Neutrals and I Need Your Help

Today I have an outfit that I love, plus I’d love to get your answers to a few questions. As much as I enjoy wearing color, neutrals have my heart. They’re timeless and easy to coordinate plus they’re less memorable than brighter colors which make them more versatile.

This faux suede moto jacket has been a best seller on AWSL for many months, with good reason. It comes in several flattering neutrals, it’s incredibly luxe and soft, and the price is amazing.

This fawn color coordinates with so many other colors. It feels as versatile as black…but a lot more flattering for many of us. It comes in sizes 00-18, I’m wearing a 6-8. Leather and faux moto jackets have a hard look to them, which I avoid, but this super soft, ultra-suede dials back the edginess because it lacks shine.

WEARING –  FAUX SUEDE MOTO JACKET  –  NECKLACE –  CROSS FRONT BLOUSE IN LAYERED RIBBONS PRINT  –  HIGH-RISE STRAIGHT CORDS  –  SIMILAR BOOTIES

These are super-soft cords from Banana Republic which have a straight leg and high rise. I like the way the fuller leg helps add balance to my shape. I’m sure skinny pants will be back before we know it, but I’m not anxious to wear them anytime soon. How about you?

The surplice-wrap blouse has a shirt tail back you can wear out, or tuck in. It has a lightly draped front with a snap at the V which keeps it from gaping open, always a plus for me. The front is the perfect length to wear over your waistband which shows some waist definition but conceals your tummy. It comes in several patterns, regular and petite, sizes XXS-XXL. I am wearing a regular in small. The subtle lug sole combat style booties are from last year, similar here, and here, and here.

Now, here’s where I need your help-

Several of you have mentioned that you’ve given up reading other blogs, but continue to read mine. Why? I am honored, but I have never asked why and I would love to know.

  1. Your blog is a comfortable place to visit and glean ideas and I like your style. It’s age appropriate and up to date at the same time. Although my budget is very limited I glean ideas as to what to look for when I shop and how to make it look better on my “Nana’s figure”. I’m in Arizona.

  2. I agree with everyone’s coments. Being 73, I have made the transition to my natural hair color and get lots of positive comments. I would like advice on clothing colors and makeup. What are good guidelines? Beige neutrals, cream and gold or yellow can really be bad! Help!

  3. I read only your blog, Jennifer. Several reasons:
    – topics cover a wide range of topics.
    – Your clothing selections and outfits are tasteful and not humdrum
    – You show us lots of options for dressing
    – You provide fashion insight and education
    – Your selections are from stores I shop in
    – You dress in outfits from all price ranges. So many bloggers work with only the high end brands.
    – The items are ususally current and available.

  4. I agree with the others who stated that you are very relatable. We are in the same age range. We have the same hair issues and even use the same rollers. I have learned so much from your tutorials and refer to them often. Even though I am taller, your dressing room dairies have steered me in the right direction many times. I truly appreciate all of the knowledge you share and all of the hard work required to continually publish an interesting, informative, enjoyable blog.

    I live in the US.

I live in western Kentucky on the Ohio river. We are within 3 hours driving time of 5 major cities, St. Louis, Indy, Louisville, cincy, and Nashville. Makes for lovely 3 day weekend trips. I retired 5 years ago, been working since I was 14. I love love clothes, always have. Made nearly all my clothes in high school. My wedding dress was my senior project (made an A)……. At 5’ I could make a shift dress out of 1 yard of material, those were the days.
I’m very weirdly put together, short, broad shouldered, long waisted with very short arms and legs. Petite clothes don’t always fit correctly, usually to short waisted but still 4” too long. Don’t know what I would do without Pearl my 94 year old alteration lady.
Love your dressing room diary’s for fit advice and different styling options. I’ve learned to shop my closet and can pull together a similar version of most anything shown. I’m a cool winter in coloring, the brighter the better. When I get “cleaned up” for the day I always included jewelry, no sense in it laying in the cabinet. Someone is always asking me what are you so dressed up for…. I’m really not, but it makes me happy.
I have jabbered enough about me. Keep up the good work, I can’t wait each morning to see what you are up too. Thanks for letting us share your life.

  6. I like your style and the colors you use. Our body types are similar enough that I can sometimes purchase things you showcase (I bought a Banana Republic dress you tried on last summer that I would never even have considered based on the webpage) because it’s so very hard to find clothes that fit well when you’re not a pear shape, isn’t it?

You’re like a cool older sister that I can learn from. <3

  7. I appreciate the time and effort you take to keep us informed of the latest fashion. I really appreciate the wide range of prices you model, from high end to Walmart. My coloring is different but I often find the style you’re showing in a different color. And though I’m older by a few years I find you very relatable.

  8. Jennifer, I continue to read your blog because you are petite and so am I. You have given me great ideas . I’m also in my 70’s and don’t want to look like an old lady, I want to be relevant but not wearing clothes too young for me. I find that you also give samples of moderately priced clothes or clothes I can find that are moderately priced and similar to what you post. I love your dressing room diaries! Thank you for all you do.

  9. I enjoy reading your blog because I love your fashion sense. Your style of dressing appeals to me and I often get styling ideas that I can use . I love neutrals too and love seeing how you inject a pop of color with your accessories and your makeup. I live on Vancouver Island and also enjoy your posts where you visit us on the Island.

  10. Hi Jennifer, I am from Canada, and have followed your blog for a couple of years now. You are relatable, warm and funny. Your style is very close to mine, or at least what I aim for. I too have very fine thinning hair, though curly, and appreciate your advice, on hair care. Reading through the other posts, I have to say I agree with many, you are down to earth, the clothes you style are usually at a reasonable price point, and I love that you show different ways to style an outfit. I follow a few other blogs, but most I have dropped as they are not relatable to me. Thank you, I enjoy reading your blog each morning.

  11. Jennifer, I subscribe to four other fashion bloggers over 50. I don’t always agree with their choice of clothing or their taste level. In contrast, your outfits are thoughtfully chosen and attractive. I enjoy your dressing room diaries and ideas on how to improve an outfit. Please continue your excellent posts.

  12. I have subscribed to many blogs over the last few years, but I have to say that yours is the only one I look forward to every day. You are a real woman, you say what you think, and believe in what you say! you have inspired me to try new things, clothing, hair products, etc. and I will continue to follow you for great advice , suggestions and an all around happy blog. Thanks ever so much Jennifer. Proud to say I am from the great USA 🇺🇸

  13. Happy to share! I like your style because you are not “over the top” glamour, which is not realistic, but always so well put together. You’re down to earth, but aspirational. It helps that you have my hair – thin, straight, baby fine – so I’m always interested in how you style it. And we have figure similarities, too. Like you, I have no hips, more of a straight up and down figure. Unfortunately my size 6 figure sports a tummy bulge, so there’s no front tuck for me. It just emphasizes that tummy in the worst way. And I like that you include lower cost alternatives like Target.

  14. I’m from San Diego, I’m 78 (in your Faster Way cohort with Karen), and I read your blog because I like you! 😉 You generally focus on fashion from the same stores which I shop and your fashion comments generally jive with mine. Your recent little mini videos have been helpful and entertaining, too.

  15. I really relate to your style and Love looking at all the outfits you try on. Also enjoy the would you wear it post. You talk about your life and struggles which I think is very brave. That has to make you feel vulnerable but you do it with grace and we all appreciate it.

  16. Your blog is one of the few that feels like I’m talking with a friend. You don’t have buy-this lists, you are down-to-earth, you ask our opinion on things, you admit that things might not be your style, you explore things that are not 100% your style, you ask how to make a trend or “outlier” work with our own style. Some blogs make me feel like I’m using clothes to fit in or create a higher level status. Your photographs are in natural environments, not like a magazine shoot. I don’t need to see your outfit from 7 different angles, like others. In your dressing room diaries you’re not afraid to wear something that doesn’t fit 100% and discuss why and how you’d adapt. Your blog is not packed with handouts. You’re just real!

  17. I love your blog because we have a similar body shape! It can be challenging to dress a 5’3’’ body! Usually too tall in the torso for petite and too short in the leg for misses! Add in age, cool coloring, and conservative tastes and we’re a match! Thanks for the great ideas!

  18. I think the 6 comments before mine have said it all. I also follow you because my style is similar to yours, you are open about health and beauty issues in your life, and have a warm and friendly personality that makes it feel like we are friends and neighbors. AND, your dressing room diaries and other special features of your posts are incredibly helpful. Thank you for all those things!

  19. I enjoy your blog because you are very relatable and have given me lots of styling ideas that I would never have thought of on my own. We also have the same coloring and thin, straight, thinning hair, so when things look good on you, I know they’re likely to work for me, too. I also like that you showcase clothes and accessories in a variety of price points.

I would be interested in reading a future blog post about what fabrics are best for the environment, as I’m trying to wear more earth-friendly fabrics and fewer microfibers like polyester, nylon and acrylic, but am confused as to whether rayon, bamboo and cotton are better for our planet.

Thank you for all the hard work you put into this blog!

    I live in Connecticut, USA.

  20. I stumbled over your blog while googling style tips for petites. I’m so glad I found it! I read it every morning. Your style is similar to mine and I like the way you style your outfits. I enjoy your tips about skincare and the recent gift ideas. I enjoy the WYWI and the mannequin posts. I like that your links are to stores I shop and are reasonably priced. I too have an adult daughter and I think we would be friends if you lived next door. I’m in my fifties and I did not want to throw in the towel and give up with dressing stylishly. Originally from the UK but live in USA now.
