get it!

  10. Stacy Hensle says:

Love all your looks. You always look so amazing. Thanks for sharing. 😊

  11. Loving all your outfits today. And you look great with the fur vest belted. What a novel idea. As for capsule wardrobes, I only try and use that idea when traveling and am limited as what I can pack.

  12. Thanks for the inspiration this morning! I’ve recently retired and need to go through my closets and get rid of items I will no longer need. I like the idea of a capsule wardrobe to help me select and organize the clothes I keep. I’m not creative at all, in fact I find putting together an outfit to be exhausting, so a capsule wardrobe should fit the bill.

  13. You are wearing the sweater I bought in heather grey! I loved it on you and it is so soft and warm. Our daily dog walks are my outings and I have really been glad I had it. I wear mine with my flare kicks jeans which seem heavier and warmer. I just wish they were high rise. I’m really not comfortable with mid rise anymore. I love the way you dress! I copy a lot in less expensive clothes. I play the high low game. You are my younger mentor. I’m so sorry if some people are trolls and just look for influencers to mess with. Rude is rude and at my age, unacceptable!
I switched to Viki’s closet plan when I purged about a month ago. It works for me. I wear earrings usually but it has been so cold here that I have to wear a hat a scarf and pull my hood up and earrings get caught. But I like to keep the icy wind out of my ears. It raises a mess with my hair even in my current pixie! You help to keep me more current Jennifer and I appreciate your cutting the trolls. This is our safe morning space to have fun with fashion and to have reflective discussions. Thank you.

    1. I appreciate you Sydney, thank you!

  14. For most of my life I purchased clothing because I liked the item. I took it home and looked for coordinating pieces. This worked out most of the time, although I often wish that I had a more organized way of making decisions. I find capsule wardrobes intriguing for this reason. I like the simplicity of the idea and not having to keep track of so many items.
I do think that it might work if I have fun accessories. I don’t want to be boring so would love to know more. Love seeing your outfits.

    1. You’re not alone so we will dig into it further.

  15. Beth Crawford says:

I really like capsules for travel. It helps me pack less and coordinate better.
But for my regular closet I prefer to keep my clothing grouped by type of item, then by color. It’s easier for me to get dressed if I can see all my long sleeve shirts in one place…etc…
I love your style ! I am retired and I can copy any of your outfits and be dressed appropriately for my events.
    Thank you !

  16. Janet Robinson says:

Your in store try ons are very helpful and your daily outfits are truly inspirational. Would that I could banish the cruel trolls and creeps that comment… I am sure you don’t let them get to you, but it means extra work for you to filter them out. Thank you!

    1. Unfortunately, some do get to me. I’m working on letting it go because I know it comes with the territory.

  17. Love your looks….without really thinking about it, I do have a capsule wardrobe. The brooches, are lovely, I’m going thru my jewelry, I have many from years ago, time to resurrect and wear. them. I do have a question. The Frank & Eileen sweatshirt blazer is right on my radar, but I can’t justify the price. Are there any alternatives available???? Your blogs, make may day start off on a positive note..

    1. A cotton knit blazer would give you a similar vibe.

      1. Thanks for the suggestion, I’ll check some out…I imagine Nordstrom or maybe Talbots….

  18. Thanks for showing us your daily looks,I love this!
I also like your dressing room diaries! You have inspired me so many times! I just did a purge of my closet,5 bags of mostly winter clothes,I am ashamed to say 😕 I am trying to be better about impulse buying and even sale items. A famous designer once said,to be careful or “You could develop sale brain” 🤣
I have reeled in my purchases and am still working on not buying so much. I am also arranging my closet,so my clothes are more accessible to put together an outfit. Thanks for all you do. ❤️

    1. I weeded out 6 bags this January so I totally get it!

  19. Love the brooches you are adding! I use a travel capsule for ease of packing but not in my everyday life.

  20. I LOVE the first picture, monochromatic outfit on you. Totally my vibe! I do use a capsule wardrobe, and rotate it out monthly, keeps me from getting bored!
