The Best Color Shoes To Wear With Navy Pants (Especially After 50)
If you’ve been reaching for navy more often lately, you’re in good company. These days, when something comes in black or navy, I’m more likely to choose the navy. Not because I’ve sworn off black, but because navy just feels a bit softer and more flattering against my aging complexion. Of course, once navy shows up more in your wardrobe, the next question usually follows: what color shoes do you wear with navy pants?
It’s a fair question because navy can be notoriously tricky. There are warm navies, cool navies, and nearly-black navies, and they rarely match each other. But here’s the thing…most blacks don’t match either, and we still wear them together without a second thought. The same can be true for navy, once you let go of perfection.
Let’s walk through what shoe color goes best with navy pants, especially for women who want getting dressed to feel effortless, not confusing.

Nude, Beige, and White Shoes: Light Neutrals That Go With Everything
Nude shoes (in a tone close to your skin) are the most foolproof option. They visually extend the leg line, which is especially helpful with cropped pants, skirts, or dresses. Whether it’s a nude loafer, flat, or sandal, this color quietly pulls an outfit together without demanding attention.

Beige adds a bit more warmth and visibility but still reads as neutral. White shoes, on the other hand, feel crisp, fresh, and modern—especially with navy. They’re a great choice for spring and summer outfits that need lightness.

Can You Wear Black Shoes With Navy Pants?
Absolutely. And chances are, you already do. That old rule about never mixing navy and black is outdated. When done intentionally, the two look polished and modern, especially with structured trousers or tailored navy pieces.

The key is to repeat the black somewhere else in your outfit: a belt, bag, buttons, or even your eyewear. That small bit of repetition helps the look feel cohesive instead of clashing.
Silver, Pewter, and Cool Metallics: Polished Without Trying Too Hard
If your coloring leans cool, or you’ve embraced your gray hair (as I have), silver or pewter shoes might feel surprisingly right with navy.

These metallics work as elegant neutrals. They add a bit of light reflection and polish without being flashy. A pewter sandal or silver flat adds interest to an otherwise simple outfit—and they’re shockingly versatile with other colors too.
Navy Shoes With Navy Pants: Can It Be Done?
Yes…but it’s not about a perfect match. Finding the exact same navy shade is nearly impossible. Instead, focus on mixing textures. A navy suede loafer with a navy cotton pant, or a leather sandal with a linen trouser, creates a subtle contrast that reads as intentional.

Red, Green, and Yellow Shoes: A Pop of Color That Still Feels Sophisticated
If you’re in the mood to add some personality, color can absolutely work with navy.
~Yellow or mustard adds brightness and cheer, especially with navy in spring or early fall.
~Red feels classic and energetic. A cherry red ballet flat or sandal gives navy trousers a bit of spark without feeling over the top.
~Green—especially olive or emerald—adds an earthy, grounded contrast to navy that feels modern and rich.
Animal Print: A Quiet Neutral with Personality
Animal prints are like salt in a good recipe—just the right amount brings everything to life.

A leopard flat, snakeskin mule, or zebra sandal adds a bit of edge to an otherwise classic outfit. When the rest of your look is solid or neutral, animal print shoes bring personality without looking loud or trendy.
Best Shoe Colors to Wear With Navy Pants For Women Over 50
At this stage, I’m far less interested in chasing the “perfect match” and much more focused on what feels easy and pulled together. Navy can be a little tricky, especially when you’re trying to coordinate shades, but it doesn’t have to be. Whether you’re reaching for nude sandals, silver flats, classic black loafers, or something with a little animal print, the best shoe color is the one that supports your personal style and simplifies your life, because our style should evolve with us, not become more complicated. Getting dressed shouldn’t feel like a puzzle, and at this age, confidence and ease are far more valuable than a textbook match. The goal is to feel quietly confident and like the best version of yourself.
What’s your favorite shoe to wear with navy pants? Have you found a combo that always works for you?

I absolutely cannot wear this seasons favorite color – butter yellow. But I am lucky to have a several years old pair of yellow sandals and a butter yellow crossbody bag someone gifted me. I now wear those with a navy ensemble which makes it look current without putting yellow anywhere near my face
Navy looks fabulous paired with yellow
I’ve always struggled with this so thanks for the suggestions. Do you have any recommendations for nude shoes, both closed toes and sandals?
I will be doing a round up of my favorites soon!
I like color so I like something unexpected with navy. I like statement shoes. I would never do white or beige because that is not me.
I used to have ox blood penny loafers that went well with navy pants. About 20 years ago I realized my husband wears black dress shoes with navy suits and it looks classic. So I started with black loafers and never looked back. I have a navy (cocktail) dress that I have worn to more weddings than I’ll admit to and pair it with pewter. And casual navy capris are sometimes worn with my navy Keen sandals. Right now we’re driving home from a long weekend up north in Michigan and I’m wearing navy shorts with light grey “tennis shoes “ Guess I’m all over the map!
I have something of a small collection of flats in red, navy, mustard and green that I choose from, depending on what’s speaking to me that day. 😉
I like a rich camel brown with brown leather accessories.
Me too!
You always share such good info
Thank you
I tend toward my Apropos Sport Skimmer in Navy Lux, an easy, secure, good looking – and washable! – ballet flat in navy & black weave. The blend works well with shades of navy and softens black.
I’ve had three pairs of Apropos shoes for more than two years, and they still look brand new.

Thank you, Susan. This brand is new to me and it checks a lot of boxes for comfort, travel, and washable too!
I love how animal print shoes can work like a neutral but add so much to an outfit.
It’s funny that we think we can’t wear black shoes with navy pants but we wear black with jeans all the time. It seems I’m always in search of baby and red shoes. They can be hard to find. I found some navy slip on Sketchers that I wear often.
Saddle/tan
Racing green
Cognac/burgundy
The nice thing about these colors is that they work with almost everything. Great for travel.
I love what you said about animal print and salt ! So true ! I also like a caramel brown shoe. Have a lovely day Jennifer.
Caramel is such a yummy color with many things
I love cognac with Navy.
Yes, me too!
I like purple with navy. Also like burgundy navy.
What a timely issue! Two days ago, I wore navy pants with a navy jacket and got out in the sun and realize that the jacket went to the green and the pants went to the purple. I was very disturbed. My husband said I was the only person who would notice and it looked fine. Maybe time to give up looking for the perfect match. I have a pair of navy Sketchers Go Walk shoes that I always wear with navy pants. They are eternally comfortable and I guess they look OK!
The undertones can be tricky, so I try not to obsess over them too.
I was worried when link wasn’t working, but HAPPY to see you successfully fixed. I am always in a quandary about navy. Thanks for your options!
Navy has quickly become a favortie, so I know I can’t be alone wondering about which shoes look best.
My favorite is burgundy or any dark red with navy
Love it!
I am an ardent lover of navy. Always have been. I’m sure years ago I broke the “navy” rule. But, oh well. I wear a lot of browns and tans with my navy and never feel self conscious. I won’t wear black with navy, it feels wrong to me. Just sayin’…
Here’s to breaking the rules!
Especially in cooler weather, I like to wear wine or burgundy shoes with navy. They provide a bit of contrast without pulling all of the focus to the shoes.
I agree!
I like cognac with navy! It adds a richness to it.
Agreed!
I wear all of the colors you mention, but silver is my favorite. Runner ups are taupe, white or a pop of color (red, fuschia, green) and of course, navy. I don’t care for black shoes with navy. If I were warm toned I would totally embrace leopard!
