The Best Color Shoes To Wear With Navy Pants (Especially After 50)

If you’ve been reaching for navy more often lately, you’re in good company. These days, when something comes in black or navy, I’m more likely to choose the navy. Not because I’ve sworn off black, but because navy just feels a bit softer and more flattering against my aging complexion. Of course, once navy shows up more in your wardrobe, the next question usually follows: what color shoes do you wear with navy pants?

It’s a fair question because navy can be notoriously tricky. There are warm navies, cool navies, and nearly-black navies, and they rarely match each other. But here’s the thing…most blacks don’t match either, and we still wear them together without a second thought. The same can be true for navy, once you let go of perfection.

Let’s walk through what shoe color goes best with navy pants, especially for women who want getting dressed to feel effortless, not confusing.

Nude, Beige, and White Shoes: Light Neutrals That Go With Everything

Nude shoes (in a tone close to your skin) are the most foolproof option. They visually extend the leg line, which is especially helpful with cropped pants, skirts, or dresses. Whether it’s a nude loafer, flat, or sandal, this color quietly pulls an outfit together without demanding attention.

NAOT SANDALS / NAVY PANTS / STRIPED TEE / WHITE JACKET / SIMILAR NECKLACE / TOTE BAG

Beige adds a bit more warmth and visibility but still reads as neutral. White shoes, on the other hand, feel crisp, fresh, and modern—especially with navy. They’re a great choice for spring and summer outfits that need lightness.

Can You Wear Black Shoes With Navy Pants?

Absolutely. And chances are, you already do. That old rule about never mixing navy and black is outdated. When done intentionally, the two look polished and modern, especially with structured trousers or tailored navy pieces.

The key is to repeat the black somewhere else in your outfit: a belt, bag, buttons, or even your eyewear. That small bit of repetition helps the look feel cohesive instead of clashing.

Silver, Pewter, and Cool Metallics: Polished Without Trying Too Hard

If your coloring leans cool, or you’ve embraced your gray hair (as I have), silver or pewter shoes might feel surprisingly right with navy.

These metallics work as elegant neutrals. They add a bit of light reflection and polish without being flashy. A pewter sandal or silver flat adds interest to an otherwise simple outfit—and they’re shockingly versatile with other colors too.

Navy Shoes With Navy Pants: Can It Be Done?

Yes…but it’s not about a perfect match. Finding the exact same navy shade is nearly impossible. Instead, focus on mixing textures. A navy suede loafer with a navy cotton pant, or a leather sandal with a linen trouser, creates a subtle contrast that reads as intentional.

Red, Green, and Yellow Shoes: A Pop of Color That Still Feels Sophisticated

If you’re in the mood to add some personality, color can absolutely work with navy.

~Yellow or mustard adds brightness and cheer, especially with navy in spring or early fall.

~Red feels classic and energetic. A cherry red ballet flat or sandal gives navy trousers a bit of spark without feeling over the top.

~Green—especially olive or emerald—adds an earthy, grounded contrast to navy that feels modern and rich.

Animal Print: A Quiet Neutral with Personality

Animal prints are like salt in a good recipe—just the right amount brings everything to life.

A leopard flat, snakeskin mule, or zebra sandal adds a bit of edge to an otherwise classic outfit. When the rest of your look is solid or neutral, animal print shoes bring personality without looking loud or trendy.

Best Shoe Colors to Wear With Navy Pants For Women Over 50

At this stage, I’m far less interested in chasing the “perfect match” and much more focused on what feels easy and pulled together. Navy can be a little tricky, especially when you’re trying to coordinate shades, but it doesn’t have to be. Whether you’re reaching for nude sandals, silver flats, classic black loafers, or something with a little animal print, the best shoe color is the one that supports your personal style and simplifies your life, because our style should evolve with us, not become more complicated. Getting dressed shouldn’t feel like a puzzle, and at this age, confidence and ease are far more valuable than a textbook match. The goal is to feel quietly confident and like the best version of yourself.

  1. I’m so glad you covered this subject. I searched for navy shoes to match my navy pants a couple of months ago. Returned several pairs of shoes that did not work — the color was off. I kept one pair and now I know why they work: they have a woven texture that disguises the slight color difference! Thank you for the insight.

  2. The fashion police used to say that your shoes had to be darker than your pants, but that’s gone out the window thankfully! I own many pairs of gold shoes, both dressy and casual, because I think they go with everything. I like my gold shoes with navy.

    1. Metallics are fabulous with navy

  3. Agree about shoe colour being tricky. In summer, I wear silver (Rollies) or other type of metallic e..g pewter. I am usually wearing a dress or skirt When I wear my patent yellow Tod loafers, I get heaps of positive comments. Sometimes, I throw on my Rollies which are a kaleidoscope of soft colours. In winter, I find a soft grey works.

  4. That first picture where you are wearing Black driving moccasins, I would have likely wore either Navy or a taupe type colour that matched the scarf you have on. I agree with other commentors that brown and navy go really well together.
I do have a question about pairing various tops with Navy. I wear just about any colour with a navy top except a black and maybe not an orange, but one colour I love with navy is pink. What colour tops do you pair with Navy pants?

    1. I pair all colors with navy pants! It’s the perfect neutral

  5. I have almost completely switched from black to navy pants–only wear black when required, like when I’m in a concert. So I have been exploring this issue for a while now.
Merinos makes a fabulous navy wool lace up that you can get with a navy sole (also comes with a white sole but I prefer the navy). I wore these to death last winter. Simple and comfortable.
I also like white sneakers with navy capris for a casual look.
Sandals–I have nude, yellow, and magenta. All great with navy.

    1. Navy soles sound fabulous…googling now!

  6. Super tips Jennifer but in all honestly the closest I’ve come to navy bottoms is a dark washed blue jean that I often pair in early Spring or Fall (to mid) with a navy loafer (and no socks). In other words for me in garments, its never been a color I’ve gravitated to so currently just have a few pieces with it. i.e.: A structured NB blazer in a pique fabric (textured blend of cotton and polyester) that is accented with white ‘n Navy Blue two-toned buttons. Do admit it is somewhat old but being a classic cut, pair it with plain ‘white’ cotton blend pants (just above the ankle in length), ‘white’ footwear (style depending upon environment) and a white ‘n NB striped T-Shirt that IMO now gives it a casual current but polished appeal rather than for office wear which it was originally purchased for. -Brenda-

  7. This has been very helpful! I have gold sandals I plan to try with my navy pants.

  8. The pics of you wearing navy are so classy. Love that look, especially the navy pants and top with the seafoam green duster. I wear navy a lot and never tire of it with creams and whites.

    1. I love to look classy so thank you, Gail

  9. Lots of good pointers here. Especially like the idea of using textured navy shoes. I own every color of pants imaginable with the exception of navy! I’ve been studying blogs and I like the idea of “bookends” or, repeating the color of the top on my feet.

  10. I wear a medium golden brown, or a dark taupe with navy pants. Still more of a black slacks gal, especially traveling…but coming around to navy. Seems like there are more shades of navy than there are black.

    1. It seems that way but the undertones of black really differ a lot

I was taught as a carrot 🥕 body type to wear lighter shoes to bring the eye down from my bust and shoulders so I usually try that. But sometimes it feels a bit to much contrast. Skin coloured shoes always a good choice. Like your options! Thanks

  12. I wear navy pants often, even in the summer, and I have experimented with various colored shoes. So far my favorite combinations are navy with my mustard yellow Fly London wedge sandals (expensive but comfortable!) and a LifeStride coral sandal that was surprisingly inexpensive. I wear various striped or solid tops or jackets to coordinate with the shoes. Lots of fun!

  13. White sneakers if a lot of walking is involved and navy sandals if hanging at home. Do like brown leather with navy but don’t have any right now.

  14. Peggy West says:

Very helpful post. I love a dark navy. It’s the catholic school girl uniform in me popping out.

    1. Lol, old habits really stick with us

  15. Judy Billingsley says:

Thank you for this timely post. I have been struggling with this. I have been wearing nude or red this summer which has worked for me because I couldn’t find the true navy sandals. It is like you gave me permission to go with what has worked!
