Weekend Reading 06.07.25

Happy weekend, ladies. The weather is mild and sunny, and I’m enjoying it vicariously through the blinds. I’m an introvert and can happily stay inside for days at a time with no problem, but tell me I have to stay inside… and I go stir-crazy.

OUTFIT DETAILS

This is what I wore to bring our sailboat back from the boatyard the day before my photodynamic treatment this week. I’ve decided this raffia bucket hat will be my official boat hat this summer because it gives me great sun protection and has a chin strap that I can snug up to keep it from blowing off. It also has UPF 50+, plus it’s really cute. I had several women tell me how great this hat is, so you will be seeing me wearing it a lot this summer.

Crossed my radar

I was thrilled to start wearing the above cotton gauze shirt again. (mine was from Eileen Fisher last year, and I have coordinating pants). When the weather really warms up, cotton gauze is one of the easiest fabrics to wear. It breathes, keeps you cool, and unlike linen, never requires ironing. You can pay a lot or a little for cotton gauze, and it all looks similar.

This utility jacket looks like a great piece for the summer in white or navy.

This cotton gauze short-sleeve shirt will likely find its way to my wardrobe to wear over this sleeveless cotton gauze dress…in vintage cream or ocean blue. I wish this skirt came in other colors because I don’t need another black one.

I love, love, love these wide-leg gauze pants, and I would wear them with a more fitted tee like this. While scouring the sale section, I found this striped gauze dress that just screams relaxed to me. I picture it worn with unique raffia earrings, classic Jack Rogers sandals, and a great summery bag.

Eyelet is certainly having a moment this summer, and there are fabulous options everywhere. I prefer it in deeper colors this season, like this navy skirt or this navy eyelet bomber worn with crisp white or chambray.

Jennifer, glad to offer some suggestions for you! You always give us some very good ones!! I really enjoyed the series, Zero Day, & my husband was addicted to it also when he watched it while I was traveling. It keeps you on the edge of your seat. The Beauty Queen of Jerusalem was another good series & I liked the Diplomat as well. For movies with strong women in them, I liked SelfMade & Operation Mincemeat. All on Netflix.

    1. Thank you Lisa. These sound good

  2. Hi Jennifer,
I love the idea of the gauze shirt over the gauze maxi! They are in my Quince cart, but I’ll wait a day or two to make sure I’m not being impulsive.

Thanks so much for sharing your health/beauty journey with us – I find all of it helpful! Especially lately I’ve appreciated the eyebrows, posture, & things I’m doing for my health postings. We have some health issues in common, so the blogs are meaningful. And like you, I often wear petites & am a “summer” – so your fashion ideas are most useful.

    1. Ah! We have much in common.

  3. Oh! I miss knitting so much! But really arthritic hands ended that a few years ago. The only streaming service we have is Prime. Lately I’ve just watched the news and a couple of HGTV shows I like then turn it off and listen to my latest book, Hidden Nature by Nora Roberts on Audible. Then I sit and color in my adult coloring books like Johanna Basfords Secret Garden with Prismacolor pencils. The dining room table is a mess with all of my stuff! I’m wearing a gauze shirt and pull on pants from Old Navy that looks like your shirt. Heal soon.

    1. I’ve seen those adult coloring book. They look fun.

    Hi!

Tonight is the George Clooney Broadway show, broadcast live on CNN-7pm eastern time.

  5. Don’t know if this would be ok after your procedure but…..after laser, ipl, freezing spots or “electrocuting” them, my Derm gives me neova recovery lotion or cream to use. It really makes a difference, keeping my skin moisturized and speeding healing. I order directly from neova. Also, When my skin is really dry and/or chapped,I’m use the lotion at night. Next day my skin is much better. I have mega sensitive skin with rosacea redness and my skin does great with this….no reactions, no breakouts, etc.

And Netflix….second Emily in Paris. Also, gilded age on hbo/max…great period piece.

    Speedy recovery!

    1. I will check it out. Googling right now. Thanks for the tip.

  6. I too am only enjoying our mild weather through the window as I am having severe back pain. I understand when you say you don’t like having limitations put on you. Buy your Quince dress! I purchased the Navy and love it! My J Crew linen skirt and vest arrived but are still in the package as I have trouble dressing. That hat is very cute and so important to have a strap. As far as Netflix, I watched Sirens and enjoyed it. I usually take the lazy way and watch shows in the top ten.

    1. I’m so sorry to hear about your back pain. That is the worse! I hope it eases up soon Sylvia. Take care

  7. Hi Jennifer,
I enjoyed your column this morning featuring gauze cotton clothing options as well as photos of you wearing your new completely adorable hat. I bought several gauze cotton button-down shirts from J Crew several years ago based on your recommendation and have really enjoyed wearing them. Anyway, I am wondering if you might be able to recommend several stylish hats options with SPF protection but not at that price point. Due to very active life style, I am reluctant to commit to buying/wearing any hat at that price point. Thanks very much!

    1. J Crew makes some wonderful hats as does Hat Attack. I also like Columbia hats which have UPF 50+

  8. We loved Slow Horses, I read the book too. Both very good.

  9. Hi Jennifer! I just finished watching Dept. Q on Netflix and really enjoyed it. Highly recommend.

      1. I was about to recommend the same! We’ve only watched the first episode so far, but the scenes of Edinburgh alone are worth your time! Also, Netflix has The Thursday Murder Club coming in August – that will be great I’m sure, have just finished reading the book.

    1. That was a great series!

  10. My recent Netflix views: Sirens (5 pt series); Hitchcock (as in Alfred) – great cast: Anthony Hopkins, Helen Mirren, Tony Colette, Scarlet Johanssen – about the filming of Psycho. Watching Hitchcock led me to: “The Man Who Knew Too Much”, Rear Window (my favorite), Vertigo, and I found one I’d never heard of but stopped soon after the start: “Family Plot”. I’m on the hunt for “Dial M for Murder” and “The Birds” is always a good one. North of North (6 pt? series) very cute. I’m looking at the above and it occurred to me that you might think I watch TV all day!!! I watch Netflix when I needlepoint which on some days can be for a couple of hours and an hour or so before turning in! I hope you enjoy some of these.

    1. Thanks Leslie. They sound great. I like to watch tv when I knit so I understand completely 🤣

  11. Kathy Brandhuber says:

As to what to watch. Grace and Frankie on Netflix is absolutely wonderful. It has Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin in the title roles on aging gracefully and not so gracefully. There are several seasons. A bit raunchy in places but overall hysterical.

  12. The best movie I have watched on Netflix recently is Nona’s about a restaurant still around in Staten Island, NY. The Italian grandmothers are wonderful.

I did get the Ecco bunion friendly sandals and they are great. Thank you.

    1. Yay!! I just bought a second pair in the exact same color I already own because I wear them ALL the time.

  13. Have you watched Nonna’s on Netflix. You will love it!

    1. I haven’t thanks!

  14. On Netflix I have been watching Sweet Magnolias, also Emily in Paris is fun and something different is One Good Deed. I am very interested in your procedure as I have been treated for the precancerous spots by having them frozen .

    1. If I didn’t scar from the freezing I’d probably just have done that because it’s so easy. What I’m liking about this is that it’s all at once, and treats hidden ones that have not even come to the surface.

  15. Hi Jennifer,
Love your posts. If you are looking for something to watch on Netflix, try The Four Seasons. Funny and touching.

Also Marc Anthony Grow Long anti-Frizz Shield ultimate blowout. Thank you for your daily emails. I enjoy them all and I appreciate all the information
and being part of your community.

  17. Would like to see some straw tote bag used for a purse not the Hugh beach bags ones.
    Thanks

“Dept Q” on Netflix sucked us in and we semi binge watched over 3 nights. It’s dark and violent, but the storyline is intriguing. And it’s worth signing up for Apple TV+ to see the 4 seasons of “Slow Horses”, starring Gary Oldham. Absolutely the BEST show…..think it won multiple BAFTAs.

    1. I love Gary! He’s a fabulous actor. I may need to try Apple TV

  19. I loved The residence on Netflix! Great writing and very funny even though it is a murder mystery. Acting is excellent and very quirky characters. I highly recommend it. The other show I enjoyed was The Two Popes. Again, excellent acting and I found it very interesting.

    1. Wonderful thank you!

  20. Clarkson’s Farm is one of the best things I have been watching for the past four years, however it is on Amazon Prime, not Netflix. Mobland, a British series is great, with a rather sinister Helen Mirren and Pierce Brosnan.

    1. It sounds really good! I love her and he’s not hard to look at! Thanks Susan
