9 Winter Hand Creams for Aging Skin
This time of year can be tough on our hands. Between the cold air outside and the dry heat indoors, I find my hands feeling drier than ever as the season wears on. Combine that with aging skin, and you have a recipe for rough, chapped hands that need some serious TLC. I’ve tested out my fair share of hand creams over the years, so today, I’m sharing nine best-selling ones that really stand out. These picks cover everything—from rich hydration to anti-aging ingredients—and they’ll make all the difference in helping your hands feel soft, smooth, and ready to take on winter.

I’m currently carrying this teeny Aveda Hand Relief, which has the calming shampure scent. I picked it up at my last haircut. I love the scent so much I’m going to get a full-sized tube.

9 of The Best Winter Hand Creams for Aging Skin

Let’s be honest…our hands often reveal our age more than anything else. The skin on mine is looking more papery than ever these days. Despite years of applying sunscreen and keeping them moisturized, I’ve still noticed my hands have a crepey texture and that telltale loss of volume. After having such great results with Nécessaire’s Body Retinol (which I talked about in this post), I decided to try their Hand Duo. The set includes both a hand cream and a hand retinol. After a few months of use, I’ve seen a real improvement in the look and feel of my hands.

I know not all of my readers like fragrance, so skip this one if that applies to you. LOLLIA’s beautiful packaging always catches my eye in gift shops, boutiques, and even at Anthropologie. These creams have a light, luxurious scent that feels special without being overwhelming, and a thin, easily blendable formula.

L’OCCITANE is a classic for a reason. It’s thick and rich with shea butter, so it’s great for really dry hands. A little bit goes a long way, and a tube of this lasts forever! Before I decided to opt for cruelty-free options, this was my hand ream of choice for years.

The reviews on this cream speak for themselves: it’s a true lifesaver for dry, cracked hands. This would make a thoughtful stocking stuffer for nurses or anyone in a job where constant hand-washing is a must.

This Clarins cream is great because it hydrates both your hands, nails, and cuticles in one go. It goes on light, soaks in fast, and leaves your skin feeling soft, not sticky—perfect for daily use.

Sometimes, you don’t realize you need a good hand cream until it’s too late, and you’re stuck dealing with painful, irritated hands. That’s when this La Roche-Posay cream is a lifesaver. It has ingredients like niacinamide that help calm down redness fast and bring back the moisture your skin desperately needs.

This one from eos is a steal at under $5 and is made to last through hand washing, so you’re not constantly reapplying. It’s perfect to toss in your bag and use anytime your hands need a quick boost of moisture.

These mini tubes from Caudalie are perfect for on-the-go. They’re made with grape seed oil and shea butter to keep hands feeling soft and smooth without a heavy or sticky feel. This little set would make a great addition to a holiday gift basket!

This Beekman 1802 Pure Goat Milk Hand Cream is a wonderful option. It’s super moisturizing, and it comes in lots of fragrance options, including fragrance-free! Goat milk is rich in lactic acid, which is a natural exfoliant and helps prevent visible signs of irritation, sensitivity, and premature aging.
What’s your favorite hand cream? Let me know in the comments.

My husband and I both use the LaRoche Posay Lipikar lotion or balm. It was recommended by our dermatologist who uses it too.
A tip from dermatologist – pump or squeeze out the pea-size amount of retinol/retinoid serum or cream for your face. Use the tiny amount leftover or that’s still on your fingers to the backs of your hands, then slather on moisturizer. Result is smoother hands, fewer dark spots. Use retinol/retinoid sparingly on hands, that skin is sensitive!
Great idea! I’ve going to try it.
I love the L’OCCITANE Shea Butter Hand Cream, have it in my car, bedside. I also love the Retinol handcream by Robanda..it also has SPF 15 which helps. andmakes my hands smooth and soft. I never wash dishes without gloves, I even keep a set at a friends house and my sons..great article, our hands do reflect our age, and they are so worth taking care of…paraffin therapy is wonderful..thanks to Mary J for recommending the Bath & Body works hand cream with paraffin….
L’occitane Immortelle hand cream is perfect for overnight use. I had started to get darkening around the knuckles and it has completely eliminated that. I would use it all day long, but save for before bed as its a little pricey. Great product!
Wow, that’s good to know! Thanks for leting us know
At almost 80, my hands are showing that paper thin look. I also use the Manuka Honey but have started using my husband’s favorite Alba original unscented for extra moisturizer and at night this is perfect for me. We get it at Natural Grocers but City Market also has these products. It is a Krogers grocery store. I put it on every time I wash my hands, just Avery small amount and it is helping. Our furnace is on at night and the ac kicks on in the afternoon. Ready for real fall weather and sweaters.
Hands down – Cetaphil. (No pun intended!) Costco carries it in bulk and has the best price around. It will last you months and months. Cream lasts all day, even after washing dishes.
Good choices! My biggest challenge is my dry, tearing cuticules! I wash my hands alot and reapply lotion but it is not enough. I also can’t have hands too greasy working at the computer all day or driving. I’m now covering my hands with heavy duty cream and gloves at night but I have to be consistentent to make a difference.
L’Occitane cream for hands with 25
percent shea is pure luxury . I don’t know why that extra 5 percent makes such a huge difference, but it is worth the results.
I do love shea butter everything. It’s so rich and moisturizing.
Can’t say I have a favorite hand cream, but as for keeping away sun spots off of hands, I keep sun block 50SPF In my car and apply it to hands all year round (except when it’s cold enough to wear gloves)!
This past summer I tried a Coppertone solid stick…shape of a deodorant stick… and it was very easy and convenient, just a bit shiny looking.
I love stick sunscreen and keep one in my car too.
Shikai Borage Therapy Advanced Formula — when I use this, my skin always feels taken care of, with a moisture that lasts. It claims to be fragrance-free but has a slight scent that does not linger. This stuff really works!
This is a timely post for me today. I just had a few pre cancer spots removed on my hands. My dermatologist said it’s mostly from driving and riding in the car. I’m definitely going to check out your recommendations.
Hi Jennifer,
Thank you for the many hand cream recommendations. I’d like to share a tip with your readers that had not occurred to me until my body rebelled this summer. I just turned 70 this month and am working on overcoming a lifelong bad habit of not drinking enough water. By early summer I was waking up in the middle of the night feeling like I had “cotton” mouth. We’re talking totally dry, no saliva at all. I was also starting to feel thirsty frequently during the day. At those times I would get a drink, but it was obviously not enough. I was concerned enough about the situation that I had my doctor run my first ever A1C test. I worried that perhaps I had developed diabetes. Thankfully, I had not. I decided the problem was simple. I just don’t drink enough! I bought a 60 ounce water jug that I fill each morning and keep on the kitchen table. I pour 8 ounces of water at a time and drink it throughout the day.
Here’s one of my discoveries after doing this for several weeks: The skin on my hands looks 15 years younger!! Before my thirst issue developed I would sometimes pinch the skin on the back of my hand to see how fast or slow it would spring back. That’s a simple dehydration test. Even when I passed the test, the skin on my hands looked old, old, old. Now that I am hydrating (and spending a lot of time in the bathroom, ha, ha) my hands look so much better! I am bad about using hand cream and need to make using one consistently my next self-improvement project. Ladies, make sure you are getting enough water :).
Thank you so much for sharing this Kathy. I know I don’t drink enough water either, as hard as I try. I’m trying to pay much more attention but a bottle like yours would be very helpful.
New hand creams to try! I carry a mini size of Goop spf hand cream in my purse (even in winter), I keep hand cream year round on my nightstand (vary the brands) & hand cream in my kitchen. I apply after Ambi every PM for dark spots.
I am the same with rubber gloves-not always diligent with use!
Yes there are loads of hand creams out there , good old fashion virgin olive oil is another tried and tested one and some women put it on as a body moisturiser and I knew of a lady who used it as face moisturiser, she had great skin ! Don’t know if I would go that far but why not , no additives .
Le Occitane has fabulous fragrance, gosh so many hand creams .
I sometimes give as Christmas presents or stocking fillers a nice pair of winter gloves and a quality hand cream and it’s always appreciated.
Love some of the hand creams your readers mention too , but like you what are Korean gloves ?
Pamela U.K
I googled the Korean rubber gloves and apparently they are superior!
The best I’ve found is Gold Bond Hand Cream for Eczema Relief 3 oz., Skin Protectant Cream With 2% Colloidal Oatmeal. It was recommended by Dr. Dray on YT and it definitely works well on my hands.
It sounds great!
l’occitane shea butter for day and aveeno hand cream at night (as it has no scent)
The Caudalie Hand & Nail is a favorite of mine except in the coldest part of winter. I also use Kiehl’s Ultimate Strength Hand Salve at night if my hands get too dry in winter. Very soothing.
I do admit to being a faithful rubber glove user, and Santa put some Korean gloves in my stock g a few years back. They are seriously the best ever and very rarely need replacing. I find rubber gloves keep my weak, brittle nails much stronger when combined with co sister hand cream use.
I love the salve idea! What’s unique about the Korean rubber gloves?
They have long pleated cuffs that keep water out. And for some reason they are really, really durable. https://amzn.to/48oWA1H
Thanks, they look really great! I’ll try some.
I switch around with hand creams… using one with manuka honey at bedtime right now. Wearing gloves for dishwashing is essential for my hands and especially nails. I love the Casabella brand as they are long-lasting.
I know they would help a lot! That’s why I keep buying them…now if I could just use them!
Great picks here! I love Trader Joe’s version of the Occitane shea hand cream. It’s in a similar blue and silver tube and makes a great gift/stocking stuffer for around &6.
Great to know!!
I like the hand creams from Bath and Body Works, both scented and unscented. There is one with paraffin which is especially good for nails and cuticles. They have a very good rewards program with daily specials.
The paraffin is an interesting idea. I remember how very soft my hands felt after the physical therapist dipped my hands in the warm wax.
