Lightweight Summer Sweaters for Women Who Don’t Like to Be Cold

I don’t care how high the temperature gets, I’m still the one reaching for a sweater. Summer is hot, yes. But it’s also the season of overzealous air conditioning and breezy evenings. I don’t enjoy freezing every time I step indoors. Call it preparation. Call it being a woman over 60 who’s been caught in one too many meat-locker restaurants. Either way, I’ve learned a thing or two about which summer sweaters are actually worth owning.

What Makes a Sweater Summer-Approved

Not all summer sweaters are created equal. Some will leave you sticky and annoyed before you’ve even made it to the car. Been there, worn them. The good ones? They breathe, they drape, and they feel like you’re wearing almost nothing.

What to Look for in a Summer Sweater

  • Cotton – Always a safe bet. Soft, breathable, and generally low-maintenance.
  • Linen – Light, breezy, and slightly wrinkled at all times. Just embrace it.
  • Modal or bamboo blends – For when you want something that feels like pajamas but looks presentable.
  • Loose or open knits – If you can see a bit of skin through the weave, chances are it won’t suffocate you.

Sweaters to Wear this Summer

I’m not interested in high-maintenance pieces or anything that requires complicated layering strategies. These are the types of sweaters that make it into my regular rotation.

Pullover Polo Sweater

SLIM WHITE JEANS/ POLO SWEATER / STRAW BAG / SNEAKERS (BUDGET OPTION)

If you like your sweaters to feel light but still look finished, this Polo Sweater checks both boxes. The pointelle stitching adds just enough texture to feel special, and the polo collar keeps it from looking too casual. The cotton blend is breathable, and the fit is relaxed without being sloppy. It comes in 6 colors to fit any color palette.

4-Way Cardigan

NIC+ZOE 4-WAY CARDIGAN

This 4-way cardigan from Nic+Zoe has been in my rotation for many years, and for good reason. It’s light, easy to layer, and surprisingly versatile. You can wear it open, tied, wrapped, or crossed over, depending on what works with your outfit. The fabric drapes beautifully without adding bulk, and it folds up small enough to slip into a tote. I love it for simple arm coverage, and it’s just enough when you encounter a heavily air-conditioned building. I have it in several colors, which they update each season.

Open Stitch Cardigan

This Open Stitch Polo Cardigan is one of those sweaters that looks like summer and feels like nothing at all. This cardigan is perfect for the in-between temperatures. I’ve spotted a lot of these open knits this summer in both pullovers and cardigans. If black isn’t your thing in the summer, it also comes in white.

Organic Linen Cardigan

The linen cotton blend cardigan is light and breathable, so it works well for warm weather, but it still offers enough coverage to take the chill off. The cropped shape makes it ideal over dresses or anything with a defined waist, and the fit is relaxed without looking oversized. It’s simple, practical, and goes with just about everything. EF makes this every season in lots of colors.

Cotton V-Neck Sweater

There’s nothing complicated about this V-Neck Cotton Sweater, which is exactly why it works. It’s made from breathable cotton with a relaxed shape that doesn’t cling or add bulk. The V-neck is flattering without dipping too low, and the weight is just right. Plus, it comes in multiple colors, like light green and bright pink.

Pebble Dream Supersoft Sweater

I don’t own this one, but the pattern caught my eye. The diagonal dot print gives it a bit of movement without being loud, and the blue and white keeps it feeling crisp and summery. It’s a good option if your closet leans neutral but you still like the idea of a little visual interest.

Stripe Open Stitch Sweater

If you’re more of a classic and neutrals person, this summer sweater under $100 is for you. The open stitch makes it breathable, and the stripes add just enough structure to keep it from feeling too sweet.

More Summer Sweaters for Ladies

If you’re in the market for a lightweight sweater, I’ve linked a few good options below.

How I Wear Sweaters in Summer Without Overheating

  • With white jeans and sandals – Classic, simple, and doesn’t require much thought.
  • Over a cotton or linen dress – Especially useful when I’m trying to avoid freezing at dinner or hiding my upper arms without committing to a blazer.
  • With shorts or lightweight pants and a roomy tote – For coffee runs, casual errands, or pretending I’m just effortlessly pulled together.
  • For travel – Always. I don’t care if it’s 90 degrees at departure and 95 at arrival. Planes are cold and I like being prepared.

How I Take Care of Them

I baby my summer knits. Delicate cycle or hand wash. Never the dryer, unless I want them to shrink to doll size. I suggest laying them flat to dry and then folding them, rather than hanging them, so they don’t develop weird shoulder bumps or stretch into something unrecognizable.

If you have a summer sweater you swear by, I’d love to hear about it. And while we’re talking about useful layers, you might want to take a look at my post on how to wear a jean jacket, it’s one I reach for often.

Thanks for reading, and be sure to wear what makes you feel confident.

  1. I can vouch for the four-way sweater. I have a similar one in white that I wear with tank tops. It’s lightweight and adds a bit of polish. I never go sleeveless.

  2. I’ve been wearing an EF cotton utility shirt in the color reed. It goes with everything and is perfect to throw in the car. It’s a little heavier than a sweater but great on a cool windy NW coast day when I’m looking for something other than a Jean jacket. It’s currently on sale too! I also love the cotton cargo pants in reed when I want something other than jeans. Also on sale!
I bought the Talbots open weave polo sweater in white and black. Wore the white today with a graphic tee. Loved it!

    1. That sound like great options!

  3. Hi Jennifer.
I purchased the Nic & Zoe sweater last year on your recommendation and love it. I also have the Eileen Fisher in black. It’s so versatile. Great investment.

    Thanks for all your suggestions!

  4. I have a couple of EF linen sweaters. I wear them in the winter as layering pieces. They work so well for that because can peel one off if I get too warm in an overheated restaurant or car.

  5. The Nic & Zoe and the EF look to be light enough the put in my bag. I would only need for ac. They are both out of my budget however. I will keep my eyes open for lightly used.

  6. I just wanted to tell you how much I appreciate your blog and the effort that goes into it. Having photos of you wearing the outfits is a game-changer. It gives is a real idea of how clothes fit and flatter. I really thank you for your time and commitment. all of us over 55!
    Thank you so much.-cheers!

    1. I will try to share more images of me in the clothes!

  7. I have a white ‘jean jacket’-style eyelet jacket that elevates a casual look without being too heavy. I also have a very inexpensive white cotton cardigan with an open weave design that I keep by my purse and grab anytime I head out in the summer. I, too, hate to be cold in restaurants, movies, grocery stores, and even the Senior Center, where I play bridge!

  8. I have a white linen sweater similar to the Nic and Zoe 4 way from Chico’s and I have been wearing it on repeat this summer. A few of the boutiques in my area(Healdsburg,CA) have beautiful cashmere ponchos that can be worn several ways and have been perfect for cooler nights here. They come in beautiful colors. I have a denim blue and lilac one. I get compliments every time I wear them.

  9. I have a Madewell cotton v-neck pullover I love. In fact I am wearing it right now because mornings are quite chilly. The 4-way sweater is also so useful for summer. Love the all black outfit you are wearing.

  10. I’m with you on summer air conditioning. I always take something to cover my arms just in case. Thank you for the selections. The short sleeve Talbots caught my eye.

  11. Living in the NW a sweater is always required. I’m always on the lookout for a simple lightweight cardigan but they aren’t always easy to find. This season I just seen to be reaching for one of my lightweight golf jackets. I really like the Nic+Zoe one you showed here. Looks perfect.

    1. It really is. I bought my first Nic+Zoe cardi over 12 years ago and now have three colors. I wore my white one yesterday.

  12. I bought two of the open stitch polo cardigans this summer and I love them! I don’t like to be cold and they’re perfect when it’s warm outside and freezing indoors. Plus they can be that third layer that really takes pants and a tank top up a notch with causing me to overheat. Great post!

  13. Good morning Jennifer. I am wondering how to view the comments. I used to see them at the end of the blog but for some time now, they aren’t here.
I find them useful, encouraging, informative and miss them. Am not a tech person and don’t know how to access them. Thank you.

    1. If you scroll to the bottom past the subscribe box, you should see them.

  14. Thank you! I just bought the Eileen fisher sweater in branch, a brown I’ve been searching for! And it’s on sale!

I have three of the Nik+Zoe convertible cardigans since you first posted about them a few years back. They are my favorite at home and for travel – so featherweight.

J Jill often has lightweight linen sweaters too.

Great post, a top layer is hard to find in the summer!

    1. I was eyeing that Branch shade. Is it warm or cool based?

      1. AI (if you can trust it) says branch is a warm toned neutral so I’m hoping that’s correct since I look better in warm colors.

      2. Thanks Jan. I’m going to try to get into the store and look for myself.

I have been realizing I’d like a bracelet sleeve length navy cardigan to put over all of the navy patterned sleeveless dresses I own. Talbots has recently featured only has full-length sleeve cardigans, although, in response to a comment they said wait a while, as if they’ll be featuring bracelet-length cardigans soon, but it hasn’t happened yet. You show a lot of options for picky me.

    1. I’ll roll my sleeves if necessary and in fact, I find it adds so sass to a plain sleeve.

  16. Great article on summer sweaters. I run cold, so I am always chilled when inside, or outside if below 75. Also my husband is not a fan of the look of jean jackets layered over dresses, so sweaters it is. Thanks for the options. Have a blessed week!

    1. Sweaters are a softer, more refined option to the denim jacket. Maybe that’s why he prefers it?

  17. I have also had my Nic + Zoe white sweater for a few years. Couldn’t live without it in the summer chill of freezing restaurants!

    1. They’re brilliant, I agree

  18. Absolutely carry a sweater (blazer or Jean Jacket) with me every day. Houston is 90-105+ outside and 20 below in the grocery store or restaurant! I have a white cotton knit (kinda like a heavy T-shirt material) button down sweater (with pockets!), I think it is older model Talbots. It is my most common “go to”. It was perfect in NOLA in June. I forgot to take a sweater to San Diego Memorial Day weekend and I about froze to death! I was miserable. That won’t happen again. Talbots often carries a pullover cotton hoodie. I have a few; they are a good casual vibe for summer – they do mess up my hair a bit but that is fixable! I also think it looks elegant to drape my summer sweater over my arm as I walk in to a restaurant or in to meet the service manager at the car dealership etc.

  19. Hi Jennifer,
I really enjoy starting my day reading your blog. Have you done a post about affordable, yet stylish jewelry that lasts for more than a few months? I used to wear Brighton jewelry, but lately it seems dated. There are so many other options. I need advice! Thanks for your help.

    1. I haven’t but I love the idea of that. Costume jewelry does change vibe and I agree some tend to look dated yet totally classic pieces can look old fashioned. I’ll work on some ideas. Thanks for the suggestion.

  20. Lately I’m finding the AC blast more than just uncomfortable; it’s almost painful. I love the little EF cardigan, especially with dresses! I got a cute crochet cardigan at H and M in an updated, shorter cut. I find the cuts and colors of the Talbots stuff to not be my style. While not a sweater, I want to mention the Tommy Bahama Two Palms linen jacket. It’s a very lightweight jean jacket style and so comfy. I prefer something I can take on / off vs committing to a full on sweater.

    1. I agree that TB linen jacket is wonderful. I lost mine in a move so I need to think about replacing it.

    2. I love the TB linen jackets too, I have three!
