Monday Musings Down Memory Lane

This past weekend was crazy busy and my daughter found a condo! We’d looked at so many that were rough around the edges, so when she saw this one…she just knew. We’re super excited for her. I still remember moving into our first home and the fun we had making it our own.

**Frank & Eileen had a very rare sale over the weekend. I’m not sure if it’s still going on, but if it is, you can save 15% off your entire order with the code LOVE.

Here I am, right after we moved into our first home in 1978. My hair looks red, but that’s just the old photo. This was back in the days when I sewed all my clothes. The dress is soft yellow cotton and was likely from a Butterick pattern. I can still remember how excited we were to get our own little place. A month later, we had friends come over, and we painted the outside of the house bright pink! The neighbors must have thought we were nutty.

Pop Of Color

Last week, we chatted about easy ways to add color to your wardrobe. The week before, we chatted about how to wear pastels without looking outdated. One of the tips in both of those posts was to add a small pop of color.

DETAILS OF OUTFITS

Soft yellow is very popular this spring, so I thought it would be fun to show 4 ways to style the same yellow handbag. After all, when we invest in a handbag, we want it to be versatile enough to style with many things in our wardrobe.

The soft yellow is a nice touch with blue, green, white, and neutrals. Gold touches in the earrings and footwear coordinate nicely with the gold trim on the bag.

Save or Splurge

I’m a huge fan of stripes, and when I spotted these black and white cardigan sweaters, I thought they would be perfect for our save or splurge feature.

DETAILS

We went for light wash jeans, open weave flats, gold jewelry, and a fun pop of red in the crescent-shaped bag and lipstick. Can you tell the save from the splurge? The prices difference is significant for the same look.

Thanks for reading, and be sure to wear what makes you feel confident.

  1. I can usually tell which is the splurge and which is the save by the details such as, stitching, scale of print, cut of the pants and tops, details on shoes & bags and sometimes by looking closely at the jewelry. But this time it was tough! I picked the one on the left as the splurge because of the thiner stripes on the sweater and less fullness in the pant leg. They just seemed a little more subtle.

  2. Oh I forgot to say I liked the low choice better on the right in the picture!

  3. I’m with Shari! I have a navy LL Bean tote with my first name in white on it from many years ago. Jennifer you did a good job with your sewing back in the day! I did too. I even had a pale yellow dress in high school which I’m sure made me look jaundiced. It isn’t my color at all. You look good in such a wide range of colors, what is your color palette, spring?

    1. I’m a true summer in the Sci-art method. It’s brighter and less muted than soft summer and cooler than light summer.

  4. I’m interested in how readers spot the splurge over the save. What are your methods?

  5. Mary Lou Holt says:

I bought lab grown diamond earrings last year at JC Penney sale for Mother’s Day (around $600 for 1 ct. total wt.) and they are really gorgeous! The sparkle is amazing!

    1. Amazing! Thanks for letting me know. I’ve been reading that the diamonds have much more brilliance than the white sapphires.

    2. I cannot tell the difference today. I prefer the sweater on the right, but the narrower denim on the left. They are a great look that I would define wear.

  6. I really like the outfits with the striped jackets and red handbag. I actually like the save version better.

  7. Wow that is a heck of a difference! And I actually prefer the bold strip of the Maje jacket. Thanks for the spend or splurge, now I shall have to go look for a yellow handbag for spring too, one that is not too spend-y!
    Have a good day.

    1. There are lots of options out there

  8. Prefer the proportions of the save outfit! So I have that FE Rory dress in the color shown (it’s a dark enough blue for me.). I don’t care for yellow. I have accessorized with sliver, but thinking of other options for this year. Red seems too Americana. Navy and white are good but obvious. I have some fuchsia Birks I’m going to try. I also have a good ol green and white LL Bean tote.

    1. Green would be fabulous but I love the fuchsia idea though.
